Background: The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) is the mainstream measure for burnout. However, its psychometric properties have been questioned, and alternative measurement models of the inventory have been suggested. Aims: Different models for the number of items and factors of the MBI-HSS, the version of the Inventory for the Human Service sector, were tested in order to identify the most appropriate model for measuring burnout in Italy. Methods: The study dataset consisted of a sample of 925 nurses. Ten alternative models of burnout were compared using confirmatory factor analysis. The psychometric properties of items and reliability of the MBI-HSS subscales were evaluated. Results: Item malfunctioning may confound the MBI-HSS factor structure. The analysis confirmed the factorial structure of the MBI-HSS with a three-dimensional, 20-item assessment. Conclusions: The factorial structure underlying the MBI-HSS follows Maslach's definition when items are reduced from the original 22 to a 20-item set. Alternative models, either with fewer items or with an increased number of latent dimensions in the burnout structure, do not yield better results to justify redefining the item set or theoretically revising the syndrome construct.

Return to Work during the COVID-19 Outbreak: A Study on the Role of Job Demands, Job Resources, and Personal Resources upon the Administrative Staff of Italian Public Universities

Gloria Guidetti, Daniela Converso, Domenico Sanseverino, Chiara Ghislieri

Summary: This study found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, quantitative job demand overloads and perceived risk of infection can lead to increased emotional exhaustion, while colleague support plays a significant role in reducing emotional exhaustion. In addition, personal contributions in managing work-related risks can act as a protective factor for emotional exhaustion.

Understanding the purchase intentions for organic vegetables across EU: a proposal to extend the TPB model

Barbara Loera, Blain Murphy, Angela Fedi, Mara Martini, Nadia Tecco, Moira Dean

Summary: The study proposes an innovative model that integrates the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) with its main extensions to explain purchase intention for organic vegetables. Based on a survey conducted in four European countries, the results show that purchase intention is primarily influenced by positive moral attitude towards such consumption. This study provides relevant information on the relationships between antecedents of purchase intention and can guide interventions to encourage consumers to choose organic food.

Summary: The present study introduces a reliable tool, AQ@workT, to assess the quality of work life in academics within the Italian university sector. Developed by the QoL@Work research team, AQ@workT is grounded in the job demands-resources model and its psychometric properties were supported in three studies with a large sample of lecturers, researchers, and professors. The findings show that AQ@workT is a valuable instrument for university management to improve quality of life, manage work-related stress, and mitigate potential harm to academics.

Summary: This study tested the measurement invariance of the Spanish Burnout Inventory (SBI) among professionals across 17 countries and regions. Except for the Indian sample, all countries showed a good fit to the four-factor model. Using the alignment method, scalar measurement invariance of the SBI factors was verified across 15 countries and one Spanish region. The study also found significant differences in burnout factors among different countries.

Preclinical and Clinical Medical Student Attitudes Toward the Care of the Dying: Testing the 9-Item Version of the Frommelt Attitude Toward the Care of the Dying Scale

Barbara Loera, Giorgia Molinengo, Marco Miniotti, Paolo Leombruni

Summary: The demand for palliative care is increasing worldwide. This study evaluates the psychometric properties of the 9-Item Version of the Frommelt Attitude Toward the Care of the Dying Scale (FATCOD-9IT) and its capability to distinguish medical students with different attitudes toward the care of the dying and at different stages of medical training. The study supports the validity and reliability of the FATCOD-9IT and encourages its widespread use as fast assessment of the medical student attitudes toward the care of the dying.
