Spatial sampling designs used to characterize the spatial variability of soil attributes are crucial for science studies. Sample planning for the interpolation of a regionalized variable may use several criteria, which could be best selected from an estimated semivariogram from a previously established grid. The objective of this study was to optimize the procedure for scaled semivariogram use to plan soil sampling in sugarcane fields in the Alfisol and Oxisol regions of Jaboticabal Town in So Paulo State, Brazil. A scaled semivariogram for several soil chemical attributes was estimated from the data obtained from two grids positioned on a sugarcane field area, sampled at a depth of 0.0-0.5 m. The research showed that regular grids with uniform intervals did not express the real spatial variability of the soil attributes of Oxisols and Alfisols in the study area. The calculated final sampling density based on the scaled parameters of the semivariogram was one sample for each 2 ha in Area 1 (convex landscape) and one sample for each 1 ha in Area 2 (linear landscape), as indicated by SANOS 0.1 software. The combined use of the simulation programs and scaled semivariograms can be used to define sampling points. These results may help in soil fertility mapping and thereby improve nutrient management in sugarcane crops.

Edaphic fauna and physico-chemical attributes of soil in different phytophysionomies of Cerrado1

Raimunda A. Silva, Glecio M. Siqueira

Summary: This study evaluated the composition of soil fauna and the physical and chemical attributes of soil in different physiognomies of Cerrado in the Mirador State Park. The results showed that the Typical Cerrado had higher taxonomic richness and Shannon diversity compared to the Sparse Cerrado, possibly due to more favorable soil conditions in the Typical Cerrado.

Summary: This study evaluated the degree of multifractality in the spatial distribution of altitude, organic carbon concentration, and invertebrate fauna diversity, and analyzed the joint multifractal association among these variables. The results showed that these variables exhibited multifractal behavior with varying levels of heterogeneity at different scales.

Relationship scales of soil arthropods and vegetation structure of Cerrado phytophysiognomies

Glecio M. Siqueira, Raimunda A. Silva

Summary: The objective of this study was to assess the scale relationships between soil arthropods and vegetation structure in the Cerrado region. It was found that the soil fauna was influenced by the composition of the plant strata, and plots with dense Cerrado and sparse Cerrado showed the greatest spatial dependence between samples. The use of geostatistical and multifractal analysis tools enabled the characterization of scale relationships between variables.

Summary: The Uberaba River Environmental Protection Area in Brazil is a water conservation unit that has experienced erosion, eutrophication, and changes in water quality and quantity. This study used the Universal Soil Loss Equation, Geographic Information System, and remote sensing products to evaluate soil losses and identify areas of erosion risk.

Summary: This study evaluated the spatial variability of soybean yield and soil chemical properties in an Oxisol using geostatistical and multivariate analyses. The results showed that soil chemical properties varied more at deeper soil depths, and the PCA analysis helped group these variables more evenly. Spatialization using PCA allowed for the definition of management zones for different soil depths, improving soybean yield.

Summary: The study evaluated the spatial variability of weeds in a no-till area using multifractal analysis. Results showed different levels of multifractality among weed species, indicating varying dispersion and colonization processes. Raphanus raphanistrum and Commelina ssp. exhibited low measurement values, while other weeds were the most heterogeneous.

Summary: This study analyzed the multifractality of the penetration resistance of soil vertical profiles from different slope forms, finding that convex pedoforms exhibited greater homogeneity and uniformity compared to concave pedoforms. Monitoring the minimum PR values was deemed more relevant for soil management, with fractal analysis showing potential for use in precision agriculture and specific management zone delineation.

Summary: The study investigated the spatial behaviour of soil nutrients through single multifractal spectra and joint multifractal analysis, revealing different associations between Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn concentrations obtained by Mehlich-3 and DTPA methods. Results showed that joint multifractal analysis could improve the calibration of soil micronutrient testing, highlighting the complexity of spatial distributions of available Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn across scales.
