Summary: This narrative review discusses the effects of front-of-pack labels (FOPLs) on purchasing behavior, dietary patterns, and food reformulation. Non-directive FOPLs are well-accepted but require cognitive effort. Directive FOPLs are supported in studies and help consumers rank food products based on their healthiness.

Summary: Nutrient profiling and front-of-pack labeling (FOPL) have been developed to categorize food products based on their nutrient content and communicate this information to consumers. This study investigates the correlations between different food health scales and sustainability indicators. Results show that healthy and sustainable diets are strongly correlated with environmental indicators, while FOPLs based on portions or 100 g show moderate and weak correlations, respectively. FOPLs based on portions are more likely to achieve the goal of communicating healthiness and sustainability in a simple format.

Summary: The 2022 Front-of-pack labels (FOPLs) aim to communicate the health value of food items to consumers and support public health policies. However, directive FOPLs like Nutri-Score have drawbacks such as overemphasizing selected nutritional factors, ignoring the food matrix and holistic aspects of nourishment, and allowing ultra-processed products. In contrast, informative FOPLs focus on individual portions and avoid classifying foods as healthy or unhealthy. The adoption of FOPLs has not been effectively linked to improvements in health outcomes.

Summary: The equity of nutrition interventions is crucial in reducing socioeconomic health disparities. Front-of-pack nutrition labels play a vital role in providing accessible and comprehensible information for product packages, especially for those who have limited access to other forms of nutrition information. This study demonstrates that interpretive front-of-pack nutrition labels are equitable and effective interventions.

Summary: The study shows that general sustainability labels have a significant impact on food choices of U.K. consumers. Labeled products are preferred by consumers and they are willing to pay more for these products. The level of environmental concern is a key factor influencing consumers' preference for labeled products over non-labeled ones.

Summary: This study assessed the effectiveness of five front-of-pack food labels in guiding consumers towards healthier choices. The Nutri-Score and Multiple Traffic Lights performed best in terms of improving consumers' understanding and simulated choice outcomes, while the Reference Intakes performed the weakest. The results indicate that front-of-pack labels that effectively guide consumers towards healthier options can also help steer them away from unhealthy choices.

Summary: India is facing a nutrition transition with an increasing demand for unhealthy packaged foods. To promote healthier choices, the Government of India is designing a new front-of-pack nutrition labeling system. The study found that a two-color Multiple Traffic Lights label performed best in terms of understanding and food choice outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the agreements and disagreements between two front-of-pack nutrition labeling schemes, the Keyhole and the Nutri-Score, in a Swedish context. The findings showed a good level of agreement between the two schemes for most food items on the Swedish market, but significant disagreements were found for plant-based meat and fish analogues as well as products based on cereals/grains. These findings highlight important considerations for the development of a harmonized front-of-pack nutrition labeling scheme in Europe.

Summary: This study investigated the improvement of South African food labels for enhancing customer evaluation of packaged food's overall healthiness. Through qualitative interviews and consumer testing, the research found that health warnings and low health star ratings were effective in helping consumers identify unhealthy products. The findings not only provide guidance for improving food labels in South Africa, but also offer insights for label format selection in other regions.

Summary: Excessive intake of energy, sugars, salt, and saturated fats is a significant causal factor of obesity and related non-communicable diseases. Various European countries have developed proposals for front-of-pack food labeling to assist consumers in making healthy food choices. The intention is to achieve a harmonized front-of-pack label proposal by Q4 2022, with the Nutri-Score and NutrInform Battery being the two main proposals receiving attention.

Summary: The study found that adult South African consumers generally have a positive attitude towards front-of-package warning labels on foods and non-alcoholic beverages. They believe that warning labels can provide concise information about nutritional composition, alert to health risks, are easy to understand, and can be beneficial for child health.

Summary: Research shows that consumers have different perceptions of front-of-pack nutrition symbols, with objective nutrition knowledge playing a significant role. The Stop Sign label is found to be more effective than the Traffic Light label in key outcome measures, but the Traffic Light label performs better in terms of nutrition use accuracy. Those with greater objective nutrition knowledge outperform those with lower knowledge, across different food nutrition profiles.

Summary: The Class learning outcomes (CLOs) of School of Packaging (SoP) at Michigan State University (MSU) were aligned with the competency-based, programmatic learning outcomes (CPLOs) rooted in the broad learning goals of the University (MSU-LGs). Consensus building with teaching faculty led to the development of six CPLOs related to the core curriculum, focusing on packaging system design, evaluation, professionalism, and teamwork skills. The mapping scheme aimed to ensure alignment of learning expectations from course to program to university levels.

Summary: Studies suggest that consumers often rely on limited information and fail to access the necessary information on drug labels, especially for older adults. Two experiments evaluate how novel label designs that use highlighting and front placement of critical information affect attention and use of information for older consumers. Results show that highlighting and front placement significantly improved response accuracy and time for older consumers, providing valuable information for label design regulations to enhance medication safety and usability for older adults.

Summary: In this study, we examined the information older adults consider important when choosing over-the-counter (OTC) medications. The research had two objectives: to identify the information they find important when selecting an OTC and when assessing its suitability for use. Focus groups consisting of OTC users aged 65+ were conducted, and the discussions were analyzed alongside survey results. The main themes that emerged were price, seeking advice, perception of efficacy, and perception of safety. This study discovered that older adults rely on habit-based decision-making driven by price comparisons and past success with products, rather than the specific information provided on the Drug Facts Label (DFL) required by the FDA.
