Summary: This study evaluated the association of sociodemographic and behavioural factors with low awareness of medication in Indonesian patients with diabetes. The results showed that irregular blood glucose monitoring, absence of comorbidity, no general medical check-up, age between 26-45 years, and lack of health insurance coverage were significantly associated with low awareness of medication. Therefore, healthcare professionals should regularly evaluate blood glucose levels, perform routine check-ups, prioritize patient satisfaction, and tailor interventions to improve awareness of diabetes medication.

Summary: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and impaired fasting blood glucose (IFG) is high among adults in India, while the levels of awareness, treatment, and control are still low. There are significant differences in these levels between different age groups. Multifaceted approaches, including improved awareness, adherence to treatment, and better preventive and counseling services, are crucial to halt the development of diabetes in India.

Summary: The study revealed that most patients with diabetes mellitus have dyslipidemia, but many are unaware or untreated for their condition, resulting in suboptimal control rates. Factors influencing optimal control of dyslipidemia include age, urban living, higher body mass index, lower glycated hemoglobin levels, hypertension, poorer self-rated health status, and receiving regular health check-ups.

Summary: The first national Health Examination Survey in Greece revealed a high prevalence of diabetes, with a low prevalence of unknown diabetes and a substantial rate of pre-diabetes. The majority of known diabetes patients were well controlled, with most receiving metformin treatment. These results will help authorities develop tailored strategies for disease prevention and management.

Summary: The study found that over a quarter of Chinese adults have hypertension, but only about one-fifth have their blood pressure under control, indicating low levels of hypertension awareness, treatment, and control in China. Factors associated with higher hypertension treatment include older age, urban residency, living in the Eastern region, and being overweight/obese, while hypertension awareness is also linked to being female. Poor hypertension control, on the other hand, is associated with being overweight/obese and belonging to a minority ethnicity.

Summary: This study utilized 16 years of follow-up data to explore the relationship between abdominal volume index (AVI) trajectories and risk of diabetes mellitus. Three trajectories were identified - slow, intermediate, and fast increase groups, with the latter two demonstrating significantly higher odds ratios for diabetes mellitus compared to the slow increase group. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring AVI trajectories in relation to diabetes mellitus risk.

Summary: This study investigates the prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) recurrence and its associated risk factors in China. The findings show that factors such as age, pre-pregnancy BMI, and OGTT levels during the first pregnancy are associated with GDM recurrence. Preconception counseling is important for preventing GDM recurrence in women with a history of GDM.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in a Chinese population with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Qingpu, Shanghai. The prevalence of DR was 10.1%, with non-proliferative DR being more common. Higher fasting plasma glucose and glycated hemoglobinA1c were identified as known risk factors for DR, while no association was found between lipid indicators and DR. Additionally, higher levels of urea nitrogen and urinary albumin were associated with an increased risk of DR.

Summary: The study found that active management through the BPHS program significantly improved hypertension control, with some improvement attributed to better medication compliance among program participants. Additionally, the study identified the need to tailor the BPHS program to the needs of younger patients to achieve higher levels of control in this population. Future investigations should explore ways in which existing healthcare management influences the success of the BPHS program.

Summary: Hand hygiene is crucial for preventing healthcare-associated infections. This study examined the changes in hand hygiene practices and promotion in 13 public hospitals in Sierra Leone following the implementation of recommendations from an operational research study. The findings revealed that the hand hygiene score decreased for secondary hospitals but increased for tertiary hospitals. Training and education, as well as reminders in the workplace, showed a decrease in scores, while system change and institutional safety climate domains had increased scores. Limited resources for hand hygiene promotion and lack of budgetary support and patient engagement programs are persistent gaps that need to be addressed.

Summary: An operational research study in 2021 provided recommendations to improve hand hygiene compliance in two tertiary hospitals. A follow-up study conducted between February and April 2023 showed that overall hand hygiene compliance improved in Connaught Hospital but decreased in 34 Military Hospital. The improvements in Connaught Hospital were attributed to more reminders, better infrastructure, and frequent supervision assessments, while the interventions in 34 Military Hospital were less effective, possibly due to hospital reconstruction.

Summary: Implementing IPC programmes in Sierra Leone has been challenging, with sub-optimal compliance found in three tertiary hospitals in 2021. A 'before and after' observational study conducted in 2023 showed an improvement in IPC compliance, with an increase in overall compliance scores and improved compliance in all core components. Recommended actions were taken, but a dedicated IPC budget and healthcare-associated infection surveillance remained as gaps. Operational research is valuable in monitoring and improving IPC programme implementation, and further actions, such as establishing a dedicated IPC budget and long-term implementation plans, are needed to reach the 'Advanced' level.

Summary: Biological invasions, especially by Spartina alterniflora, are significantly impacting the structure and functions of coastal ecosystems in China. Urgent efforts to control the spread of this invasive species are hindered by the lack of time-series data. By using satellite images, this study successfully generated annual maps of Spartina saltmarshes from 1985 to 2020, revealing a continuous expansion of Spartina along the coast. The invasion history and frequency of changes were found to be influenced by latitude, with low latitudes experiencing longer and more frequent invasions. Human interventions have contributed to the decline in certain areas, but natural spread remains the primary driver of its extensive invasion.
