Currently, food allergy is considered to be one of the diseases of civilization, which occurs as a result of the changing conditions of life and environmental changes (e.g. increased popularity of cesarean delivery, excessive hygienic regime during the neonatal-infantile period). Based on medical statistics, it can be concluded that this problem will be intensified. Consumption of food is one of the main activities in human life. What and how one eats affects our health. Meals eaten regularly provide the components necessary for the energy metabolism. Multicultural society, travel, and new trends affect the diversity of food consumed. The mechanism of food allergy reaction covers all 4 types of the immune response of the classical division of Gell and Coombs. The percentage of the immune response was assessed by Chandra as follows: type I - 48%, type II - 6%, type III - 10%, and type IV - 18%. The article presents the risk factors for food allergy, most common symptoms, preventive measures and characteristics of food products that are potential allergens.

Synergy, Additivity, and Antagonism between Cisplatin and Selected Coumarins in Human Melanoma Cells

Paula Wroblewska-Luczka, Aneta Grabarska, Magdalena Florek-Luszczki, Zbigniew Plewa, Jarogniew J. Luszczki

Summary: The study found that osthole and xanthotoxol have the strongest anticancer properties, reducing the median inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of melanoma cells. Compared to osthole, the combination of CDDP and xanthotoxol showed additive effects on melanoma cells. Isobolographic analysis allows for the selection of potential candidates for cancer drugs among natural substances.

Anticonvulsant Effectiveness and Neurotoxicity Profile of 4-butyl-5-[(4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)methyl]-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thione (TPL-16) in Mice

Magdalena Drabik, Mariusz Gluszak, Paula Wroblewska-Luczka, Zbigniew Plewa, Marek Jankiewicz, Justyna Kozinska, Magdalena Florek-Luszczki, Tomasz Plech, Jarogniew J. Luszczki

Summary: The novel antiepileptic drug TPL-16 showed protective effects in mice models and synergistic interaction with valproate, making it a promising candidate for further experimental and clinical testing. The combination of TPL-16 with carbamazepine, phenobarbital and phenytoin produced additive interaction in protecting mice from tonic-clonic seizures. There were no significant changes in total brain concentrations of classic AEDs after TPL-16 administration in mice.

Isoquinoline Alkaloids from Coptis chinensis Franch: Focus on Coptisine as a Potential Therapeutic Candidate against Gastric Cancer Cells

Sylwia Nakonieczna, Aneta Grabarska, Kinga Gawel, Paula Wroblewska-Luczka, Arkadiusz Czerwonka, Andrzej Stepulak, Wirginia Kukula-Koch

Summary: This study investigated the anti-cancer effects of compounds from Coptis chinensis on gastric cancer cells and found that coptisine showed the highest efficacy. The combination of coptisine with cisplatin exhibited synergistic and additive interactions in vitro, and coptisine was safe for developing zebrafish in vivo. Further studies are warranted to explore the detailed mechanisms of these bioactive compounds in inhibiting gastric cancer cell survival.

The Impact of Biochar Used in Repairs to Historical Buildings on Public Health

Daniel Tokarski, Irena Ickiewicz, Wioletta Zukiewicz-Sobczak, Pawel Wolinski

Summary: This manuscript explores the analysis and identification of microorganisms, specifically mold fungi, that can be a threat to human health in historical buildings. The study investigates the use of biochar as a supplementary layer in building partitions to reduce the contamination and development of harmful mold fungi. The research shows that the addition of biochar significantly inhibits the presence and growth of mold fungi, improving indoor air quality and protecting the health of both professionals and visitors in historical buildings.

Comparison of the Anticancer Effects of Arvanil and Olvanil When Combined with Cisplatin and Mitoxantrone in Various Melanoma Cell Lines-An Isobolographic Analysis

Pawel Marzeda, Paula Wroblewska-Luczka, Magdalena Florek-Luszczki, Malgorzata Drozd, Agnieszka Goralczyk, Jarogniew J. Luszczki

Summary: The drugs Arvanil and Olvanil have the ability to stimulate both TPRV1 and CB1 receptors due to their unique structures, making them interesting candidates for carcinoma treatment. This study investigated the effects of Arvanil and Olvanil alone and in combination with cisplatin (CDDP) and mitoxantrone (MTX) on malignant melanoma cell lines. The results showed that both Arvanil and Olvanil inhibited the viability and proliferation of melanoma cells, with additive interactions observed with MTX and antagonistic interactions observed with CDDP. It is suggested that the combination of Arvanil or Olvanil with MTX may be a potential multi-drug therapy for melanoma, while caution should be taken when combining these compounds with CDDP.

Development of Alternative Protein Sources in Terms of a Sustainable System

Pawel Sobczak, Jozef Grochowicz, Patrycja Lusiak, Wioletta Zukiewicz-Sobczak

Summary: Epidemiological studies, changing dietary trends, and climate change are the main factors influencing consumer choices. Despite food overproduction and overconsumption, proper nutrition poses a problem. Traditional protein sources are no longer attractive due to changing dietary trends, leading to a shift towards alternative protein sources. Scientific research is targeting previously underestimated alternative raw materials and products, and their biological activity often astonishes researchers.

Fraxetin Interacts Additively with Cisplatin and Mitoxantrone, Antagonistically with Docetaxel in Various Human Melanoma Cell Lines-An Isobolographic Analysis

Paula Wroblewska-Luczka, Aneta Grabarska, Agnieszka Goralczyk, Pawel Marzeda, Jarogniew J. Luszczki

Summary: Malignant melanoma is a highly aggressive and deadly form of skin cancer. The development of drug resistance and early metastases in melanoma necessitate the exploration of new therapeutic approaches. This study evaluated the cytotoxic and antiproliferative effects of scoparone and fraxetin, alone and in combination with three cytostatics, on human melanoma cell lines. Fraxetin exhibited inhibitory effects on cell proliferation, particularly in certain cell lines, and showed additive interactions when combined with cisplatin and mitoxantrone. However, the combination of fraxetin with docetaxel seemed to have an antagonistic effect, potentially limiting its therapeutic value in melanoma treatment.
