Background: Obesity, especially visceral obesity, is known to be an important correlate for cardiovascular disease and increased mortality. On the other hand, high cardiorespiratory fitness is suggested to be an effective contributor for reducing this risk. This study was conducted to determine the combined impact of cardiorespiratory fitness and visceral adiposity, otherwise known as fitness and fatness, on metabolic syndrome in overweight and obese adults. Methods: A total of 232 overweight and obese individuals were grouped into four subtypes according to their fitness level. This was measured by recovery heart rate from a step test in addition to visceral adiposity defined as the visceral adipose tissue area to subcutaneous adipose tissue area ratio (VAT/SAT ratio). Associations of fitness and visceral fatness were analyzed in comparison with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Results: The high visceral fat and low fitness group had the highest prevalence of metabolic syndrome [Odds Ratio (OR) 5.02; 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 1.85-13.61] compared with the reference group, which was the low visceral adiposity and high fitness group, after adjustments for confounding factors. Viscerally lean but unfit subjects were associated with a higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome than more viscerally obese but fit subjects (OR 3.42; 95% CI 1.27-9.19, and OR 2.70; 95% CI 1.01-7.25, respectively). Conclusions: Our study shows that visceral obesity and fitness levels are cumulatively associated with a higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome in healthy overweight and obese adults. This suggests that cardiorespiratory fitness is a significant modifier in the relation of visceral adiposity to adverse metabolic outcomes in overweight and obese individuals.

Role of Enlarged Perivascular Space in the Temporal Lobe in Cerebral Amyloidosis

Han Kyu Na, Han-Kyeol Kim, Hye Sun Lee, Mina Park, Jae Hoon Lee, Young Hoon Ryu, Hanna Cho, Chul Hyoung Lyoo

Summary: By studying 272 participants with MRI and PET scans, we found that a high degree of temporal lobe perivascular space (EPVS) is associated with a higher likelihood of amyloid positivity in patients with Alzheimer's disease. This finding suggests that impaired perivascular drainage may be related to cerebral amyloidosis.

Inverse Relationship between Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D and Elevated Intraocular Pressure

Jun-Hyuk Lee, Yu-Jin Kwon, Hye Sun Lee, Jee Hye Han, Boyoung Joung, Sung Jin Kim

Summary: This study confirms an inverse dose-dependent association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and elevated intraocular pressure (EIOP) in a large sample of 15,338 individuals. Each unit increase in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D is associated with a 3% decrease in the odds of having EIOP. Compared to individuals deficient in 25-hydroxyvitamin D, those with insufficiency and sufficiency have a 28% and 49% lower odds of EIOP, respectively. Therefore, clinical assessment of intraocular pressure may be helpful in the treatment and prevention of glaucoma in patients with insufficient 25-hydroxyvitamin D.

Summary: This study investigated the association between dietary zinc intake and total deaths, cancer, and cardiovascular disease death. The results showed that dietary zinc intake was inversely associated with all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease mortality, but not with cancer mortality. These findings suggest that recommending optimal dietary zinc intake is beneficial for human health.

Albumin-myosteatosis gauge as a novel prognostic risk factor in patients with non-metastatic colorectal cancer

Yerim Kim, Jae-Hoon Lee, Eun-Suk Cho, Hye Sun Lee, Su-Jin Shin, Eun Jung Park, Seung Hyuk Baik, Kang Young Lee, Jeonghyun Kang

Summary: This study aimed to examine the individual and synergistic effects of different prognostic markers related to skeletal muscle quality and serum albumin levels in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). The albumin-myosteatosis gauge (AMG) was found to be a meaningful predictor of survival, with superior prognostic value compared to skeletal muscle index (SMI), skeletal muscle radiodensity (SMD), and albumin alone. Further studies are needed to determine their significance in different ethnic groups.

Effect of a 1-year tailored exercise program according to cancer trajectories in patients with breast cancer: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Jiin Ryu, Eun-Young Lee, Jihee Min, Sujin Yeon, Ji-Won Lee, Sang Hui Chu, Hyangkyu Lee, Seung Il Kim, Jee Ye Kim, Seho Park, Justin Y. Jeon

Summary: This 12-month randomized controlled trial investigates the effects of tailored home-based exercise programs on short-term and long-term physiological outcomes in patients with breast cancer. The study found that exercise interventions customized to patients' treatment phase, surgery type, and physical function can improve shoulder function, body composition, and insulin resistance. These findings provide guidance for the development of effective exercise programs for patients with breast cancer post-operatively.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the difference in independency enhancement between VR-based training for daily activities and cognitive and motor functional training in stroke patients. The results showed that after VR-based intervention, daily activities, cognitive function, and upper extremities function were improved. It was concluded that training for daily activities based on tasks with objectives was more effective when introduced early.

Predicting Mechanical Complications After Adult Spinal Deformity Operation Using a Machine Learning Based on Modified Global Alignment and Proportion Scoring With Body Mass Index and Bone Mineral Density

Sung Hyun Noh, Hye Sun Lee, Go Eun Park, Yoon Ha, Jeong Yoon Park, Sung Uk Kuh, Dong Kyu Chin, Keun Su Kim, Yong Eun Cho, Sang Hyun Kim, Kyung Hyun Kim

Summary: This study aimed to create an ideal machine learning model to predict mechanical complications in adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery based on GAPB factors. The data of 238 consecutive patients with ASD were analyzed using machine learning algorithms, and significant differences in certain scores were found between the complication and no complication groups. The prediction accuracy reached 1.000 and 0.732 on the training and test sets, respectively. Therefore, the machine learning model can effectively predict mechanical complications after ASD surgery.

Summary: This study investigated the association between waist circumference (WC) changes and the incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The results showed that an increasing WC trend was associated with a higher risk of NAFLD, independent of abdominal obesity status.
