Summary: Young patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) have a higher relapse rate and worse 5-year disease-free survival (DFS) compared to older patients, although the 5-year overall survival (OS) is similar between the two groups.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the epidemiology of childhood tuberculosis and identify predictors of death among children on TB treatment in Ethiopia. The majority of children had no known household contact with TB, indicating that they contracted TB from the community. HIV infection, under nutrition, age under 10, and relapsed TB were found to be independent predictors of death in children with TB.

Summary: Living-donor liver transplantation is a viable option for patients with hepatorenal syndrome. This study aimed to describe outcomes after LDLT among HRS recipients and determine predictors of poor renal recovery. The results indicated that renal recovery was important for survival, and the interval between HRS and LDLT was significantly associated with renal recovery after transplantation.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) for non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) through systematic literature review and meta-analyses. The findings are expected to provide meaningful evidence for early and rapid diagnosis of NTM, guiding treatment and improving patient prognosis.

Summary: This study used a medical decision analytical model to estimate the net benefit and costs of allocating deceased donor kidneys to preemptively waitlisted patients versus those receiving dialysis. The results showed that preemptive kidney transplantation was the best option from a patient perspective, but allocating kidneys to patients receiving dialysis was a better use of scarce resources from a societal perspective.

Summary: New tuberculosis vaccines have shown great progress in development, with mass vaccination of adolescents/adults potentially contributing cost-effectively to global tuberculosis control goals. However, the budgetary feasibility of vaccine programs is crucial, and targeted vaccination may present a more affordable approach.

Summary: This study quantified the contribution of HIV to the incidence and mortality of tuberculosis (TB) in South African adults and estimated the impact of different interventions on TB incidence. The results showed that HIV has dramatically increased TB incidence and mortality in South Africa, and antiretroviral therapy (ART) and TB screening played important roles in reducing TB incidence.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed all cases of infectious disease pneumonectomy from two reference centers in the past 10 years, aiming to determine the one-year survival rate and major complications. A total of 56 procedures were performed, with an average age of 44 years and female predominance (55%). The incidence of postoperative complications within 30 days was 28.6%, with empyema being the most common (19.2%). The study shows that pneumonectomy for benign disease is a high-risk procedure but can still achieve satisfactory one-year survival rate in selected patients.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the factors that influence TB survival in China. The results showed that regular sputum smear test could reduce the risk of PTB death, while history of PTB treatment could decline the risk in the first year. Age of 75-90 years and positive result of sputum smear test significantly increased the risk of PTB death for three and five-year survival, while age of 60-75 years could increase the probability of PTB death for five-year survival.

Summary: The study found that patients with SLE have a significantly higher risk of infection compared to the general population/healthy controls, including overall severe infection, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and herpes zoster. Heterogeneity and evidence of publication bias were present in all analyses, except for herpes zoster, with sensitivity analysis confirming the robustness of the results.

Summary: The aim of this study was to estimate the global TB incidence in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). A total of 104 studies were analyzed, revealing regional disparities in TB incidence among CKD patients, with the highest incidence observed in the African region. TB incidence was found to be higher in patients undergoing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, and extrapulmonary TB cases were more common than pulmonary TB. The study recommends active TB screening for this population.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the histological subtypes and prognosis of gallbladder cancer. The results showed that biliary-type adenocarcinoma (BTA) was the most common subtype, and tumors arising from intracholecystic papillary-tubular neoplasms (ICPNs) were often associated with BTA. BTAs not associated with ICPNs had higher pathological stages and rates of liver and perineural invasion. Patients with gallbladder neoplasms associated with ICPNs had a higher 5-year survival probability compared to those without ICPNs. These findings can help guide clinical decision making for the treatment of these patients.

Summary: The study revealed a significant improvement in survival for HCC patients in the United States from 1988 to 2015, which may be attributed to advances in early diagnosis and therapeutic approaches. Improvement in survival was associated with patient age, gender, ethnicity, and treatment methods.

Summary: This article discusses the degeneration of dopaminergic and other neurons in the aging brain, as well as factors that may contribute to an increased vulnerability to death of these neurons in the early phase of life. It also explores the neuroprotective effects of external supply or ectopic expression of certain secreted and nuclear factors on the midbrain dopaminergic system in the adult and aging brain.
