Objectives To examine awareness, treatment, and control of diabetes mellitus among the adult population in Bangladesh. Methods The study used data from the 2011 nationally representative Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS). The BDHS sample is comprised of 7,786 adults aged 35 years or older. The primary outcome variables were fasting blood glucose, diagnosis, treatment, and control of diabetes. Multilevel logistic regression models were used to identify the risk factors for diabetes awareness. Results Overall, age-standardized prevalence of diabetes was 9.2%. Among subjects with diabetes, 41.2% were aware of their condition, 36.9% were treated, and 14.2% controlled their condition. A significant inequality in diabetes management was found from poor to wealthy households: 18.2% to 63.2% (awareness), 15.8% to 56.6% (treatment), and 8.2% to 18.4% (control). Multilevel models suggested that participants who had a lower education and lower economic condition were less likely to be aware of their diabetes. Poor management was observed among non-educated, low-income groups, and those who lived in the northwestern region. Conclusions Diabetes has become a national health concern in Bangladesh; however, treatment and control are quite low. Improving detection, awareness, and treatment strategies is urgently needed to prevent the growing burden associated with diabetes.

Summary: Our study found that low-intensity smoking and later initiation of smoking in Asians are associated with increased all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory disease mortality, as well as a higher risk of lung cancer mortality. However, quitting smoking can reduce these risks.

Sleep duration of <= 5 hours did not show significant associations with cancer incidence and mortality. However, among postmenopausal women, both <= 5 and >= 10 hours of sleep duration were associated with an increased risk of cancer mortality.

Atypical structural connectivity of language networks in autism spectrum disorder: A meta-analysis of diffusion tensor imaging studies

Min Li, Yide Wang, Masaya Tachibana, Shafiur Rahman, Kuriko Kagitani-Shimono

Summary: This meta-analysis examined white matter connectivity abnormalities in language networks of individuals with ASD. Significantly reduced white matter integrity was found in all language-associated tracts in subjects with ASD compared with TD controls. In addition, structural disturbances of language networks in the autistic brain exhibit a leftward tendency, and more prominent abnormalities are observed in younger people with ASD than in adults.

Summary: This study aims to describe the prevalence and risk factors of the coexistence of stunting, wasting, and underweight among children under five in Bangladesh. The study found that the prevalence of coexistence declined over time, and identified low birth weight, age group 36-47 months, socio-economic poverty, maternal education, and maternal underweight as significant risk factors. The study also observed a lower incidence of coexistence in the 2017-18 survey compared to the 2014 survey.

Reduction in total and major cause-specific mortality from tobacco smoking cessation: a pooled analysis of 16 population-based cohort studies in Asia

Park, Yu Chen, Manami Inoue, Daehee Kang, Wei Zheng

Summary: This study examined the time course of mortality reduction following smoking cessation in Asian populations. Findings suggest that adverse effects of tobacco smoking persist for an extended time period, even exceeding two decades, contrary to current clinical guidelines. Additionally, women who quit smoking for over 5 years still have significantly elevated mortality rates for all causes, cardiovascular disease, and lung cancer.

Trends in, projections of, and inequalities in reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health service coverage in Vietnam 2000-2030: A Bayesian analysis at national and sub-national levels

Phuong T. Nguyen, Md Shafiur Rahman, Phuong Mai Le, Huy Van Nguyen, Kien Duy Vu, Hoa L. Nguyen, An Thi Minh Dao, Long Quynh Khuong, Minh Van Hoang, Stuart Gilmour

Summary: The study found various inequalities in RMNCH service coverage in Vietnam, with some health service indicators likely to achieve targets by 2030, but many indicators still have low coverage rates. It is suggested that Vietnam can achieve universal health coverage targets and other health-related sustainable development goals by improving government health system reform efforts, reallocating resources, and focusing on the most impoverished rural populations.
