Objective: Chronic low-grade inflammation and adipokines dysregulation are linked to mechanisms underscoring the pathogenesis of obesity-related metabolic disorders. Little is known about roles of these cytokines on the association between snoring and metabolic syndrome (MetS). We aimed to investigate whether a cluster of cytokines are related to snoring frequency and its association with MetS in apparently healthy Chinese. Methods: Current analyses used a population-based sample including 1059 Shanghai residents aged 35-54 years. Self-reported snoring frequency was classified as never, occasionally and regularly. Fasting plasma glucose, lipid profile, insulin, C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, interleukin-18, lipopolysaccharide binding protein, high-molecular-weight adiponectin and leptin were measured. MetS was defined by the updated National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria for Asian-Americans. Results: Overweight/obese subjects had significantly higher prevalence of regular snorers than their normal-weight counterparts (34.8% vs. 11.5%, P< 0.001). Regular snoring was associated with unfavorable profile of inflammatory markers and adipokines. However, those associations were abolished after adjustment for body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference. The MetS risk (multivariate-adjusted odds ratio 5.41, 95% confidence interval 3.72-7.88) was substantially higher in regular snorers compared with non-snorers. Controlling for BMI remarkably attenuated the association (2.03, 1.26-3.26), while adjusting for inflammatory markers and adipokines showed little effects. Conclusion: Frequent snoring was associated with an elevated MetS risk independent of lifestyle factors, adiposity, inflammatory markers and adipokines in apparently healthy Chinese. Whether snoring pattern is an economic and noinvasive indicator for screening high-risk persons needs to be addressed prospectively.

Summary: Children are at high risk for COVID-19 and require vaccination. This study evaluates the humoral and cellular immune responses of COVID-19 vaccines in vaccinated children to establish a rational immunization strategy. The results show that the second dose of the inactivated COVID-19 vaccine significantly increases antibody titers and strengthens specific T cell responses compared to the first dose. Memory T cells specific to SARS-CoV-2 are also generated after the first vaccination. These findings provide scientific evidence for the vaccination strategy against COVID-19 in children.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the associations of overall lifestyle behaviors with risks of microvascular complications among patients with type 2 diabetes and explore the potential mediation effects of metabolic biomarkers. The study found that adherence to healthy lifestyle behaviors was associated with a significantly lower risk of microvascular complications, and these associations were mediated, in part, through improving metabolic biomarkers.

Association between Prepregnancy Weight Change and Risk of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in Chinese Pregnant Women

Summary: This study investigated the association between weight change from age 18 to pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) among Chinese pregnant women. The results showed that weight change was linearly associated with a higher risk of GDM, and excessive weight gain increased the risk even more. Maintaining weight stability, especially preventing excessive weight gain from early adulthood to pregnancy, could be a potential strategy to reduce GDM risk.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations of liver enzymes and hepatic steatosis index (HSI) in early pregnancy with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk, as well as the potential mediation effects of lipid metabolites. The results showed that elevated liver enzymes and HSI in early pregnancy, even within a normal range, were associated with higher risks of GDM among Chinese pregnant women, and this association was largely mediated by altered lipid metabolism.

Differences in HDL-related mortality risk between individuals with and without hypertension: a prospective cohort study in UK Biobank

Jun-Xiang Chen, Rui Li, Tingting Geng, Yuexuan Wang, Qi Lu, Zhou-Zheng Tu, Yue Li, Yun-Fei Liao, Kun Yang, Li-Rong Zhou, Wen-Wei Tong, Yan-Feng Zhou, Gang Liu, An Pan

Summary: This study found that there is a U-shaped association between high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels and mortality risk in individuals with hypertension, while individuals without hypertension show an L-shaped association. Compared to individuals with normal HDL-C levels (50-70 mg/dL), individuals with hypertension and very high HDL-C levels (>90 mg/dL) have a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality. Additionally, larger size of HDL particles (HDL-P) is positively associated with mortality risk, whereas smaller size of HDL-P is inversely associated with mortality risk in individuals with hypertension.

Rui Li, Jun-Xiang Chen, Qi Lu, Ting-Ting Geng, Peng-Fei Xia, Yi Wang, Liang-Kai Chen, Zhi-Lei Shan, An Pan, Gang Liu

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the associations between lipoprotein subclasses categorized by particle sizes and the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The findings showed that the associations between lipoprotein particles, particularly high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles, and all-cause and CVD mortality varied significantly by particle sizes among patients with type 2 diabetes, highlighting the importance of particle size as a lipoprotein metric in mortality risk discrimination.

Adherence to a Planetary Health Diet, Environmental Impacts, and Mortality in Chinese Adults

Yi-Xiang Ye, Ting-Ting Geng, Yan-Feng Zhou, Pan He, Ji-Juan Zhang, Gang Liu, Walter Willett, An Pan, Woon-Puay Koh

Summary: This study investigated the association between a planetary health diet (PHD) score and environmental impacts and mortality outcomes in a Chinese cohort living in Singapore. The results showed that higher PHD scores were associated with lower greenhouse gas emissions and higher total water footprint and land use. In terms of mortality outcomes, higher adherence to PHD was linked to reduced risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease mortality, cancer mortality, and respiratory disease mortality.
