LIN28B is involved in stemness'' and tumourigenesis by negatively regulating the maturation of let-7 microRNA family members. In this study, we showed that LIN28B expression promotes migration and recurrence of colon cancer. Immunohistochemistry and reverse-transcription polymerase chain reactions were performed to detect LIN28B expression in colon cancer tissue microarrays, paraffin-embedded surgical resected tissues and cancer cells. Loss-of-function, migration and proliferation analyses were performed to delineate the potential roles of LIN28B in colon cancer. LIN28B was upregulated in colon cancer tissue compared to normal mucosa, and its overexpression correlated with reduced patient survival and increased tumour recurrence. LIN28B suppression inhibited the migration of SW480 colon cancer cells and facilitated the cytotoxicity induced by oxaliplatin in SW480 and HCT116 colon cancer cells. In conclusion, LIN28B overexpression contributes to colon tumourigenesis, and LIN28B may serve as a diagnostic tool and therapeutic target for colon cancer.

Determination of 129I in waters associated with coalbed methane using solvent extraction and accelerator mass spectrometry measurement

Ning Chen, Weijian Zhou, Yukun Fan, Luyuan Zhang, Shan Xing, Qi Liu, Xiaolin Hou

Summary: A method of separating iodine in waters associated with coalbed methane (CBM) was developed using evaporation and solvent extraction for the determination of I-129 and exploration of CBM resources. The I-129/I-127 ratios in water samples from a CBM field were found to be (1.6-2.4) x 10(-11), which are lower than environmental samples in Xi'an but higher than the procedural blank, indicating no measurable contamination during sample analysis and some input of modern water in the CBM water.

Effect of land use and vegetation coverage on level and distribution of plutonium isotopes in the northern Loess Plateau, China

Yixuan Liu, Xiaolin Hou

Summary: Ten soil cores were collected from the Loess Plateau in China to investigate the source, level, and distribution of plutonium isotopes. The analysis revealed that global fallout is the main source of plutonium in the area and severe soil erosion has resulted in significant loss of plutonium. Land use types, vegetation coverage, and topography play important roles in the preservation and redistribution of plutonium, and alfalfa shows promise as a restoration plant for mitigating soil erosion in the northern Loess Plateau.

Determination of tritium in large volume of seawater using electrolytic enrichment and LSC and its application for the East China Sea water

Tong Zhang, Huan Jiang, Ning Chen, Yongchang Wang, Mengting Zhang, Xiaolin Hou

Summary: A sensitive method for the determination of low-level tritium in seawater samples was established by enriching tritium from a large volume of seawater using electrolysis and ultra-low level liquid scintillation counting measurement. Through controlling the electrolysis conditions and optimizing the measurement parameters, a constant and optimal overall measurement efficiency of tritium was obtained. The method achieved a detection limit of 0.45 TU for tritium using 700 mL seawater samples, allowing for the determination of tritium in most seawater samples except for deep seawater. The developed method has been applied to determine tritium in the East China Sea.

Tendency of soil erosion dynamics by coupling radioisotopes and RUSLE model on the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau in response to climate warming and human activity

Peng Chen, Markus Czymzik, Zhongbo Yu, Ala Aldahan, Jinguo Wang, Peng Yi, Xiaolin Hou, Shouyan Guo, Minjie Zheng

Summary: Soil erosion has caused landscape problems in many parts of the world, especially in cold regions where permafrost conditions have changed due to climate warming. The Tibetan Plateau, strongly affected by global warming and human activities, has been a case of such erosion. Monitoring technologies, such as remote sensing and field surveys, have limitations in exploring soil erosion rates in this region due to resolution and disturbance factors.

Spatial variation and species transformation of 129I and 127I in the Central Arctic Ocean

Luyuan Zhang, Xiaolin Hou, Justin P. Gwynn, Michael Karcher, Ning Chen, Yukun Fan, Qi Liu

Summary: The study investigated the spatial distributions of anthropogenic 129I and natural 127I species in the upper central Arctic Ocean. It was found that the ratios of reductive iodide (I-) to oxidative iodate (IO-3) varied in different regions, with higher concentrations and ratios observed over certain ridges. Along the main transport pathway of Atlantic water, the ratios gradually decreased, indicating the slow oxidation of I- back to IO-3. This research provides insights into the marine geochemical cycling of iodine and highlights the potential of iodine species, particularly 129I, as indicators of changes in surface water redox conditions in the Arctic Ocean due to climate change.

Vertical distribution of plutonium isotopes from the floodplain and lacustrine sediments in Poyang Lake, China

Mingli Zhang, Zihan Zhao, Yanhua Wang, Yan Chen, Xiaolin Hou

Summary: This study investigated the vertical distribution of plutonium isotopes and 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios in sediment cores from both floodplain and lacustrine areas of Poyang Lake. The results showed different activity concentrations and atom ratios in the two types of sediments, with a higher activity observed in the lacustrine sediments. The 240Pu/239Pu atom ratios indicated that the global fallout is the major source of plutonium in the studied region.

A new hydrological climatic proxy in arid lake sediments: Iodine-uranium concentrations

Xue Zhao, Xiaolin Hou, Zhao Huang, Chengjun Zhang, Peng Cheng

Summary: Understanding hydrological changes in the past 2 kyr is crucial for determining the impact and causes of climate change, especially in arid areas. Sediment analysis provides valuable information for reconstructing past hydrology, but there are challenges in selecting appropriate proxies and interpreting their implications in specific lake environments. This study analyzes iodine and uranium concentrations in a sediment core from Keluke Lake, China, and finds a significant correlation between the two elements, suggesting their potential as hydrological proxies for studying dry-wet changes over the past 2200 years.

Plutonium-based radiometric dating of rapidly accumulated sediments in the Sanyuan sinkhole, southern Chinese Loess Plateau

Yukun Fan, Huan Jiang, Junli Ren, Xingxing Liu, Jianghu Lan, Peng Cheng, Qi Liu, Liangcheng Tan, Cheng Xue, Youbin Sun, Xiaolin Hou

Summary: Radionuclides are widely used for dating recent sediments, but their applicability can be limited by differences in sources, half-lives, environmental behavior, and measurement techniques. However, 239,240Pu shows significant advantages in sediment dating. Our study suggests that 239,240Pu can be a reliable tracer for rapidly accumulated sediment, and the input from surrounding soil erosion is an important source of sediment.
