Summary: The aim of this study was to explore the prevalence of sarcopenia and its association with osteoporosis and to determine its impact on survival risk in hemodialysis patients. The study found a significant association between muscle mass and strength with bone density in hemodialysis patients, and those with osteosarcopenia had a higher mortality rate.

Summary: This study compared the risk of mortality between parathyroidectomy (PTx) and cinacalcet treatment in hemodialysis patients. The results showed that PTx resulted in greater reductions in intact PTH, calcium, and phosphorus levels compared with cinacalcet. PTx was associated with a lower risk of mortality, particularly among patients with severe secondary hyperparathyroidism.

Summary: This study found that lower reserved gait capacity (RGC) was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality among patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Patients with higher RGC had a survival advantage even with a slow usual gait speed (UGS).

Summary: Research has shown that the diet of Chinese patients undergoing hemodialysis is strongly influenced by cultural factors. Chinese traditional dietary habits, as well as cultural preferences and taboos, play a significant role in shaping their food choices. Additionally, social culture impacts their eating behaviors and knowledge acquisition. Culturally sensitive interventions are urgently needed to improve diet intake in this population.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the differences in cholesterol synthesis and absorption between hemodialysis patients and healthy controls. Results showed that markers for cholesterol homeostasis were not significantly associated with macrovascular events during a 1-year follow-up, shedding light on potential novel therapeutic targets in managing cholesterol absorption in hemodialysis patients.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between dietary factors and sleep quality among hemodialysis patients. The results showed that more than half of the patients had poor sleep quality, and poor sleepers had significantly increased dietary intake of protein, potassium, and sodium. In addition, there was a lower percentage of energy from carbohydrates and a higher percentage of energy from fats in their diets. Skipping dinner on non-dialysis days and having supper on dialysis days were also associated with poor sleep quality.

Summary: Obesity is generally associated with adverse outcomes and mortality in the general population, but it may provide a survival advantage for hemodialysis patients, known as the obesity paradox. Fat mass serves as a marker of nutrition and survival capacity, with visceral fat being metabolically more active and a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and mortality, while subcutaneous fat may reflect nutritional status and energy storage. The distribution of fat mass, particularly visceral and subcutaneous fat, plays a significant role in influencing outcomes in hemodialysis patients.

Summary: This study compared compliance between pediatric patients with amblyopia undergoing a smartphone virtual reality-based training method (EYEBIT) and those receiving traditional patching method training. The results showed that the use of the EYEBIT method improved compliance in children with amblyopia and was acceptable to parents.

Summary: This paper examines the factors influencing sustainability disclosure quality (SDQ) among plantation companies in Malaysia. The study analyzes data from 44 listed plantation companies on Bursa Malaysia between 2016 and 2018. The findings show that shariah-compliant status, internal mechanisms (board size, women directors, sustainability committees, and business-knowledgeable CEOs), firm characteristics (size, age, leverage, growth, and Big 4 auditors), contribute significantly to SDQ. The study highlights the importance of women directors and sustainability committees in improving SDQ.

Summary: Hemodialysis worsens patients' physical, metabolic, and mental status. Inflammation plays a crucial role in determining the clinical outcomes of hemodialysis patients. Serum levels of cytokines IL-6 and IL-10 are associated with morbidity in hemodialysis, and genetic variability contributes to the severity of clinical outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the proportion and determinants of non-compliance on Rabies post-exposure vaccination (Rabies PEV) among dog bite patients in Perlis, Malaysia. The study found that 19.5% of dog bite patients did not comply with Rabies PEV. Siamese had a higher likelihood of non-compliance, while being bitten during the 3rd, 4th, and 5th years of the outbreak had a lower tendency to non-comply.

Summary: The concentration of water-soluble vitamins is often not measured in hemodialysis patients, leading to undiagnosed deficiencies. This study compared the blood concentration of water-soluble vitamins in hemodialysis patients with healthy subjects and assessed the impact of diabetes mellitus on these vitamins. The study found significantly lower levels of vitamin B-1, B-6, and B-12 in the hemodialysis group.

Summary: This study investigates the association between muscle cross-sectional area and proton-density fat-fraction in patients with sarcopenia undergoing hemodialysis. The findings show a high prevalence of sarcopenia and myosteatosis in patients receiving hemodialysis. The results suggest that muscle quality and sarcopenia have significant clinical implications for patients undergoing hemodialysis.
