Background The majority of caries lesions in adults occur on the proximal tooth surfaces of the posterior teeth. A comprehensive study of the composition of the oral microbiota is fundamental for a better understanding of the etiology of interdental caries. Methods Twenty-five caries-free subjects (20-35 years old) were enrolled in the study. The interdental biofilm of four interdental sites were collected. The real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methodology were used to quantify (i) the following bacteria: Streptococcus spp., Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus spp., Enterococcus spp., and Enterococcus faecalis; (ii) the fungus Candida albicans; and (iii) total bacteria. Results Streptococcus spp. was the most abundant species, followed by Lactobacillus spp. and Enterococcus spp. Streptococcus spp. and Lactobacillus spp. were detected at all tested sites and Enterococcus spp. at 99% of sites. S. mutans was detected at only 28% of the tested sites and C. albicans was detected at 11% of sites. E. faecalis was never detected. In 54.5% of the biofilm inhabited by C. albicans, S. mutans was present. Moreover, 28% of the ID sites co-expressed S. mutans and Lactobacillus spp. The studied pathogens were organized into two correlated groups of species. Strikingly, the fungus C. albicans and the bacteria Enterococcus spp. cluster together, whereas Streptococcus spp., S. mutans and Lactobacillus spp. form one distinct cluster. Conclusion The interdental biofilm of young caries-free adults is comprised of pathogens that are able to induce interproximal caries. That several of these pathogens are implicated in heart disease or other systemic diseases is an argument for the disruption of interdental biofilms using daily oral hygiene.

Multiple criteria decision analysis for therapeutic innovations in a hemophilia care center: A pilot study of the organizational impact of innovation in hemophilia care management

Karen Beny, Amelie Dubromel, Benjamin du Sartz de Vigneulles, Valerie Gay, Florence Carrouel, Claude Negrier, Claude Dussart

Summary: This study used multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA) to evaluate the organizational impact of innovative drugs for hemophilia care management. The pilot study involved French experts in hemophilia care management and found that subcutaneous administration of Factor VIII had the least impact on care organization, while gene therapy had the strongest impact. This approach can support treatment decision-making at the healthcare team level and consider organizational factors.

Epidemiology and Clinical Burden of Meningococcal Disease in France: Scoping Review

Alexiane Baloche, Claude Dussart, Pierrick Bedouch, Florence Carrouel, Gerard Mick

Summary: This scoping review aims to analyze the epidemiology and clinical burden of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in France by reporting epidemiological parameters and describing the clinical consequences and care pathway of patients. The incidence of IMD cases in France has fluctuated over time, with a decrease in Sg B cases and an increase in Sg W cases. The most frequently reported sequelae are severe neurological disorder, epilepsy, and anxiety, but data on sequelae and care pathways are limited.

Oral Somatosensory Alterations in Head and Neck Cancer Patients-An Overview of the Evidence and Causes

Reisya R. R. Riantiningtyas, Florence Carrouel, Amandine Bruyas, Wender L. P. Bredie, Camille Kwiecien, Agnes Giboreau, Anestis Dougkas

Summary: The present review highlights the changes in food perception among head and neck cancer patients, including taste, texture, temperature, and other oral sensations. These changes not only have physiological importance but also convey psychological and psychosocial values. Comprehensive assessment of patients' food perception can lead to personalized dietary interventions to improve their eating experience and quality of life. More studies on oral somatosensory perception with larger sample sizes and standardized assessment methods are needed to fully understand its impact on eating behavior and quality of life.

Induction of Antimicrobial Protein S100A15 Expression by Oral Microbial Pathogens Is Toll-like Receptors-Dependent Activation of c-Jun-N-Terminal Kinase (JNK), p38, and NF-κB Pathways

Denis Selimovic, Naji Kharouf, Florence Carrouel, Sofie-Yasmin Hassan, Thomas W. Flanagan, Sarah-Lilly Hassan, Mosaad Megahed, Youssef Haikel, Simeon Santourlidis, Mohamed Hassan

Summary: In this study, it was found that the antimicrobial protein S100A15 is induced by both gram(-) and gram(+) bacterial pathogens through TLR4 and TLR2 dependent mechanisms, respectively. The activation of NF-?B, ASK1, JNK, and p38 signaling pathways plays an important role in regulating the expression of S100A15.

Human Papillomaviruses in Adolescents: Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Pharmacists Regarding Virus and Vaccination in France

Lucas Dufour, Florence Carrouel, Claude Dussart

Summary: French adolescents and their parents show a certain level of distrust and lack of knowledge about the HPV vaccine. Pharmacists play a crucial role in promoting vaccination and restoring confidence in the target population. However, there are gaps in their knowledge, and measures such as training, computer alerts, and supportive materials are needed to improve the promotion and coverage of the HPV vaccine. Additionally, a majority of pharmacists support a pharmacy-based vaccination program.

Prevalence, Severity of Extension, and Risk Factors of Gingivitis in a 3-Month Pregnant Population: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study

Jocelyne Gare, Aida Kanoute, Giovanna Orsini, Lucio Souza Goncalves, Fahad Ali Alshehri, Denis Bourgeois, Florence Carrouel

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence, severity, and risk factors of gingivitis among pregnant women. A total of 220 nulliparous women at 3 months of pregnancy were recruited in Dakar, Senegal in 2022. Logistic regression analysis revealed that consuming more than five portions of fruits and vegetables per day significantly decreased the odds of gingivitis, while having a professional activity and high education increased the odds. Other important risk factors included dental plaque percentage and severity of clinical attachment loss. Increasing body mass index was inversely associated with gingivitis. The results emphasize the high prevalence of gingivitis and bleeding among 3-month pregnant women and highlight the importance of literacy and proper oral hygiene actions in improving gingival health.
