Summary: This study demonstrates the associations between serum ceramide levels and liver cirrhosis as well as viral genotype. Specific ceramide species are also correlated with factors such as diabetes and age. The serum ceramide profile changes following direct-acting antiviral therapy, with different effects observed for long-chain and very-long-chain ceramides in the liver.

Summary: This study found that concurrent FL in patients with CHB significantly reduces the risk of cirrhosis and HCC, as well as increases the rate of HBsAg seroclearance. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and investigate the underlying mechanisms of FL on CHB.

Summary: Chronic HEV infections are a significant issue in immunocompromised patients due to the absence of specifically approved antiviral drugs. A 24-week trial evaluated the efficacy of the nucleotide analog sofosbuvir in treating chronically HEV-infected patients, revealing the emergence of variants with lower sensitivity to the drug.

Summary: This study analyzed the composition of sphingomyelin (SM) in the serum of patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, and found differences in SM species among different genders, genotypes, and patients with liver cirrhosis. The levels of SM were more closely associated with liver function in male patients.

Summary: This study aims to identify patients with hepatitis B infection who are at a higher risk of developing cancer. The results show that liver tissues from hepatitis B patients can be classified based on the levels of messenger RNA produced from genes related to proliferation and inflammation. A subgroup of genes in this panel is associated with cancer development and shorter lifetimes in liver cancer patients. This new gene list has the potential to be used for molecular identification of patients with hepatitis B virus-infected livers and at risk of liver cancer development.

Summary: This study found that patients infected with HDV had reduced but more activated innate immune cell populations in the liver, and an activated, memory-like, tissue-resident HDV-specific CD8(+) T-cell cluster was identified. Antigen-nonspecific activation of liver-resident CD8(+) T cells may contribute to inflammation and disease progression in HDV infection.

Summary: Specific mutations in the HCV NS5A domain-1 are significantly associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), potentially impacting viral fitness and interactions with cellular proteins. Further investigation is warranted to understand the molecular basis of HCV-mediated oncogenesis and the persistence of pro-oncogenic stimuli despite sustained virological response.

Summary: The predictive accuracies of the PAGE-B and mPAGE-B models were validated in Korean patients with CHB receiving AVT. However, the modified PAGE(LS)-B model featuring the addition of LS value showed higher predictability than the PAGE-B and mPAGE-B models. Participants with higher risk scores showed significantly higher cumulative HCC incidence compared to those in the intermediate-risk or low-risk groups.

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major cause of cancer-related death, with chronic viral hepatitis being a significant contributing factor. The pathophysiology of viral-related HCC involves liver inflammation, oxidative stress, and deregulation of cell signaling pathways. Regular ultrasound surveillance is recommended for patients with cirrhosis and high-risk individuals with chronic HBV infection. Antiviral therapy reduces the risks of HCC development and recurrence. Various scoring systems have been developed to predict the risk of HCC development in patients with chronic hepatitis B.

Summary: The study investigates the associations between serum triglycerides and viral genotype as well as markers of liver disease severity in patients with chronic hepatitis C. The results suggest that there are sex-specific changes in lipid metabolism, with lower serum triglycerides observed in HCV-infected women compared to men. Male patients with liver cirrhosis and genotype 3a infection have reduced levels of certain triglycerides. These genotype-related changes disappear after direct-acting antiviral therapy. Interestingly, the levels of serum triglycerides remain unchanged during therapy in both sexes.

Summary: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) RNA levels showed significant variation between different tissue samples, with up to a 1000-fold difference. When replication was high, core RNA and S RNA levels were similar, indicating transcription from covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA). In patients with medium-high or low replication, enhanced expression of S RNA relative to cccDNA and core RNA suggested that HBsAg can be primarily expressed from integrated HBV DNA.

Summary: The study found that risk-stratified screening and all-inclusive screening for HCC in Australia are more cost-effective compared to no formal screening, with all-inclusive screening being the most likely cost-effective option at a WTP threshold of A$50,000 per QALY. Risk-stratified screening using a serum biomarker test may be cost-effective at lower WTP thresholds, such as between A$25,000 and A$35,000 per QALY.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed patients with bleeding pseudoaneurysms in the setting of chronic pancreatitis, showing that both embolization and surgery are important in its management, with the choice of procedure depending on local availability and feasibility of a particular technique. Intraoperative blood transfusion, surgical time, and blood loss were important indicators in the management of PSA.

Summary: Two weeks of diaphragm inactivity caused by C2SH resulted in reduced mitochondrial volume density, mitochondrial fragmentation, and a reduction of SDHmax in type I and IIa DIAm fibers. Type I and IIa DIAm fibers were more sensitive to inactivation compared to type IIx/IIb fibers. These findings suggest that mitochondria in DIAm fibers are adaptable to varying levels of activity.

Summary: This retrospective study reports the experience of handling SPN in a tertiary center of Eastern India over a 14-year period. Most of the 28 patients were female, and the common symptoms were abdominal pain and palpable abdominal mass. Despite the large size of the tumors, complete surgical resection was possible. The postoperative complications were relatively high, but no patients developed recurrence during the follow-up period.

Summary: This study aimed to assess whether esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) using carbon dioxide (CO2) insufflation affects the image quality of subsequent abdominal ultrasonography (AUS). The results showed that the use of CO2 during EGD did not significantly deteriorate the image quality of subsequent AUS. Therefore, it is permissible to perform EGD prior to AUS, which can improve the efficiency of examination setup.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical profile of acute on chronic liver failure (ACLF) and establish Cell-free DNA (Cf DNA) as a predictor of ACLF outcome. The results showed that alcohol and sepsis were the most common causes of acute insult. Cf DNA was found to be a better predictor of 28-day mortality, while CLIF-C ACLF was more accurate in predicting 90-day mortality.

Summary: Inflammatory cytokines like TNFa promote airway inflammation. Our study explored the mechanism by which TNFa increases mitochondrial biogenesis in human ASM cells, finding that it involves the phosphorylation of CREB and ATF1, which in turn co-activate the expression of PGC1a. We demonstrated that TNFa treatment of hASM cells resulted in increased mitochondrial volume density, biogenesis, and the activation of downstream transcription factors NRF1, NRF2, and TFAM via the pCREB(S133)/pATF1(S63)/PCG1a pathway.
