Soluble aromatic and carboxyl- and hydroxyl-containing polyimides, mixed polyimides, and polyquinazolones of various chemical structures, as well as a series of new dicyanoazobenzene chromophores, are synthesized. From 20 to 80 mol % of chromophore groups are incorporated into side chains of the polymers. The thermal, photosensitive, and nonlinear optical properties (second-harmonic generation) of the chromophore-containing polymers are investigated. The polymers with covalently attached groups of the dye DR-13 or azo-derivatives of 4-phthalonitrile demonstrate the highest nonlinearity. The T-g values of the polyimides vary from 165 to 215 degrees C; their temperatures corresponding to 5% weight loss lie in the range 290-350 degrees C; and the measured coefficients of second-harmonic generation, d(33), for a number of polarized films based on chromophore-containing polymers attain several tens of picometers per volt. The incorporation of chromophore groups into the side chains of the polymers causes an increase in the photosensitivity of polyimides by an order of magnitude relative to that of the parent polymers (S-0.1 = (3-4) x 10(5) cm(2)/J in the range of dye absorption).

Selenium-containing Nanosystems based on Amphiphilic Molecular Brushes with a Variable Degree of Polymerization of the Side Chains in Aqueous and Organic Media

S. V. Valueva, M. E. Vylegzhanina, K. A. Mitusova, A. Ya Volkov, T. K. Meleshko, I. Ivanov, A. Yakimansky

Summary: The study demonstrates that the morphological and spectral characteristics of Se-0/graft-CP nanostructures can be controlled by varying the degree of polymerization m of the side chains of the amphiphilic molecular brushes. Additionally, the nature of the solvent has an impact on the morphology of thin films of graft-SP on mica, affecting the loading of Se-0 nanoparticles.

Mikhail Ya Goikhman, Irina A. Valieva, Nairi L. Loretsyan, Irina Podeshvo, Iosif Gofman, Ruslan Yu Smyslov, Larissa S. Litvinova, Natalia Tsvigun, Alexander Yakimansky

Summary: Several new 2,8-diphenylpyrido[3,2-g]quinoline-4,6-dicarbohydrazides were synthesized and copolyhydrazides based on them were obtained. Investigations on molecular weight, thermal, stress-strain, and optical properties revealed that all polymer films exhibited significant luminescence in the 450-650 nm region, with the profile and intensity depending on the nature and position of substituents in the phenylene fragment.

Bacterial Cellulose-Based Nanocomposites Containing Ceria and Their Use in the Process of Stem Cell Proliferation

Iosif Gofman, Alexandra L. Nikolaeva, Albert K. Khripunov, Elena M. Ivan'kova, Anton S. Shabunin, Alexander Yakimansky, Dmitriy P. Romanov, Anton L. Popov, Artem M. Ermakov, Sergey O. Solomevich, Pavel M. Bychkovsky, Alexander E. Baranchikov, Vladimir K. Ivanov

Summary: A technique for fabricating bacterial cellulose-based films with CeO2 nanofiller has been developed, showing improved thermal and mechanical properties. The inclusion of CeO2 nanoparticles led to increased elastic modulus and strength of the films. Studies on stem cell proliferation on the composite films demonstrated enhanced cell activity, which was attributed to the improved cultivation conditions on CeO2-containing scaffolds.

Microcrystal ordering and second-order optical susceptibilities of zinc oxide films

I. Maslyanitsyn, I. Hayrullina, V. Shigorin, V. Voronov, I. Nagovitsyn, V. Savranskii, N. Novikov, A. Lobanov, G. Chudinova

Summary: This study investigated the second harmonic generation in zinc oxide films deposited by the hydrothermal method. The correlation between second-order optical susceptibility tensor components d(311) and d(333) was studied, and the origin and factors influencing the film nonlinearities were discussed. It was found that the change of stacking sequences and the inhomogeneous distribution of nonlinearities over the film thickness hindered the investigations of the thickness dependence of ZnO film nonlinearities.
