Background: Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a newly identified human parvovirus. HBoV is associated with upper and lower respiratory tract infections and gastroenteritis in children. Little is known about the seroepidemiology of HBoV in populations in the Caribbean. Methods: In a cross-sectional study conducted at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica, 287 blood samples were collected from pediatric patients and tested for the presence of HBoV-specific antibody using a virus-like-particle based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: HBoV-specific antibodies were found to be present in 220/287 (76.7%) of samples collected from the pediatric population. Seroprevalence of HBoV was highest in those >= 2 years old. The seroepidemiological profile suggests that most children are exposed to HBoV during the first two years of life in Jamaica. Conclusion: HBoV infection is common in children in Jamaica. HBoV seroprevalence rates in the Caribbean are similar to those previously reported in other areas of the world.

Dengue, chikungunya and zika arbovirus infections in Caribbean children

Celia D. C. Christie, Aileen M. Lue, Roxanne H. Melbourne-Chambers

Summary: This review discusses the impact of dengue, chikungunya, and zika on children in the Caribbean. Dengue is becoming more severe in the region and has increased morbidity and mortality in children. Chikungunya had an explosive epidemic in the Caribbean, with children under 5 years old being the most affected. Zika has a seroprevalence of 15% in pregnancy and causes various complications in children.

The Moderating Effect of Age on Patient-Reported Benefits From Operative Management of Intra-Articular Distal Radius Fractures: A Meta-Regression Analysis

Joshua W. Hustedt, Nicholas Chartrand, Dallin Merrell, Rachel Reichenbach, Eric Pinkston, Chad Stecher

Summary: Age has a moderating effect on the effectiveness of surgical treatment for intra-articular distal radius fractures in older adults. The older the age, the lower the effectiveness of surgical treatment. Patients aged <70 years may experience clinically meaningful improvement from surgery. Patients aged 70-80 years may still benefit from surgery but with decreasing effectiveness. Patients aged >80 years are unlikely to experience clinically significant improvement from surgical treatment.

Summary: To determine the extent of exposure to Zika virus (ZIKV) and chikungunya virus (CHIKV) in Jamaica, serum samples from 584 pregnant women were collected during 2017-2019. The results showed that 15.6% had antibodies against ZIKV and 83.6% against CHIKV. These findings suggest a potential recirculation of ZIKV in the near future, but not CHIKV.
