Summary: By using African giant pouched rats to sniff sputum and identify TB patients, the method shows high sensitivity and specificity at the sample level, outperforming a single ZN screening. Although the sensitivity is slightly lower at the patient level, the rats are still able to effectively differentiate between healthy individuals and TB patients.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the causes of smear-positive-culture-negative (S+/C-) outcomes in tuberculosis patients during treatment. A retrospective study was conducted at Beijing Chest Hospital in China. The results showed that the S+/C- rates were higher in the liquid culture group compared to the solid culture group.

Summary: The study suggests that post-bronchoscopy sputum (PBS) can improve the diagnostic yield for pauci-bacillary pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) by 20%, and about 8% of patients can be rapidly diagnosed with positive AFB smear microscopy for PBS. Therefore, the use of PBS as a complementary diagnostic approach should be considered for patients with suspected pauci-bacillary PTB.

Summary: In this study, we enrolled 127 patients with pleural effusion and found that sputum Xpert had a higher sensitivity in diagnosing pleural tuberculosis compared to pleural effusion Xpert. The combination of sputum and pleural effusion testing showed a higher sensitivity in diagnosing pleural tuberculosis.

Summary: This study verified the effectiveness and safety of endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial biopsy (EBUS-TBB) in diagnosing sputum smear-negative pulmonary TB. The EBUS echoic feature was found to be a predictor of the positive TB culture rate in pulmonary TB. However, tissue culture via EBUS-TBB had little effect in improving the positive TB culture rate.

Summary: In this study conducted in Kenya, the diagnostic performance of oral swab analysis (OSA) for tuberculosis (TB) was evaluated. The results showed that the sensitivity of buccal swabs varied depending on the reference standard used, with a sensitivity of 65.0% for sputum Xpert/culture and 76.5% for sputum Xpert alone. The sensitivity of buccal swabs was higher among HIV-infected individuals, but further optimization and evaluation of its utility in different settings are needed.

Summary: This study found that next-generation metagenome sequencing (mNGS) using bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples has high accuracy in the differential diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and non-tuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD). Specifically, mNGS combined with Xpert can improve the detection of PTB, especially in acid-fast staining (AFS) sputum smear-negative samples from patients with compromised immune states or poor responses to empirical antibiotics.

Summary: This retrospective study conducted in three government health clinics in Sabah, Malaysia on newly diagnosed smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis patients from 2017 to 2019 showed that 8.8% of patients did not convert to smear negative at the end of the intensive treatment phase. Older patients (age >= 60), foreigners, and patients with higher sputum bacillary load at diagnosis were more likely to have delayed sputum smear conversion. Healthcare providers should be aware of these factors and ensure proper follow-up treatment for patients.

Summary: The study aimed to clarify the differences in chest CT features between pulmonary TB patients with culture-positive and culture-negative sputum for non-mycobacteria. Chest CT features such as emphysematous lesions, ground-glass opacities, and airspace consolidation were more frequently seen in patients with a positive culture for non-mycobacteria, which could be helpful for detecting complications with non-mycobacterial pneumonia in patients with pulmonary TB.

Summary: This research proposes a general framework named MASA to solve the problem of anomalous connected subgraph detection in multi-attributed networks. By formulating and optimizing complex nonparametric scan statistic functions, the joint anomalousness of connected subgraphs and attributes subset in multi-attributed networks is measured, and an efficient approximation algorithm is presented. Extensive experimental evaluations on real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach.
