Background: Pattern Recognition techniques can provide invaluable insights in the field of neuro-oncology. This is because the clinical analysis of brain tumors requires the use of non-invasive methods that generate complex data in electronic format. Magnetic Resonance (MR), in the modalities of spectroscopy (MRS) and spectroscopic imaging (MRSI), has been widely applied to this purpose. The heterogeneity of the tissue in the brain volumes analyzed by MR remains a challenge in terms of pathological area delimitation. Methodology/Principal Findings: A pre-clinical study was carried out using seven brain tumor-bearing mice. Imaging and spectroscopy information was acquired from the brain tissue. A methodology is proposed to extract tissue type-specific sources from these signals by applying Convex Non-negative Matrix Factorization (Convex-NMF). Its suitability for the delimitation of pathological brain area from MRSI is experimentally confirmed by comparing the images obtained with its application to selected target regions, and to the gold standard of registered histopathology data. The former showed good accuracy for the solid tumor region (proliferation index (PI) > 30%). The latter yielded (i) high sensitivity and specificity in most cases, (ii) acquisition conditions for safe thresholds in tumor and non-tumor regions (PI > 30% for solid tumoral region; <= 5% for non-tumor), and (iii) fairly good results when borderline pixels were considered. Conclusions/Significance: The unsupervised nature of Convex-NMF, which does not use prior information regarding the tumor area for its delimitation, places this approach one step ahead of classical label-requiring supervised methods for discrimination between tissue types, minimizing the negative effect of using mislabeled voxels. Convex-NMF also relaxes the non-negativity constraints on the observed data, which allows for a natural representation of the MRSI signal. This should help radiologists to accurately tackle one of the main sources of uncertainty in the clinical management of brain tumors, which is the difficulty of appropriately delimiting the pathological area.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of climatic factors on urban water demand in Iraq and developed a novel forecasting methodology. This methodology is significant for water utilities in planning and reviewing freshwater resources and adapting to the variability of climatic factors.

The association of epicardial adipose tissue volume and density with coronary calcium in HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients

Summary: This study compared the association of cardiovascular disease (CVD) with epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) in HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients. The results showed that, after adjustment, EAT volume was significantly associated with coronary calcification in the HIV-positive group, but not in the HIV-negative group, suggesting differences in the mechanistic drivers of atherosclerosis between these two groups.

Intracranial Granular Cell Tumours in Three Dogs: Atypical Magnetic Resonance Imaging Features and Immunohistochemical Study

Summary: This case series reports three dogs with neurological signs diagnosed with intracranial granular cell tumors through histopathological and histochemical studies. The tumors showed hypointense lesions on T2-weighted magnetic resonance images, and their cellular origin was determined to be non-Schwann cell. This study highlights the importance of considering granular cell tumors as a differential diagnosis for hypointense brain lesions on T2-weighted magnetic resonance images.

Metastatic Multifocal Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumour in the Cervicothoracic Spinal Cord of a Dog Initially Mimicking Meningomyelitis

Summary: This case report describes the clinical presentation and atypical MRI findings of a nine-year-old cross-breed dog with histologically confirmed multiple MPNSTs. The dog initially presented with ambulatory tetraparesis and was diagnosed with MUO based on MRI findings and CSF analysis. The dog responded well to treatment but deteriorated after seven months, with a follow-up MRI revealing new lesions affecting different spinal nerve roots. Histopathological examination confirmed multiple MPNSTs in the cervicothoracic spinal cord, a rare finding in dogs according to the literature.

How to Open a Black Box Classifier for Tabular Data

A comparison of non-negative matrix underapproximation methods for the decomposition of magnetic resonance spectroscopy data from human brain tumors

This study compared the performance of different variants of unsupervised matrix factorization methods for brain tumor classification using MRS data. The results showed that NMU methods achieved better classification accuracy than C-NMF, making them more suitable for brain tumor classification.

Clinical and imaging features of a feline lumbar myelopathy resembling ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament in humans

Summary: This is a case report of a Russian blue cat with ectopic calcification of soft tissues within the vertebral canal, involving the dorsal longitudinal ligament. The cat exhibited pelvic limb weakness and reluctance to jump and climb stairs. Surgical excision of the lesion resulted in neurological recovery, with no relapses observed during a 2-year follow-up period.
