Summary: This study aimed to characterize the beta- and alpha-globin genes and factors related to HbF expression in patients with a similar Hb phenotype to HbE heterozygotes. The results showed that rare beta and alpha-thalassemia mutations were identified in some patients, and an HbE level >= 35.0% may indicate the need for DNA analysis for HbE-beta(+)-thalassemia diagnosis.

Summary: A case of fetal cardiomegaly and anemia was reported at 25 weeks of gestation, with severe complications leading to the termination of pregnancy. Molecular analysis revealed the maternal carrier of Hb QS, the paternal carrier of Hb ZA, and the fetus as a compound heterozygote for Hb ZA and Hb QA. This study provides a reference for genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis in the Chinese population.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of 31 in silico predictors in globin gene clusters. The results show that CADD, Eigen-PC, and REVEL are the overall top performers, while SpliceAI is the best splicing predictor, and GERP++ and phyloP are the most accurate conservation tools. The study provides evidence about the optimal use of these computational tools under the ACMG/AMP framework.

Summary: D-limonene, derived from citrus essential oils, has potential therapeutic benefits but is highly volatile, posing challenges in pharmaceutical formulations. This study explores microemulsions as a promising delivery system for volatile compounds, with a focus on thermal protection for D-limonene. The results show that microemulsions can be formulated at room temperature and provide enhanced oxidative stability for D-limonene, making them a viable strategy for protection against elevated temperatures.

Summary: This study aimed to establish pediatric reference intervals (RIs) of hemoglobin fractions using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) in children and adolescents aged 1-18 years. The study found that HbA2 RI was 2.00-2.90% by HPLC and 2.2-3.0% by CE, and partitioning by age was suggested by CE but not by HPLC.

Summary: This study investigated the anthocyanin profiles of pigmented flower extracts from Geraniaceae and Lamiaceae plant species in South Africa, and assessed their thermal and oxidative stability. Lamiaceae pigments showed higher thermal and oxidative stability, potentially due to aromatic malonyl-acylated anthocyanin self-association and strong interactions with phenolic acids and derivatives.

Summary: The study showed that replacing methionine with leucine in NAD(+) dependent FDH can improve its catalytic efficiency and chemical stability. Under temperature and H2O2 conditions, the single mutant and triple mutant with methionine to leucine substitution demonstrated higher activity, while double and triple mutants significantly reduced k(in)(ef).

Summary: The aim of this study was to improve the oxidative stability of grapeseed oil by combining it with sesame oil. The addition of sesame oil increased the phenolic compounds, antioxidant strength, and oxidative stability of the mixed oil samples. The best formulation was found to be a combination of 75% sesame oil and 25% grapeseed oil.

Summary: Ionic liquids (ILs) have been widely used as solvents for organic synthesis, but their applications in polymer synthesis are still limited. This study investigates the use of ILs in copolymerization and shows that copolymerizing ILs can significantly improve the thermal stability of copolymers. The results indicate that copolymers with ILs have higher thermal stability and thermal oxidative stability compared to homopolymers.

Summary: High oxygen affinity hemoglobin (HOAH) is the main cause of constitutional erythrocytosis. The diagnosis of HOAH relies on specialized laboratory tests for mutations in HBA1, HBA2 or HBB genes. Phenotypic studies and electrophoretic analysis may not always be accurate. The measurement of venous P50, although important, is only available in a few specialized laboratories. A normal venous P50 value might not be sufficient to rule out a diagnosis of HOAH due to pre-analytical contingencies.
