Summary: The study aimed to assess the rate of unplanned hospital visits among patients undergoing ambulatory surgery. The results showed that the risk-adjusted 30-day rate of unplanned hospital visits after same-day surgery was 4.8%, with emergency department visits at 3.1% and hospital admissions at 1.7%. Factors such as age, sex, number of comorbidities, and type of procedure were associated with increased risk of unplanned hospital visits.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between anaesthetic factors and discharge time in ambulatory cholecystectomy. The results showed that the dose-weight of ketamine and sufentanil, as well as the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, were associated with prolonged discharge time.

Summary: The intraoperative use of dexmedetomidine in ambulatory surgery is associated with prolonged PACU length of stay, which is dose-dependent and influenced by surgical duration, type of anesthesia, and timing of administration. Clinicians should carefully titrate dexmedetomidine, especially for monitored anesthesia care during shorter procedures.

Summary: This study examines the association between a claims-based frailty index and time at home in Medicare beneficiaries. The findings suggest a positive correlation between frailty and short time at home, indicating the need for additional resources and interventions to prevent health decline and poor quality of life.

Summary: The evidence suggests that home-based end-of-life care programs can increase the likelihood of patients dying at home. However, the impact of home-based end-of-life care on patient outcomes, symptom control, caregiver satisfaction, and healthcare costs remains uncertain.

Summary: This study found that patients who were familiar with telemedicine services before a disaster had lower rates of emergency and hospital utilization for certain ambulatory care sensitive conditions in the year following the disaster. Familiarity with telemedicine may help reduce the use of emergency and hospital services following disasters.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the frequency, reasons, and factors influencing postoperative hospitalizations, clinic visits, and emergency department (ED) encounters within 24 hours of ambulatory surgeries. Data from a university sports medicine ambulatory surgery center during its first 2 years of operation showed that only 0.75% of patients sought additional care within 24 hours, mostly due to medical complications or postoperative pain. Patients who sought care tended to be older, with more medical comorbidities, and had undergone upper extremity procedures more frequently.

Summary: This is a study comparing different management strategies for mild acute pancreatitis (MAP). It is a randomised, controlled, three-arm multicentre trial. The study aims to determine whether outpatient or home care is similar to hospital admission in terms of treatment failure rate for patients with MAP. Secondary endpoints include pain relapse, diet intolerance, hospital readmission, hospital length of stay, need for intensive care unit admission, organ failure, complications, costs and patient satisfaction. The study will provide evidence for the effectiveness of outpatient/home care management for MAP.
