Summary: ApoE, apoC-II/apoC-III, apoE/apoC-II, and apoB/non-HDL-C could be novel biomarkers for the occurrence and severity of DR, while apoA-I and apoA-II are protective factors for DR.

Summary: In individuals with type 1 diabetes, the presence of cerebral small-vessel disease, especially cerebral microbleeds, is associated with more severe diabetic retinopathy. The number of cerebral microbleeds is correlated with higher ETDRS scores.

Summary: This retrospective observational study evaluated the hypoglycemic drugs and medical costs of diabetic retinopathy patients in the Beijing medical insurance system. The results showed that patients with retinopathy had more complications and higher drug costs. From 2016 to 2018, there was an increase in the number of medication treatments for patients with retinopathy, but a decrease in cost.

Summary: The study found that higher serum uric acid levels were associated with an increased risk of vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy in patients with type 2 diabetes, with females showing a higher sensitivity to high uric acid levels. Further prospective cohort studies are needed to verify uric acid as a biomarker for predicting the risk of VTDR and to investigate if decreased uric acid levels could decrease the risk of VTDR.

Summary: This study investigated the gut microbiota and fecal metabolic phenotypes in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) and identified differences in genes and metabolites between DR and non-DR patients. These findings provide potential targets for understanding the etiology and developing therapies for DR.

Summary: Using magnetic resonance imaging, we found that the optic tracts of individuals with type 1 diabetes were smaller than those of healthy controls, suggesting that chronic hyperglycemia also damages the optic tract. This damage was associated with various metabolic measures as well as diabetic complications such as eye disease, kidney disease, neuropathy, and cerebral microbleeds.

Summary: The study showed an inverse and independent association between miR-146a-5p levels and diabetes chronic complications in DM1 patients, particularly with cardiovascular diseases and retinopathy, suggesting miR-146a-5p may be a novel candidate biomarker for DM1 complications.

Summary: This study demonstrates that in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, those with diabetic retinopathy have lower levels of bone formation and resorption markers, with more significant associations in those with severe retinopathy. The findings suggest a potential link between the progression of diabetic retinopathy and deficits in bone metabolism induced by T2DM, calling for further research to validate these associations and explore underlying mechanisms.

Summary: This study showed that diabetic patients have lower levels of antioxidant enzymes compared to non-diabetic individuals, with a positive correlation between HbA1C levels and DR severity. Levels of SOD and CAT varied significantly with DR severity and were found to decrease with DR progression. Oxidative stress and decreased antioxidant defenses are associated with the progression of DR to its proliferative stage.

Summary: The medical hospitalization costs for patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD) are significantly higher compared to diabetic patients without complications, with higher costs and longer hospital stays observed for DKD patients undergoing dialysis. A direct correlation was found between average cost and duration of diabetes in DKD patients, while no correlation was found between diabetic nephropathy stage and medical hospitalization costs. Without preventive measures, DKD will continue to pose a heavy economic burden.

Summary: This study assessed the correlation between the degree of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and the severity of coronary atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The results showed a significant relationship between the degree of DR and the Gensini score and vessel score, indicating that the severity of coronary artery lesions increased with the severity of DR. The presence and degree of retinopathy were identified as independent predictors of severe coronary atherosclerosis.
