Summary: Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) have emerged as a biodegradable alternative to petrochemical-based plastics. They are mainly produced from microorganisms and have shown great potential in medical and pharmaceutical applications. However, there are several drawbacks associated with PHAs, such as brittleness and thermal instability. Therefore, modifications are necessary to improve their properties. Blending with other materials and adding additives/reinforcements are the major approaches in modifying PHAs. Understanding the morphology and crystallization behavior of PHA-based blends and composites is crucial for controlling their properties.

Summary: We studied low-salt, binary aqueous suspensions of charged colloidal spheres with a size ratio of 0.57. The typical phase formed is a substitutional alloy with a body centered cubic structure. We also prepared the same samples using a different method which resulted in a complex sequence of gradients and a variety of microstructures. The observed crystallization processes are not volume-filling and the formed alloys are thermodynamically metastable without solid-fluid interfaces.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that hyaluronic acid (HA) can influence the morphology and phase of calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals, promoting the transformation of CaOx crystals in aqueous solution. Particularly, in artificial urine media, the addition of HA resulted in the formation of calcium oxalate dihydrate (COD) crystals with tetragonal bipyramidal morphology.

Summary: Carbon fiber reinforced polyether ether ketone (PEEK/CF) composites have been widely used in various fields due to their diverse advantages. However, the high melt viscosity of PEEK affects their processing performance. By introducing a liquid crystal polymer (LCP) as a new strategy, the processing and mechanical performance of PEEK/CF can be improved.

Summary: This paper points out the incorrect use of the linear least squares regression method in articles about the thermal characteristics of glass. It proposes a more accurate alternative method and analyzes the measurement uncertainty, which can be more than 50% of the parameter value, questioning the conclusions and further analysis.

Summary: Crystal morphology is influenced by several physicochemical parameters including temperature, pressure, cooling rate, nucleation, diffusion, volatile composition, and viscosity. Crystallization is a two-stage process involving nucleus formation and ion accumulation. The shape of crystals depends on undercooling (ΔT), and euhedral crystals grow just below their liquidus temperature. This study investigated and characterized crystal morphologies in different minerals in silicic volcanic rocks (spherulites) and ancient mining slags, which exhibited subhedral, skeletal, dendritic, spherical, bow-tie and fibrous forms depending on the cooling rate.

Summary: The distinct optical, catalytic, and electronic properties of few-layer MoS2 films can be attributed to the specific orientation of the MoS2 layers, which is controlled by physical conditions during sulfurization of predeposited Mo film. A comprehensive study using in situ grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering revealed that the gas flow and sulfur partial vapor pressure are the key parameters in determining the orientation of few-layer MoS2 during growth. Real-time tracking of the crystallization of few-layer MoS2 layers allowed for estimation of the activation energy required for both horizontal and vertical orientations.

Summary: The study elaborated PEEK/PES blends with partial miscibility by melt mixing with phenolphthalein, which was confirmed by DSC and DMTA analysis. Phenolphthalein acted as a compatibilizer and plasticizer for the blends, resulting in a softened PEEK phase and improved interfacial adhesion with PES. Additionally, the storage modulus in the glassy region of the blends remained similar to pure PEEK due to the aromatic moieties in phenolphthalein.

Summary: The specific features of crystal nucleation have a significant impact on the morphology of the crystalline material. Due to their small size and stochastic nature, it is usually difficult to observe the development of nuclei directly. However, an experimental approach using fast scanning calorimetry has been developed to determine the specific features of the cluster size distribution. This approach allows for estimating the time evolution of the largest detectable clusters in the distribution and determining their radial growth rate.

Summary: Regime transitions and morphology changes of biosynthesized PHA crystals were investigated using DSC and microscopic techniques. The study found that as the temperature increased, the crystal morphology of the PHA films changed, forming different crystal structures. The kinetic analysis also revealed the different stages of PHA crystal growth and the transition temperatures.

Summary: The self-nucleation behavior of beta-form isotactic polypropylene crystals in ultrathin films was studied, revealing a decrease in nucleation density with increasing self-nucleation temperature and heating rate, and a faster growth of alpha-iPP compared to beta-iPP. The high-temperature beta alpha growth transition was found to be absent in this system, indicating a lower free energy barrier for secondary alpha alpha and beta beta nucleation in ultrathin films.

Summary: The phase behavior of a newly synthesized compound was studied, revealing that with increasing alkyl chain length, a liquid crystal has more mesophases and transitions into isotropic liquid phase at higher temperatures. All compounds exhibit a chiral smectic phase with antiferroelectric properties, with the temperature range increasing with molecule length.

Summary: Whole genome bisulfite sequencing is crucial for methylome studies. This study evaluated the performance of 14 commonly used alignment algorithms for WGBS in multiple mammals and found that the choice of algorithm significantly impacts CpG site counts, methylation levels, and the calling of differentially methylated regions. BSMAP showed the highest accuracy in detecting CpG coordinates and methylation levels.
