Use of water sources by buffy-headed marmosets (Callithrix flaviceps) at two sites in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest

Many primates are able to satisfy most of their water requirements from the liquid content of their food, but almost all need to visit external water sources during critical periods. The present study analyses the use of water sources in two free-ranging groups of buffy-headed marmosets (Caratinga and RBAR groups) over an annual cycle. At both sites, a large proportion of the days had no visits, and the visitation rate fell by approximately half in the wet season. Differences between sites appear to reflect both contrasts in habitat structure and the composition of the diet. Despite inhabiting a more humid environment, for example, the RBAR group visited water sources on a significantly larger proportion of days than the Caratinga group. While 94.2% of the records for the RBAR group involved bromeliads, this type of source was not recorded at Caratinga, where terrestrial sources were used relatively frequently. Seasonal variation indicates that arboreal sources are preferred over terrestrial ones at both sites, and that rivers are used as a last resort, when other sources are scarce. The use of terrestrial sources involves cautious and coordinated group behaviour, which presumably reflects the perceived predation risk. Overall, the relatively frequent use of watering sites in the RBAR group might be related to its highly fungivorous diet, in comparison with the more typical gummivorous diet of the Caratinga group, although the exact implications of this difference are not clear from the available data.

Summary: The study found that the alpha-diversity of bats in the continuous forest in the Amazon is higher compared to other habitat types, with more unique species present. Bat community assemblages in less complex habitats are subsets of those found in the continuous forest. Summary: The Amazon forest is home to the highest biodiversity on Earth. However, information on the diversity of vertebrates in the Amazonian region is still lacking. In this study, camera traps were used to collect data on mammals, birds, and reptiles in different regions of the Amazon. The resulting dataset is the most comprehensive inventory of species ever compiled for the area, providing opportunities for ecological studies and evaluation of environmental impacts.

Summary: This study investigated the geographic patterns and ecological correlates of the most common tree dispersal modes in Amazonia, including endozoochory, synzoochory, anemochory, and hydrochory. The results showed that anemochory was positively associated with mean annual wind speed, while hydrochory was higher in flooded forests. The availability of resources for constructing zoochorous fruits did not explain the distribution of dispersal modes. Further research is needed to understand the association between frugivores and the proportional abundance of zoochory.

Summary: Among mammals, the order Primates stands out for its high taxonomic richness and the diversity of arboreal, semiterrestrial, or terrestrial taxa. The transition from arboreality to terrestriality in primates is influenced by ecological factors and species-specific traits. As humans modify habitats and climate change occurs, species inhabiting hot, sparsely canopied environments and with more generalized diets are more likely to shift towards increased ground use.

Phorophyte size and soil profiles differentially correlate with community structure among hemiepiphytes and nomadic vines

Summary: Tropical non-self-supporting plants, such as hemiepiphytes and nomadic vines, were studied to understand the factors influencing their occupancy patterns. The results showed that larger trees (>=30 cm DBH) supported more species for both types of plants. Additionally, soil factors played a stronger role in the distribution of nomadic vines on smaller trees, while no significant differences were found among functional groups for larger trees. These findings emphasize the importance of demographic-based studies to understand the complex plant-plant interactions.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between bat diversity and environmental conditions in a terra firme forest in the northeastern Brazilian Amazon. The results show that bat richness increases with the distance to the nearest watercourse and that more diverse taxonomic and functional groups are found in areas further from the watercourse. Additionally, elevation and basal area of the forest positively influence bat diversity.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between the diet and behavior of Callicebus coimbrai monkeys in northeastern Brazil and fruit availability indexes. The study finds that the monkeys do not adopt a time-minimizing strategy, but compensate for lower fruit availability by increasing the search for alternative food sources.
