Summary: The study found differences in demographics, risk factors, and clinical outcomes between PE and DVT alone. Management of anticoagulation duration differs between the two manifestations of VTE in routine clinical practice, contrary to recommendations in the current consensus guidelines.

Summary: Patients with Crohn's disease have an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), which is associated with higher in-hospital case-fatality rate. Older age, obesity, colon involvement, cancer, surgery, thrombophilia, and heart failure are strong risk factors for VTE in Crohn's disease patients.

Summary: GARFIELD-VTE is an observational study that aims to collect clinical data of patients with deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism worldwide. The study found that the highest accumulation of events occurred within the first 12 months after diagnosis, which may help identify treatment gaps and improve patient outcomes.

Summary: The comparison of clinical effectiveness and safety of different nonvitamin K antagonist direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in Asian patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) is unclear. Real-world practice in Asian patients showed that the type of DOAC did not affect the risk of recurrent VTE or major bleeding within 12 months of treatment initiation.

Summary: This study found that venous thromboembolism patients with concomitant anemia had a higher risk of all-cause mortality and major bleeding over a 24-month follow-up compared to those without anemia.

Summary: GPVI is a receptor expressed on megakaryocytes and platelets that plays a role in both arterial and venous thrombus formation, as well as in the formation of platelet-leukocyte complexes. It is emerging as a potential therapeutic target for venous thrombosis, pulmonary thromboembolism, and cancer metastasis due to its involvement in venous thrombus formation and thromboinflammation. Circulating soluble GPVI is also being explored as a biomarker for thrombosis-related complications.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence of upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT) in patients with moderate to severe COVID-19 infection and found that patients requiring helmet continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) ventilation were at higher risk of developing UEDVT, which was associated with increased mortality.

Summary: Patients with spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) have a higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), which is independently associated with poor outcomes during hospitalization. Prophylaxis and treatment of VTE are crucial for these patients, involving mechanical prophylaxis, chemoprophylaxis, anticoagulation, and other strategies. The use of anticoagulants in this patient population remains a topic of debate due to concerns about recurrent ICH and hematoma expansion.

Summary: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common and costly health problem worldwide. Current anticoagulant treatments have limitations in terms of bleeding risks and prevention of post-thrombotic syndrome or chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. Inhibition of selectins, a family of glycoproteins that modulate thrombosis, has shown promise as a potential therapy for VTE, with the ability to decrease thrombosis and vein wall fibrosis without increasing bleeding risks.

Summary: Treatment of venous thromboembolism in solid organ transplant recipients is associated with an increased risk of bleeding compared to non-recipients, mainly influenced by liver transplant recipients. In non-liver solid organ transplant recipients, the risk of bleeding is similar to that in non-recipients.

Summary: This study aims to identify IBD patients at increased VTE risk on hospital discharge and to develop a risk scoring system to recognize them. Factors associated with VTE included: female sex, increasing age, increasing length of hospital stay, more than two hospital admissions in previous 3 months, ulcerative colitis, and emergency admission including or not including surgery. A VTE risk scoring system with a score >12 had a 1% positive predictive value for VTE.

Summary: The study found that there is a significantly higher risk of VTE in the first 30 days after diagnosis for patients with AF, especially in women. The risk decreases with the introduction of oral anticoagulation therapy, but remains slightly elevated in women even after 9 months.
