Summary: Knowledge of cord care is essential for the health of newborns. However, many young mothers lack knowledge and practice of cord care. Living in rural areas, lack of formal education, and home delivery are predictors of low knowledge of cord care. No formal education, primary education, being a peasant, business woman, housewife, and prime para are predictors of poor cord care practices. Living in urban areas, higher education level, and delivering in a health facility are important factors in having knowledge on cord care, while having a higher education level, being employed, and being a multipara are important factors in maintaining a healthy cord.

Summary: This study examined the effect of umbilical cord milking (UCM) on preterm neonates with placental insufficiency. The results showed that UCM can increase the percentage of hematopoietic stem cells in peripheral blood, improve hemoglobin levels, and reduce the duration of oxygen therapy. However, neonates in the UCM group required more phototherapy during hospitalization.

Summary: Inflammation is a physiological state where immune cells respond to harmful insults. Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) have immunomodulatory effects and regenerative capacity, making them a promising therapeutic option for inflammation. However, the regulatory effects of hMSC on T cells, particularly in CD4(+) T cell memory formation and responsiveness, are not fully understood. Our study investigated the effects of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSC) on CD4(+) T cells and found that cell-cell contact and paracrine factors are necessary for the immunomodulatory effects.

Summary: Later cord clamping of >= 30 s resulted in a tendency towards metabolic acidosis of umbilical arterial blood in neonates of diabetic mothers and non-diabetic mothers. Umbilical arterial blood gas parameters at birth were similar in neonates of diabetic mothers and non-diabetic mothers.

Summary: This study detected and analyzed the levels of NT-proBNP in umbilical cord blood samples and serum samples from healthy term neonates during the neonatal period. The results showed that the concentration of NT-proBNP was higher in the serum samples compared to the umbilical cord blood samples. Furthermore, the potential effect of perinatal factors on the reference range of this biomarker needs to be further investigated.

Summary: This study aims to establish the reference intervals for cord blood haematological parameters in newborns from Mumbai, India. The median values and 95% reference intervals for various parameters were determined through analysis of 127 cord blood samples. The study found no statistically significant differences in the parameters between sex and obstetric history, except for MCHC.

Summary: The study compared the hematological impact of umbilical cord milking (UCM) and delayed cord clamping (DCC) in preterm neonates, and found that UCM was as effective as DCC in facilitating placental transfusion. However, UCM was associated with increased rates of interventions and morbidities, especially in extremely preterm neonates.

Summary: Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in neonates causes high mortality and long-term morbidity. Previous use of autologous cord blood for brain damage had limitations, while allogeneic cord tissue mesenchymal stromal cells (hCT-MSC) have shown promise. A phase I clinical trial was conducted to test the safety and efficacy of hCT-MSC in neonates with HIE, with positive results.

Summary: This study found that severe acidemia at birth in preterm neonates is associated with major neurodevelopmental disabilities at the age of 5 to 8 years. Specifically, abnormal umbilical cord gas parameters were linked to lower intelligence quotient scores, especially when using stricter criteria (pH <7.0 and base deficit <-12 mEq/L).

Summary: Recommendations for umbilical cord management in intrauterine growth-restricted (IUGR) neonates are lacking. A randomized controlled trial compared hemodynamic effects of umbilical cord milking (UCM) with delayed cord clamping (DCC) in 170 IUGR neonates, and the results showed that UCM significantly increases SVC flow, venous hematocrit, and CrSO2 compared to DCC, without significant differences in other hemodynamic parameters and incidences of polycythemia and jaundice requiring phototherapy. However, the need for non-invasive respiratory support was higher with UCM.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the predictive characteristics of cord blood pH, base deficit, and lactate in Meconium Aspiration Syndrome (MAS). The results showed that cord blood pH, lactate, and base deficit were associated with MAS in neonates, and can be used for early recognition and optimization of treatment.

Summary: This study compared the effects of cut umbilical cord milking (C-UCM) and early cord clamping (ECC) on hematological and clinical hemodynamic parameters in non-vigorous preterm neonates. The results showed that C-UCM resulted in higher hematological indices and iron stores, as well as improved initial blood pressure stability. Therefore, C-UCM can be an alternative to delayed cord clamping in non-vigorous preterm neonates.
