Summary: This review examines the gender differences in Parkinson's Disease (PD), covering biomarkers, genetic factors, symptoms, and treatment options. The findings confirm the existence of disparities between men and women in PD and provide new insights into the potential causes and management of the disease. The objective is to develop tailored interventions based on a better understanding of sex and gender differences in PD.

Summary: The study investigates whether there are sex differences in myelin in Parkinson's disease and if these differences explain some of the previously-described clinical presentation differences. Results suggest that sex differences in myelin are associated with tremor and asymmetry of motor presentation. Further investigation of the role of biological sex in myelin pathology and clinical presentation in Parkinson's disease is warranted.

Summary: This study found no significant gender-related differences in short-term clinical outcomes in ACS patients treated with BRS implantation, but the early outcomes of the magnesium bioresorbable scaffold (Magmaris) appeared to be more favorable compared to the Absorb scaffold.

Summary: Men with early untreated Parkinson's disease (PD) showed greater longitudinal changes in motor and non-motor features compared to women. They also required higher dopaminergic medication dosages over time. However, there were no sex-related progression patterns observed in biological biomarkers.

Summary: This study investigated the clinical differences between early-onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD) and mid-and-late-onset Parkinson's disease (MLOPD) in the Greek population. The results showed that EOPD and MLOPD have distinct clinical profiles regarding motor and non-motor symptoms, side of onset, and motor complications.

Summary: This study on Swedish cluster headache patients found significant differences between male and female patients in clinical phenotype, attack patterns, treatment, and lifestyle. Female patients were more likely to have the chronic cluster headache subtype, longer attack durations, and higher usage of preventive treatment. They also had a higher prevalence of a family history of cluster headache and were more likely to have attacks triggered by lack of sleep.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether there are sex-specific genetic risk factors associated with Parkinson's disease (PD) between male and female patients, but no significant differences were observed. High genetic correlation and similar heritability estimates were identified between male and female PD patients. Common genetic variations on autosomes may not explain the difference in PD prevalence between males and females cases at least in the current sample size under study.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the sex differences in gastrointestinal dysfunctions among patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The findings showed that female patients experience worse gastrointestinal symptoms than males, with specific symptoms such as inability to finish a regular meal and nausea being significantly worse in females.

Summary: This study examined sex associations to PD phenotypes cross-sectionally and longitudinally in large-scale data. Female PD patients were found to have a higher risk of developing dyskinesia early during the follow-up period, with slower progression in daily living difficulties, and a lower risk of developing cognitive impairments compared with male patients. The findings were consistent in both longitudinal, clinic-based cohorts and an online-only cohort.

Summary: This study analyzed sex difference manifestations in Spanish patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and found important differences. Symptoms such as depression, fatigue, and pain were more frequent and/or severe in females, while symptoms such as hypomimia, speech problems, rigidity, and hypersexuality were more noted in males. Women received a lower levodopa equivalent daily dose and had worse perception of quality of life. After two years of follow-up, the NMS burden increased more significantly in males, while the functional capacity was more impaired in females.

Summary: Early exposure to binge drinking and tobacco use is associated with higher odds of substance use disorders. By age 21, a small percentage of youth reported initiating past 30-day use outcomes, with Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black youth less likely to initiate at earlier ages compared to non-Hispanic White youth. This study provides evidence for effective prevention strategies targeting specific age groups to deter youth from initiating substance use.

Summary: Despite the negative health consequences of hookah, youth have misguided perceptions of hookah risks. This study found that youth who perceive hookah as neither harmful nor addictive are more likely to initiate hookah use at earlier ages. Prevention and education campaigns are needed to change perceptions of hookah harmfulness and addictiveness in order to delay the age of hookah initiation.
