Summary: Homotaurine is a potential therapeutic compound for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and has anti-inflammatory properties. This study suggests that supplementation of homotaurine in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) increases the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-10 and IL-33, while decreasing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-18. The elevation of IL-10 and IL-33 is associated with improved episodic memory in treated patients.

Summary: This study evaluated the diagnostic values of matrix metalloprotease-7 (MMP-7), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) in children with biliary atresia (BA). The results showed that these biomarkers have good accuracy in differentiating BA from non-BA and diagnosing cholic stool in infants.

Summary: Neuroblastoma (NB) is a heterogeneous disease with varying characteristics, and genetic variants of cytokines such as IL-6 and IL-8 may influence tumor progression and metastasis. Elevated levels of IL-6 and IL-8 could potentially serve as biomarkers for predicting poor outcomes in NB patients. The study suggests that genetic polymorphisms and serum levels of IL-6 and IL-8 play a significant role in the prognosis of NB patients, particularly in Mexican children.

Summary: The hyperacute serum has shown positive effects in alleviating symptoms of osteoarthritic knees, providing relief in pain and joint stability. Patients with osteoarthritis knees, with or without effusion, showed improved VAS, KOOS, and Lysholm-Tegner scores 6 months after hyperacute serum treatment. Analysis of synovial fluid revealed two main clusters of proteins that reacted together as a group, showing strong and significant correlations with their fluctuation patterns after hyperacute serum treatment.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the changes in IL-8 and MMP-9 levels in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) after regenerative surgery using deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) and collagen membrane (GTR), either independently or with postoperative administration of antibiotics. The study found no significant differences in IL-8 and MMP-9 levels between the groups at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 6 months. The changes in IL-8 were significant in the antibiotic group but not in the non-antibiotic group during the follow-up period. IL-8 and MMP-9 were positively correlated throughout the study.

Summary: Exercise increases the IL-6 level, which stimulates the production of inflammatory cytokine antagonists. This study compared the effects of wheelchair half marathon on the immune system of male athletes with CSCI and SCI, and found that the race increases IL-1ra level, possibly mediated through circulatory neutrophils.

Summary: This study examined the effects of neuroinflammatory cytokines and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on cognitive deficits in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). The results showed that MDD patients treated with SSRIs had lower cognitive performance and higher levels of IL-8 compared to healthy controls. The positive correlation between IL-8 levels and delayed memory and visuospatial/constructional function was only observed in MDD patients with SSRIs.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the diagnostic value of serum levels and mutational status of IL-8, IL-27, and VEGF, as well as the expression levels of hERG in CRC patients. Results showed significant increases in granulocyte percentage and serum concentrations of IL-8 and IL-27, along with mutations in VEGF, IL-27, and IL-8 in CRC patients. Additionally, hERG mRNA expression levels were significantly upregulated in tissue and blood samples of CRC patients.

Summary: This study explores the mechanism by which the serum of ACLF patients affects the therapeutic efficacy of hUC-MSCs. It is found that inflammation-related factors in ACLF serum can reduce the immunomodulatory function of hUC-MSCs through the NF-kappa B signaling pathway, specifically by promoting the expression of IL-8 in hUC-MSCs, thus compromising their therapeutic effect on ALF.

Summary: This study investigated the serum IL-8 levels, depressive symptoms, and their associations in drug-free MDD patients, MDD patients with SSRIs, and healthy controls. The results showed that serum IL-8 levels were lower in all patients compared to healthy controls, and there was no significant difference between patients with SSRIs and healthy controls. Additionally, serum IL-8 levels were negatively correlated with depressive symptoms.

Summary: Chronic viral hepatitis, caused by Hepatitis B Virus, Hepatitis C Virus, and Hepatitis D Virus, is a significant global health issue. Different viruses require different treatment approaches. Long-term suppressive therapy has had a dramatic impact on chronic hepatitis B, but complete clearance of the virus remains difficult. The unique virology of Hepatitis D Virus makes its treatment challenging, but combination therapy with specific antivirals shows promise. The introduction of Direct Acting Antiviral Agents has revolutionized the treatment of chronic hepatitis C, achieving high cure rates.

Summary: This study investigates the factors influencing the intracellular concentration of GS-331007, a metabolite of Sofosbuvir, in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). It finds that the intracellular concentration is associated with the plasma concentration of GS-331007 and the concentrations of daclatasvir at certain time points during therapy. Treatment with ledipasvir and baseline albumin and glomerular filtration rate are significant predictors of intracellular exposure.

Summary: This retrospective study evaluated the improvements in liver synthesis and portal hypertension in cirrhotic patients cured of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection following antiviral treatment. The results showed that a significant proportion of patients displayed improved liver function and reduced liver stiffness after successful viral eradication. The study highlights the importance of antiviral treatment in improving the condition of cirrhotic patients, and the value of simple clinical tools and liver stiffness measurement in assessing treatment efficacy.

Summary: This study aimed to identify potential factors associated with an increased risk of surgical recurrence in patients with Crohn's disease (CD) who underwent ileocolic resection. A retrospective observational study was conducted, and the results showed that age, smoking, sex, presence of granulomas at local lymph nodes, and treatment with systemic corticosteroids were significantly associated with the risk of surgical recurrence. These findings support the need for personalized follow-up taking into account different clinical, surgical, and histologic features.

Summary: The expression of extracellular Nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (eNAMPT) and extracellular nicotinic acid phosphoribosyltransferase (eNAPRT) varies in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). While eNAMPT is similarly distributed across different fibrosis stages, eNAPRT is increased in patients with advanced fibrosis and is associated with its progression. The combination of eNAPRT with other relevant factors can provide better prediction of disease progression in NAFLD patients.

Summary: The use of tumor biomarkers for the surveillance of patients at risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is common practice in many clinical centers, and a cut-off value of 50 mAU/mL for the biomarker protein induced by vitamin K absence, or antagonist-II, has been found to be appropriate for discriminating between HCC patients and those without tumor. This cut-off value also allows identification of patients without tumor who are at increased risk of developing HCC during follow-up.

Summary: In this cohort study, the fibrosis-4 score (FIB-4) was found to be associated with the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in cirrhotic patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The use of specific cut-offs for FIB-4 allowed for optimal risk stratification of HCC. These findings suggest that FIB-4 could be a useful tool for predicting long-term HCC risk in this population.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a decrease in new diagnoses of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) without a worsening of the cancer stage. In the first two years of the pandemic, the number of new HCC diagnoses significantly diminished. It is expected that patients who have escaped diagnosis may present with a more advanced stage of the disease in the next few years.
