Background: We aimed to assess medical students' empathy and its associations with gender, stage of medical school, quality of life and burnout. Method: A cross-sectional, multi-centric (22 medical schools) study that employed online, validated, self-reported questionnaires on empathy (Interpersonal Reactivity Index), quality of life (The World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment) and burnout (the Maslach Burnout Inventory) in a random sample of medical students. Results: Out of a total of 1,650 randomly selected students, 1,350 (81.8%) completed all of the questionnaires. Female students exhibited higher dispositional empathic concern and experienced more personal distress than their male counterparts (p < 0.05; d >= 0.5). There were minor differences in the empathic dispositions of students in different stages of their medical training (p < 0.05; f < 0.25). Female students had slightly lower scores for physical and psychological quality of life than male students (p < 0.05; d < 0.5). Female students scored higher on emotional exhaustion and lower on depersonalization than male students (p < 0.001; d < 0.5). Students in their final stage of medical school had slightly higher scores for emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment (p < 0.05; f < 0.25). Gender (beta = 0.27; p < 0.001) and perspective taking (beta = 0.30; p < 0.001) were significant predictors of empathic concern scores. Depersonalization was associated with lower empathic concern (beta = -0.18) and perspective taking (beta = -0.14) (p < 0.001). Personal accomplishment was associated with higher perspective taking (beta = 0.21; p < 0.001) and lower personal distress (beta = -0.26; p < 0.001) scores. Conclusions: Female students had higher empathic concern and personal distress dispositions. The differences in the empathy scores of students in different stages of medical school were small. Among all of the studied variables, personal accomplishment held the most important association with decreasing personal distress and was also a predicting variable for perspective taking.

Sleepiness, sleep deprivation, quality of life, mental symptoms and perception of academic environment in medical students

Bruno Perotta, Fernanda M. Arantes-Costa, Sylvia C. Enns, Ernesto A. Figueiro-Filho, Helena Paro, Itamar S. Santos, Geraldo Lorenzi-Filho, Milton A. Martins, Patricia Z. Tempski

Summary: This study found a significant association between sleep problems, daytime somnolence, and sleep deprivation with academic performance and mental health in medical students. Female medical students showed higher levels of daytime sleepiness compared to male students, and these factors were related to quality of life, perception of educational environment, anxiety, and depression symptoms.

Summary: This study compared a digital game with standard neuropsychological tests to assess postoperative cognitive dysfunction. The results showed that the digital game provided scores in agreement with standardized tests for evaluating visual perception and possibly short-term memory cognitive functions. Further studies are needed to verify the correlation of other phases of the digital game with standardized tests assessing cognitive functions.

Summary: This study used a digital game as a neuropsychological test to assess postoperative cognitive dysfunction and found that the game was able to detect decline in multiple cognitive functions. Due to its faster completion time compared to traditional tests, the digital game may be a recommended tool for assessing patients, especially the elderly and those in the early postoperative period.

Rachlin's Extended Self: Influences on a Brazilian Research Group

Joao Lucas Bernardy, Jessica B. Santiago, Jose Oliveira Siqueira, Paulo Sergio Panse Silveira, Altay de Souza, Marcelo Frota Benvenuti

Summary: We pay tribute to Rachlin's work and emphasize the self-control and altruism involved in researching and writing for posterity. We discuss the influence of Rachlin's work on a series of seminars at the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil), which were based on his book from 1989. We present empirical exercises conducted during these seminars to illustrate Rachlin's contributions to the science of behavior.

Modeling VI and VDRL feedback functions: Searching normative rules through computational simulation

Summary: We describe the mathematical functions of feedback for variable interval and variable differential reinforcement of low rates, which are solely dependent on schedule size. Using an R script called Beak, we simulated behavior rates and assessed various reinforcement feedback functions with great precision. Our results show that the best feedback function for random interval schedules was proposed by Baum (1981), while the model used by Killeen (1975) is suitable for random differential reinforcement of low rates schedules. Beak provides a foundation for a better understanding of reinforcement schedules and can guide future experiments in utilizing schedules as theoretical and methodological tools.

Better to be in agreement than in bad company A critical analysis of many kappa-like tests

Paulo Sergio Panse Silveira, Jose Oliveira Siqueira

Summary: In this study, we assessed several agreement coefficients applied in 2x2 contingency tables commonly used in research using dichotomization. We developed a general method to evaluate any estimator candidate for agreement measurement and found that Cohen's kappa is a measurement of association while McNemar's chi-squared cannot assess association or agreement. We concluded that Holley and Guilford's G and Gwet's AC1 are the two authentic agreement estimators with the best performance over a range of table sizes.

Histogram lies about distribution shape and Pearson's coefficient of variation lies about relative variability

Paulo Sergio Panse Silveira, Jose Oliveira Siqueira

Summary: Histograms and coefficient of variation are popular summary statistics, but have limitations such as not reflecting probability distribution properly and not being a true measure of relative variability. Density plots and Eisenhauer's relative dispersion coefficient are suggested as better alternatives to address these issues.
