Summary: In this work, a reactive flame retardant composed of DDP and PDPS was used to fabricate FR-PA6 with enhanced fire safety and melt spinnability. The prepared FR-PA6-5-5 showed a UL94 V-0 rating, reduced heat release rate and total heat release compared to pure PA6. The improved fire safety was due to gas-phase quenching and dilution effect, condensed-phase barrier effect, and synergistic charring effect achieved through the formation of P(=O)-O-Si.

Summary: Inspired by in-situ coprecipitation technology, Fe/Zn-layered double hydroxides (Fe/Zn-LDH) doped ammonium polyphosphate (APP) were prepared for high fire-safety epoxy resins (EP). Fe/Zn-LDH@APP showed uniform deposition on the surface of APP. Results showed that EP containing 4 wt% Fe/Zn-LDH@APP exhibited the highest LOI and passed the UL-94 V0 level. Furthermore, compared to neat EP, the addition of Fe/Zn-LDH@APP decreased the peak of heat release rate, peak of smoke production rate, and the fire growth rate.

Summary: A polyelectrolyte complex (PPA-PEI) was synthesized and added to epoxy resin (EP) to improve its flame retardancy and mechanical properties. The results showed that the EP/4 wt% PPA-PEI composite exhibited satisfactory flame retardancy, with reduced heat release and smoke production. The good flame retardancy was mainly attributed to the char residue with good barrier and thermal insulation properties, as well as the dilution and free radical scavenging effects in the gaseous phase. Additionally, the addition of PPA-PEI did not significantly affect the tensile strength and glass transition temperature of the EP composite, but improved its Young's modulus and storage modulus.

Summary: In this study, hydroxylated melamine (MOH) was synthesized and used as a charring and blowing agent in combination with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to develop an intumescent flame retardant for epoxy resin. The resulting APP/MOH system significantly improved the flame retardancy of epoxy resin, achieving a LOI value of 32.5% and reaching UL 94 V-0 standards. Compared to other flame retardant systems, such as APP/PER, the APP/MOH system exhibited lower peak heat release rate and peak smoke production rate.

Summary: In this study, an organophosphorus flame retardant (BHD) and a charring-coupling agent (DE) were synthesized and coated on aluminum diethylphosphinate (ADP) to form BD-ADP. PA6 blended with 12 wt% BD-ADP achieved a UL-94 V-0 rating and a limiting oxygen index of 30.0 vol%. By substituting 1.0 wt% DE for BD-ADP, PA6-1.0E not only achieved a UL-94 V-0 rating, but also exhibited a longer ignition time and improved mechanical properties compared to PA6-12A.

Summary: Biomass aerogels with high porosity, low thermal conductivity, environmental friendliness, and sustainability have attracted attention. However, their general flammability limits their fire safety. This study proposes flame-retardant bio-based composite aerogels for building energy saving. Alginate is used as the basic skeleton, while noncombustible nano calcium carbonate and boric acid are introduced to enhance flame retardancy and thermal stability. The aerogels exhibit high porosity, excellent mechanical properties, and outstanding heat insulation. Natural shells, pearls, and eggshells are also used to substitute nano-CaCO3, showing potential fire resistance promotion. This biomass-derived material has the potential to be a significant green building material.

Summary: This study designed a novel P-N macromolecule charring agent, poly(piperazinyl phosphamide) (PA), and demonstrated that adding PA in EVA/ammonium polyphosphate (APP) system significantly improved the flame retardant efficiency, forming a dense and sturdy char layer and reducing the heat release rate and total heat released. The experimental results were consistent with the analysis from molecular dynamics simulation, proving that PA was the key to boosting the flame retardancy of EVA.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biological effects of cancer stem cells (CSCs) irradiated by charged particle, including proliferation, invasion, migration, and changes in the molecular level. The results showed that CSCs have obvious radio-resistance compared with non-CSCs, and charged particle irradiation or in combination with drugs could overcome this resistance, specifically manifested in inhibiting CSCs' proliferation, invasion, migration, and causing more and harder to repair DNA double-stranded breaks (DSB) of CSCs.

Summary: Through a systematic review and meta-analysis of 37 cohort studies, it was found that an increased consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) per 250 mL/day was associated with a higher risk of breast, colorectal, biliary tract, and prostate cancer. Increased consumption of artificially sweetened beverages (ASBs) per 250 mL/day was associated with a higher risk of leukemia. Increased consumption of 100% fruit juice per 250 mL/day was associated with a higher risk of overall cancer, melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and thyroid cancer. There were linear dose-response associations between SSBs consumption and breast and kidney cancer, and between ASBs and fruit juices consumption and pancreatic cancer.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of head-of-bed elevation on patients with acquired brain injury (ABI). The results showed that elevating the head of the bed by 30 degrees can significantly reduce intracranial pressure (ICP), but did not have statistical differences on cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and disability at 90 days. Therefore, head-of-bed elevation of 30 degrees may be an effective noninvasive nursing practice for the prognosis and rehabilitation of ABI patients.

Summary: This study reviewed the effectiveness of intraoperative peritoneal lavage (IOPL) with saline in patients with intra-abdominal infections (IAIs). The findings suggest that IOPL with saline does not significantly reduce the risk of mortality, intra-abdominal abscess, incisional surgical site infection, postoperative complication, reoperation, and readmission when compared to non-IOPL. Therefore, routine use of IOPL with saline in patients with IAIs is not supported.

Summary: The CYP76 subfamily, which belongs to the CYP superfamily, is crucial for phytohormone biosynthesis and response to environmental stresses in plants. Genome-wide analysis of the CYP76 subfamily in seven AA genome species revealed three groups, with Group 1 having the largest number of members. Analysis of cis-acting elements showed a high number of elements related to jasmonic acid and light response. Gene duplication analysis indicated expansion mainly through SD/WGD and tandem forms, with strong purifying selection during evolution. Expression pattern analysis showed that OsCYP76s exhibit restricted expression patterns in leaves and roots. qRT-PCR analysis of CYP76s under abiotic stresses revealed specific response patterns and functional divergence between japonica and indica rice. These findings provide valuable insights into the functional diversity and evolution of the CYP76 subfamily and have implications for improving stress tolerance and agronomic traits in rice.

Summary: Green flame retardants have garnered attention for their environmental friendliness, but current options fall short in achieving high flame retardancy for flammable polymers and maintaining environmental protection. This study takes a two-pronged approach to address flame retardants and the flame-retardant process. An eco-friendly bio-based synergistic flame retardant (PAU), synthesized using phytic acid (PA) and urea (U), is used to create a flame retardant coating that can be directly applied to any surface shape using polydopamine as an adhesive. The resulting EPS-PAU exhibits excellent flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and light weight while only slightly increasing the density.
