Summary: The study found that increasing the motivation of young Finnish males to quit smoking and snus was related to their perception of the harmful effects of tobacco and the number of attempts to quit smoking. The prevalence of daily snus use and smoking were 17% and 25% respectively. The willingness to quit snus and smoking was associated with perception of health hazards and multiple attempts to quit.

Summary: The study found that during the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a significant increase in the intent to quit among registered callers to the tobacco quitline. Health concerns were cited as the major reason for quitting, and cough and psychological difficulties were reported more frequently. Self-reported quit rates also significantly increased. To maintain these encouraging results, it is important to strengthen existing quitlines and other supports for tobacco cessation.

Summary: The study revealed a notable prevalence of tobacco dependence among patients with schizophrenia in Ethiopia. Summary: This study investigates the motivations and experiences of Oral Nicotine Pouches (ONPs) users. The findings show that participants often use ONPs along with tobacco cigarettes and/or electronic cigarettes, and the availability of preferred flavors is a key motivation for ONP use. Mint and tobacco are the most commonly used flavors, and Zyn and Lucy are the most commonly used ONP brands. The study also reveals significant levels of nicotine dependence and a substantial number of adverse events reported by ONP users.

Summary: Introduction: The US FDA plans to ban menthol as a flavor in cigarettes. This study examined the prevalence and changes in menthol use among US adult smokers from 2008 to 2019. Results showed that in 2020, 43.4% of adult smokers used menthol, with higher rates among black adults, Hispanics, females, young adults, and those with mental health issues. The increase in menthol use over the past decade suggests that a menthol ban could have a significant impact on public health.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between transitions among cigarette, e-cigarette, and dual use and sociodemographics, dependence measures, and biomarkers. The findings suggest that dual users are more likely to quit smoking compared to cigarette-only users, but the majority of dual users eventually return to exclusive cigarette use. E-cigarette dependence promotes continued dual use rather than smoking cessation, while a strong motivation to quit smoking and the sensory, social, and emotional enjoyment of e-cigarettes facilitate smoking cessation.

Summary: This study investigates the demographic factors and their association with the first nicotine product tried by youths. The study also explores the linkage between the first product tried and future nicotine product use as well as nicotine dependence. The findings indicate that the first product tried is influenced by factors such as gender, race, urbanicity, and parent education, and that trying smokeless tobacco increases the risk of multiple product use and higher nicotine dependence among youths.

Summary: This article conducts a narrative literature review to examine the contributing factors of disparities in tobacco usage and outcomes affecting Black Americans. It proposes potential solutions to effectively address these disparities. The study identifies historical factors, socioeconomic factors, targeted marketing/advertising, the influence of racism/discrimination, neighborhood socioeconomic disadvantage, and mass incarceration as crucial factors. The article calls for further examination of these factors as a key element in tobacco-focused research and interventions to eliminate the disproportionate burdens faced by Black Americans. It advocates for greater emphasis on the impacts of personal and structural racism on tobacco usage and outcomes affecting Black Americans.
