Summary: This study aimed to determine the incidence and risk factors for pregnancy-associated venous thromboembolism (VTE). The results showed that pregnancy and the postpartum period are established risk factors for VTE, with a declining trend in the incidence during the postpartum period, which may be attributed to an effective prevention policy.

Summary: This study reveals a 3.2-fold increase in the incidence rate of pregnancy-associated venous thromboembolism (PA-VTE) compared to a previous study. Advanced maternal age, cesarean section, multiparity, and multifetal pregnancies increase the risk of PA-VTE. Obstetricians should be cautious of VTE, especially during the postpartum period, in high-risk pregnant patients.

Summary: Pregnant women with cancer have a significantly higher risk of developing VTE compared to those without cancer. This suggests the need for increased vigilance and potential thromboprophylaxis in pregnant women with cancer.

Summary: This study in Japan aimed to investigate the incidence and characteristics of VTE in pregnant women to reduce mortality rates. The results showed that deep vein thrombosis was more common than pulmonary thromboembolism, with antepartum VTE being significantly higher than postpartum VTE. Women with low risk of VTE during the antepartum period and those who had vaginal delivery had an increased incidence of VTE.

Summary: A study in Denmark found an increasing incidence of venous thromboembolism after a first primary cancer diagnosis from 2006 to 2017, but a declining trend in 30-day and 1-year mortality rates following venous thromboembolism. This decrease in mortality was consistent across different cancer stages, types, and treatments.

Summary: This study estimated the incidence of thrombotic events and related rare diagnoses in the US. The findings serve as a critical reference for determining excess morbidity associated with COVID-19 and vaccine pharmacovigilance, being the first US estimates for such events in a large, commercially insured US population.

Summary: This study assessed the incidence and predictive factors of VTE in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, finding older age, higher body mass index, and longer disease duration to be significant predictors of VTE occurrence. Further research is needed to provide more generalizable results to daily clinical practice.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis and systematic review to investigate the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) at high altitude (HA) compared to low altitude (LA) and identified potential risk factors such as susceptibility genes. The results showed that HA was significantly associated with a higher overall incidence of VTE and that this association persisted at 30/90 days post operation. Analysis of genes in HA-VTE patients revealed several targeted genes.

Summary: This review quantifies the burden of long-term gastrointestinal and genitourinary complications from radiotherapy and surgery for rectal cancer. The results show that over 10% of patients are hospitalized for these complications, with serious gastrointestinal complications being commonplace and late small bowel obstruction more common in patients receiving radiotherapy and surgery compared to surgery alone.

Summary: This cohort study aimed to examine the outcomes of cholecystectomy in patients with cirrhosis. Data from the UK were analyzed to determine length of stay, re-admission, case fatality, and odds of 90-day mortality in patients with and without cirrhosis. The study found that patients with cirrhosis had longer hospital stays, higher readmission rates, and increased mortality following cholecystectomy, particularly in emergency cases.

Summary: This study examines the association between a higher acute systemic inflammatory response and a larger decrease in blood hemoglobin levels in patients with COVID-19. Data was collected from all patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 infection admitted to a busy UK hospital from February 2020 to December 2021. The results show that a maximal serum CRP >175mg/L is associated with a decrease in blood hemoglobin and that a peak CRP >175 mg/L is associated with a larger decrease compared to a maximal CRP <4 mg/L.

Summary: This study found that there were associations between arterial pO2, pCO2 and pH and age, and the effects of pCO2 and pH on respiratory rate varied with age. Older patients had higher respiratory rates at higher pCO2 and lower pH values. This suggests that ageing is associated with complex changes in the physiological feedback loops that control respiratory rate, which has clinical relevance and may impact the use of respiratory rate in early warning scores across different age groups.

Summary: Observational studies have shown an association between the use of statins or aspirin and a decreased risk of HCC. However, the effects of a well-defined treatment strategy are still unknown. This study emulated trials to investigate the effects of continuous statin or aspirin use on HCC risk in patients with alcohol-related liver disease cirrhosis. The findings suggest that continuous statin use for 5 years may significantly reduce the risk of HCC in these patients, while aspirin use does not have a significant effect on HCC risk.

Summary: This study examined the prevalence of weak social relationships in individuals with cirrhosis and their impact on health-related quality of life and mortality risk. The findings showed that individuals with cirrhosis were more likely to report low social support, loneliness, and living alone compared to the control group. Low social support and loneliness were associated with lower mental health-related quality of life and increased mortality risk in cirrhosis.
