Summary: This study proposes a new wavelet sparsity enhancement methodology for artifact-free extraction of bearing transient vibration signatures. The wavelet sparsity is enhanced through wavelet basis design and wavelet coefficient processing. An adaptive undecimated fractional spline wavelet transform is introduced to address the shift-invariant problem and customize an optimal wavelet basis adaptively. A two-step wavelet processing method is also presented to remove low-frequency noise. The validity of the methodology is verified with analysis results of vibration signals measured from fault-injection experiment and industrial wind turbine transmission system. The methodology shows advantages in suppressing artifacts and extracting sparse transient vibration signatures of bearing structural damages.

Summary: Cerebral Angiography analysis is crucial for assessing the future of stroke patients who underwent thrombolysis, with the parenchymogram containing valuable information on reperfusion quality. The proposed methods for extracting the parenchymogram from raw angiographies rely on basis pursuit and overcomplete wavelet transform for image representation, showing essential information for comparing blood flow before and after thrombolysis in clinical data.

Summary: The tribological behavior of cutting is crucial in determining the production cycle, cost, and quality of parts. Minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) based on environmentally friendly biolubricants can modify the contact conditions in cutting zones, but it cannot meet the requirements for machining difficult-to-machine materials. This study comprehensively analyzed the lubrication mechanism and technical performance of enhanced MQL in turning, and conducted a comparative assessment of cutting force, cutting temperature, tool wear, and surface quality under enhanced environmentally friendly lubrication turning. The study provides insights into the mechanism, tribological behavior, and development trend of lubrication in relation to continuous cutting.

Summary: Texture descriptors are widely used in medical image analysis, especially in histopathologic images (HIs), due to the variability of texture and tissue appearance caused by staining irregularities. However, extracting texture features in a discriminant way is challenging because of the non-deterministic complex system formed by the intrinsic properties of such images. This paper proposes a novel method that quantifies these properties using ecological diversity measures and discrete wavelet transform, which outperforms state-of-the-art shallow and deep methods according to experimental results on two HI datasets.

Summary: Social isolation negatively affects seniors and a significant portion of the general population, leading to vulnerability, isolation, and depression. It increases the risk of cardiovascular problems, which can be identified through electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. This study proposes a method using a variable auto encoder-based optimization algorithm to detect loneliness from ECG signals, achieving improved accuracy and performance.

Summary: In this paper, a novel method for 2D pattern recognition is proposed, which utilizes the log-polar transform, dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DTCWT), and 2D fast Fourier transform (FFT2) to extract features. The new method achieves translation, rotation, and scaling invariance for input 2D pattern images in a multiresolution manner, which is crucial for invariant pattern recognition. Experimental results on a printed Chinese character dataset and a 2D aircraft dataset demonstrate that the new method outperforms two existing methods in most testing cases involving rotations, scaling, and various noise levels in the input pattern images.
