Certain food groups are often rejected during chemotherapy (CT) due to the side effects of treatment, which may interfere with adequate diet and nutritional status. The aim of this study was to evaluate the treatment impact on the diet and nutritional status of women with breast cancer (BC). In this prospective longitudinal study, conducted in 2014-2015, 55 women diagnosed with BC, with a mean age 51.5 +/- 10.1 years, were followed and data were collected at three different times. Anthropometric and dietary assessments were performed, the latter by applying nine 24h dietary recalls, by using the Brazilian Healthy Eating Index Revised (BHEI-R), and calculating the prevalence of inadequacy by the EAR cut-off point method. Regarding the BHEI-R analysis, the majority of women had a diet requires modification', both at the beginning (T0, 58.2%, n = 32) and during treatment (T1, 54.5%, n = 30). However, after the end of the CT, the greater percentage of patients (T2, 49.1%, n = 27) were classified as having an inadequate diet, since the Total Fruit consumption as well as the Dark Green and Orange Vegetable and Legume consumption decreased significantly during treatment (p = 0.043 and p = 0.026, respectively). There was a significant reduction in the intake of macro and micronutrients, with a high prevalence of inadequacy, of up to 100%, for calcium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium, niacin, riboflavin, thiamin, vitamin B6, vitamin C and zinc. Assessment of the nutritional status indicated that 56% (n = 31) of patients were overweight at these three different times. Weight, BMI and Waist Circumference increased significantly, indicating a worse nutritional status, and there was a correlation between poor diet quality and higher values for BMI, Waist-Hip Ratio and Waist-to-Height Ratio. Chemotherapy interferes in the patients' diet generating a negative impact on the quality and intake of micro and macronutrients, as well as an impact on their nutritional status, with an increase in anthropometric measurements.

A novel peptide-based electrochemical biosensor for breast cancer characterization over a poly 3-(3-aminophenyl) propionic acid matrix

Rafael da Fonseca Alves, Isabella Castro Martins, Diego Leoni Franco, Adriane das Gracas Silva, Paula de Souza Santos, Luiz Ricardo Goulart, Yara Cristina de Paiva Maia, Alinne Tatiane Faria Silva, Thaise Goncalves Araujo, Maria Del Pilar Taboada Sotomayor

Summary: In this study, a new electrochemical biosensor was developed using peptides selected by Phage Display as bio-recognition phase for Breast Cancer (BC) characterization. The peptides were validated and found to have stronger reactivity to a specific type of BC. A new matrix for immobilizing biomolecules was generated through electrochemical modification of graphite electrodes. The biosensor was developed by immobilizing the peptides in the system for the detection of BC tumor markers in serological samples. The biosensor showed better performance compared to ELISA test.

Where do Brazilian cancer patients prefer to die? Agreement between patients and caregivers

Talita Caroline de Oliveira Valentino, Marco Antonio de Oliveira, Carlos Eduardo Paiva, Bianca Sakamoto Ribeiro Paiva

Summary: There is low agreement between patients and caregivers on the preferred place-of-death (PPoD) in Brazilian cancer patients. Factors such as end-of-life clinical factors and palliative care support influence the choice of PPoD.

Time-Related Eating Patterns Are Associated with the Total Daily Intake of Calories and Macronutrients in Day and Night Shift Workers

Catarina Mendes Silva, Bruno Simao Teixeira, Kenneth P. Wright, Yara Cristina de Paiva Maia, Cibele Aparecida Crispim

Summary: The study investigated the association between time-related eating patterns and daily calorie and macronutrient intake in Brazilian male military police officers. The findings showed that night shift workers had later eating times, longer eating durations, and later caloric midpoint than day workers. Late eaters consumed more energy, fat, and protein, but less carbohydrates, compared to early eaters. The time of the first and last meal was correlated with energy and macronutrient intake, with different patterns observed for day and night shift workers. Eating duration was positively correlated with energy and carbohydrate intake in both groups. Therefore, eating later at night was associated with increased daily energy and macronutrient intake.

Eating Earlier and More Frequently Is Associated With Better Diet Quality in Female Brazilian Breast Cancer Survivors Using Tamoxifen

Mariana T. M. Lima, Fernanda S. M. Nunes, Isis D. D. Custodio, Kamila P. Carvalho, Paula P. L. Canto, Carlos E. Paiva, Cibele A. Crispim, Yara C. Paiva Maia

Summary: This study examines the association of eating time and frequency with diet quality, quantity of food consumption, anthropometric measurements, and body composition parameters in female breast cancer survivors. The study finds that earlier food intake time is associated with better diet quality and lower daily energy consumption. Higher frequency of eating is also associated with better diet quality. However, there are no significant associations between eating time and frequency with anthropometric measurements and body composition parameters.

Stabilization of Anthocyanins from Coffee (Coffea arabica L.) Husks and In Vivo Evaluation of Their Antioxidant Activity

Jose Daniel Lozada-Ramirez, Maria Cristina Guerrero-Moras, Marco Antonio Gonzalez-Pena, Taisa Sabrina Silva-Pereira, Cecilia Anaya de Parrodi, Ana E. Ortega-Regules

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the stability of anthocyanins extracted from coffee husks by using three different extracting agents and stabilizing them with zinc oxide nanoparticles. The results showed that the total phenolic compounds of the nanoparticle-anthocyanin conjugates remained stable after stabilization, with a major loss of less than 3%. Additionally, the degradation percentage of anthocyanins was less than 5% after 12 weeks of storage. Both fresh anthocyanin extracts and anthocyanin-nanoparticle conjugates exhibited a strong protective effect against oxidative stress and increased the survival rate of Caenorhabditis elegans.

Summary: A recent US national survey has drawn attention to the little-studied relationship between testosterone hormone therapy in transgender men and cardiovascular outcomes. This systematic review aimed to assess the association between hormone therapy in transgender men and lipid profiles and cardiovascular risk. The findings suggest that hormone therapy may lead to a decrease in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, but further studies are needed to establish cardiovascular risk.
