Background and Objective: The immune and infectious alterations occurring in periodontitis have been shown to alter the development and severity of cardiovascular disease. One of these relationships is the translocation of oral bacteria to atheroma plaques, thereby promoting plaque development. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess, by 16s cloning and sequencing, the microbial diversity of the subgingival environment and atheroma plaques of patients concomitantly suffering from periodontitis and obstructive coronary artery atherosclerosis (OCAA). Methods: Subgingival biofilm and coronary balloons used in percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty were collected from 18 subjects presenting with generalized moderate to severe periodontitis and OCAA. DNA was extracted and the gene 16S was amplified, cloned and sequenced. Results: Significant differences in microbial diversity were observed between both environments. While subgingival samples mostly contained the phylum Firmicutes, in coronary balloons, Proteobacteria (p<0.05) was predominant. In addition, the most commonly detected genera in coronary balloons were Acinetobacter, Alloprevotella, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Sphingomonas and Moraxella, while in subgingival samples Porphyromonas, Filifactor, Veillonella, Aggregatibacter and Treponema (p<0.05) were found. Interestingly, 17 identical phylotypes were found in atheroma and subgingival samples, indicating possible bacterial translocation between periodontal pockets and coronary arteries. Conclusion: Periodontal pockets and atheromatous plaques of cardiovascular disease patients can present similarities in the microbial diversity.

The familial trend of the local inflammatory response in periodontal disease

Mabelle Freitas Monteiro, Marcio Zaffalon Casati, Enilson Antonio Sallum, Karina Gonzales Silverio, Francisco Humberto Nociti-Jr, Renato Correa Viana Casarin

Summary: This study found that aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) patients and their children have a different local inflammatory response compared to healthy controls, and there is a familial aggregation. The cytokine profile and subgingival response imbalance characterized by decreased IFN-gamma/IL-4 and IL-10/IL-1 beta ratios were observed in both GAgP patients and their children.

Systemic circulating inflammatory burden and periodontitis in adolescents

Cecilia C. C. Ribeiro, Cadidja D. S. Carmo, Bruno B. Benatti, Renato V. C. Casarin, C. M. C. Alves, Gustavo G. Nascimento, A. R. O. Moreira

Summary: This study examined the association between systemic inflammatory burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and periodontitis in adolescents. The results showed that lower socioeconomic status and smoking triggered initial periodontitis, while systemic inflammatory burden of CVD risk played a mediating role. Sensitivity analysis revealed a dose-response relationship between systemic inflammatory burden of CVD risk and moderate periodontitis.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between low bone mineral density (BMD) and severe periodontitis in adolescents. The results showed that low BMD was associated with the severity and extent of periodontitis, indicating that adolescents with low BMD are more likely to have severe periodontitis.

IL10 promoter rs6667202 polymorphism is functional in health but not in grade c periodontitis patients: A pilot study

Summary: This study demonstrated the association between the IL10 promoter rs6667202 SNP and IL10 expression and production. In patients with periodontal health, the AA and AC genotypes were associated with lower levels of IL10, while in patients with Perio4C, other factors may be affecting the IL-10 response despite the genetic variation.

Summary: This study evaluated the taxonomic and predicted functional content of the subgingival microbiome of young patients with Grade C periodontitis under supportive periodontal therapy. The results showed that despite clinical improvements, the microbiome of these patients remained different from individuals without a history of disease.

Summary: This clinical trial evaluated the effects of a multispecies probiotic as an adjunct to mechanical debridement on changes in bleeding on probing in edentulous patients with peri-implant mucositis. The results showed that the probiotic group had a higher prevalence of restored peri-implant health and lower bleeding on probing at 24 weeks compared to the placebo group.

Naira M. R. B. Andere, Nidia C. Castro dos Santos, Cassia F. Araujo, Helvis E. S. Paz, Luciana M. Shaddox, Renato C. Casarin, Mauro P. Santamaria

Summary: The study compared the efficacy of aPDT and OFD in treating residual periodontal pockets in non-furcation sites. OFD was more effective in reducing PPD in deep pockets, but resulted in greater GR. Both treatments decreased levels of P. gingivalis, but only OFD reduced levels of A. actinomycemtemcomitans.

Probiotic consumption can modify the resilience of periodontal tissues in rats under experimental periodontitis

Luiz Fernando Ferreira de Oliveira, Pedro Henrique Felix Silva, Sergio Luiz Salvador, Edilson Ervolino, Renato Casarin, Luciene Figueiredo, Milla Tavares Ricoldi, Sergio Luis Scombatti de Souza, Flavia Furlaneto, Michel Reis Messora

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of administering Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HN019 on rats with experimental periodontitis. The results showed that the rats treated with HN019 had less alveolar bone loss, lower proinflammatory/anti-inflammatory cytokine ratios, and a different composition of oral biofilm compared to the control group. The consumption of HN019 promoted a protective effect against alveolar bone loss by modifying local and systemic microbiological and immunoinflammatory parameters.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the salivary proteomic profile of periodontitis-affected parents and their offspring to periodontally healthy dyads in order to find potential biomarkers for early diagnosis of this disease. The results showed that ANXA1, KRT4, GSTP1, HPX, A2M, and KRT13 were lower in periodontitis-affected parents and their children, while IGHG1, CSTB, KRT9, SMR3B, IGHG4, and SERPINA1 were higher. ANXA1 had the lowest abundance and was selected as a potential biomarker for periodontitis. The in vitro assay also confirmed lower ANXA1 production in cells of periodontitis patients.
