Background and Objectives: Poor adherence to medications is one of the major public health challenges. Only one-third of the population reported successful control of blood pressure, mostly caused by poor drug adherence. However, there are relatively few reports studying the adherence levels and their associated factors among Chinese patients. This study aimed to study the adherence profiles and the factors associated with antihypertensive drug adherence among Chinese patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in an outpatient clinic located in the New Territories Region of Hong Kong. Adult patients who were currently taking at least one antihypertensive drug were invited to complete a self-administered questionnaire, consisting of basic socio-demographic profile, self-perceived health status, and self-reported medication adherence. The outcome measure was the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8). Good adherence was defined as MMAS scores greater than 6 points (out of a total score of 8 points). Results: From 1114 patients, 725 (65.1%) had good adherence to antihypertensive agents. Binary logistic regression analysis was conducted. Younger age, shorter duration of antihypertensive agents used, job status being employed, and poor or very poor self-perceived health status were negatively associated with drug adherence. Conclusion: This study reported a high proportion of poor medication adherence among hypertensive subjects. Patients with factors associated with poor adherence should be more closely monitored to optimize their drug taking behavior.

Disease burden, risk factors, and trends of primary central nervous system (CNS) cancer: a global study of registries data

Junjie Huang, Sze Chai Chan, Veeleah Lok, Lin Zhang, Xu Lin, Don Eliseo Lucero-Prisno, Wanghong Xu, Zhi-Jie Zheng, Edmar Elcarte, Mellissa Withers, Martin C. S. Wong

Summary: This study evaluated the global incidence, mortality, associated risk factors, and temporal trends of central nervous system (CNS) cancer. The results showed that the overall incidence and mortality rates of CNS cancer were relatively stable globally, but there was an increasing trend in younger male population. Some higher Human Development Index (HDI) countries also showed an increasing mortality rate, indicating a need for further research and exploration of the reasons behind these trends.

Summary: This study investigated individuals' ability to adapt and cope during the COVID-19 pandemic on a global scale, and found an association between low resilience and maladaptive coping behaviors. The study also identified young age, female gender, and poorer financial situation as factors related to low resilience. These findings have important implications for the development of resilience-enhancing interventions.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the changes in body weight and cardiovascular risk factors and analyze their association in a Chinese population with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that weight loss was beneficial for hemoglobin A1c and triglycerides, while weight gain resulted in worsened blood glucose, lipid profiles, and blood pressure.

Summary: This study aims to assess the longitudinal changes in blood pressure and fasting plasma glucose in primary care patients with concurrent hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus, and explore the factors associated with their inability to improve these markers. The findings suggest that suboptimal control of blood pressure and fasting plasma glucose remains a challenge in primary care settings, and tailored actions to improve patients' adherence to healthy lifestyles are needed.

Martin Chi-Sang Wong, Junjie Huang, Yuet-Yan Wong, Grace Lai-Hung Wong, Terry Cheuk-Fung Yip, Rachel Ngan-Yin Chan, Steven Wai-Ho Chau, Siew-Chien Ng, Yun-Kwok Wing, Francis Ka-Leung Chan

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of long COVID symptoms among patients with COVID-19 in 4 major Chinese cities. The most common severe long COVID symptoms were fatigue, cough, sore throat, difficulty in concentrating, feeling of anxiety, myalgia, and arthralgia. Female gender, living with domestic workers, smoking, poor self-perceived health status, having >= 3 chronic diseases, chronic medication use, and critical severity of COVID-19 were associated with severe long COVID. Prior vaccination with >= 2 doses of COVID-19 vaccines was a protective factor.

Martin C. S. Wong, Junjie Huang, Harry H. X. Wang, Sarah T. Y. Yau, Jeremy Y. C. Teoh, Peter K. F. Chiu, Chi-Fai Ng, Eman Yee-Man Leung

Summary: By analyzing a large database of people with diabetes who received cystoscopy in China, a clinical scoring system was developed and validated to predict the risk of bladder cancer and guide urgent cystoscopy evaluation. The scoring system, based on independent risk factors, classified individuals into average risk and high risk groups. This scoring system can effectively stratify high-risk individuals who should consider earlier cystoscopy.

Factors associated with mental health among Hong Kong children: A population-based study of 4884 individuals

Junjie Huang, Vera M. W. Keung, Calvin K. M. Cheung, Amelia S. C. Lo, Sze Chai Chan, Wing Sze Pang, Lancelot W. H. Mui, Albert Lee, Martin C. S. Wong

Summary: This study explored the association between negative mental health conditions and demographic characteristics, socioeconomic background and health-related parameters in primary and secondary school students in Hong Kong. The results indicated that both very high and low parent expectations were risk factors for suicidality and psychological distress in primary school students, as well as psychological distress in secondary school students. Being bullied was a significant risk factor for all conditions in primary school students. Having one's own bedroom was associated with suicidality in primary school students, while having three or more close friends and higher life satisfaction were significantly linked to a lower risk of negative mental health conditions in secondary school students.

On a Moreau Envelope Wirelength Model for Analytical Global Placement

Peiyu Liao, Hongduo Liu, Yibo Lin, Bei Yu, Martin Wong

Summary: Analytical placement has shown effectiveness in global placement. The differentiability of wirelength models is crucial for gradient-based numerical optimization. This paper introduces a new differentiable wirelength model using the Moreau envelope to approximate HPWL, showing significant improvements in HPWL compared to the widely-used nonlinear wirelength model when combined with the electrostatic-based placement algorithm.
