This article reviews an effective route in the functionalization of alpha-phenyl-chloroacetylated syndiotactic polystyrene (alpha-ph-ch-sPS) with 9-decen-1-oxy derived from 9-decen-1-ol moiety, and graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer onto sPS backbone using free radical polymerization in a heterogeneous process condition. The structures of alpha-ph-ch-sPS, vinyl terminated syndiotactic polystyrene multicentre macromonomer (VsPSM), and the sPS-g-PMMA were determined by H-1-NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. The thermal properties of the graft copolymer were examined by TGA and DSC. It was found that the presence of the graft segments, should affected the melting behavior and glass transition temperature of the sPS backbone.
