Summary: Marine recruits training at Parris Island experienced a high rate of SARS-CoV-2 infection, which was twice that seen in the community. The transmission of the virus was mainly due to multiple introductions and spread within companies. Frequent testing and case isolation may help minimize outbreaks.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the changes in immune function during initial military training (IMT) and found that immune function may be suppressed and infection risk heightened during this period. The study observed an increase in lymphocytes and certain T cells, and a decrease in granulocytes, monocytes, and memory T cells. Additionally, improvements in diet quality were associated with CD8+ cell maturation and reduced proinflammatory cytokine responses.

Summary: The Zika outbreak from 2015-2017 serves as a case study to analyze the global health security perspective on abortion. Despite debates at the global level on whether Zika would provoke changes in abortion regulation in Latin America, no meaningful changes occurred. Through multi-method analysis of Brazil, Colombia, and El Salvador, it was found that the dominant epidemiological approach and conservative forces prevented any changes in abortion regulation despite increased public debate.

Summary: This study describes six cases of invasive meningococcal disease caused by penicillin- and ciprofloxacin-resistant Neisseria meningitidis reported in El Salvador between 2017 and 2019. The bacterial isolates were resistant to both penicillin and ciprofloxacin, with genomic analysis revealing specific resistance mechanisms. These findings highlight the emergence of a potential public health threat and the impact on the efficacy of treatment and prophylaxis protocols for invasive meningococcal disease.

Summary: The study investigated acute blood protein levels in military cadets after combative training-associated concussions. Results suggest that blood biomarkers have potential for use as research tools to better understand the pathobiological changes associated with concussion and to assist with injury identification and recovery from combative training-associated concussions among military service academy cadets.

Summary: This study presents a multistage methodology for detecting small amounts of tetrodotoxin in fish and potentially other marine organisms. The methodology was applied to porcupinefish specimens collected in El Salvador. It involved a three-stage approach, including sample screening, high-resolution mass spectrometry analyses, and further analysis using different techniques. This study reports the presence of tetrodotoxin in D. hystrix collected in El Salvador for the first time.

Summary: This paper examines the social and environmental impacts of tourism development on rural coastal communities in El Salvador, highlighting the inequalities and insecurity it creates. It argues that tourism, rather than promoting sustainable development, reinforces motives for migration and unsustainability for poor rural residents. The research calls for more inclusive and just tourism development policies in El Salvador and other Global South destinations.

Summary: The study found high rates of severe traveler's diarrhea cases at both military and non-military sites, with concerning numbers of severe cases leading to hospitalization and decreased performance at non-military sites. There may be a potential selection bias due to mild cases of TD being less likely to be reported to healthcare workers, and future research should examine other variables among pathogens and hosts.

Summary: This report describes an acute Chagas disease outbreak among soldiers in Colombia. Confirmation of Trypanosoma cruzi infection was done through parasitology, serology, and molecular methods. Treatment with benznidazole resulted in favorable outcomes for hospitalized soldiers. Patrol personnel in rural areas of Colombia may face an increased risk for Chagas disease.

Summary: A. baumannii is a significant nosocomial pathogen, especially when resistant to carbapenems. Outbreaks linked to this pathogen are reported globally, especially during times of societal upheaval. This study identified an outbreak of extensively antibiotic-resistant A. baumannii strain in three military treatment facilities.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the chronicity and phasic variability of sleep patterns and restriction in recruits during basic military training (BMT) and subjective sleep quality in young adult recruits prior to entry into BMT. The study found that sleep duration was suboptimal throughout BMT, with many recruits experiencing sleep restriction for consecutive weeks. Certain training phases had a negative impact on sleep quality. Additionally, the sleep patterns of recruits were highly variable before entering BMT.

Summary: Responding to US measles outbreaks in 2017-19, particularly among insular communities, revealed key operational challenges in areas such as response scale, vaccination operations, exclusion policies, community engagement, and countering anti-vaccine efforts. Lessons from this experience highlighted the resource-intensive nature of outbreak responses and the importance of early coordination with community leaders for efficient operations.

Summary: The Matsigenka people who live in remote areas of the Amazon are exposed to high levels of methylmercury, which may lead to a decrease in working memory. The study found a correlation between methylmercury levels and cognitive performance, particularly in tasks that require executive functions. These findings suggest that the Self-Ordered Pointing Task (SOPT) and the Corsi Block Task could be alternative measures to general intelligence tests when studying remote groups with extensive cultural differences.
