Summary: This study aims to report the dynamics of CMV markers in NPI women. The results show that available diagnostic tools are unreliable for detecting active infection in over half of confirmed CMV NPI pregnant women. Therefore, universal neonatal screening for CMV is necessary.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence rate for cytomegalovirus (CMV) in pregnant women and the rate of CMV serological testing utilised during pregnancy in a rural region in Germany. The study found that out of 19,511 pregnant women, only 3,800 underwent CMV serological testing, with 2,081 of them testing negative and a seroconversion rate of 0.37-1.42%.

Summary: This study found that serum CMV PCR is reliable in diagnosing recent primary infection (PI) when only IgM is detected. The method has a high sensitivity and is valuable for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the characteristics of acute Epstein-Barr virus (aEBV) infection in children, identify risk factors for hospitalisation, and examine the differences according to cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgM detection (EBV-CMV co-detection). The study found that younger children with aEBV infection had different symptoms and higher rates of EBV-CMV co-detection compared to other age groups, and were more likely to be hospitalised.

Summary: The study retrospectively analyzed a cohort of patients who underwent HSCT and found that CMV clinically significant infection (CS-CMVi) occurred in 48% of prophylactically treated patients, but it did not impact relapse incidence or overall survival. Additionally, the use of CMV-IG alone as prophylactic therapy did not effectively prevent CMV reactivation.

Summary: Even though primary infections are more frequent and cause more severe congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) manifestations compared to non-primary infections, the latter still play a significant role in the overall burden of congenital CMV. Detecting CMV DNA in pregnant women with high IgG avidity index may help diagnose non-primary CMV infections.

Summary: A vaccine to prevent congenital cytomegalovirus infection is a public health priority. A mathematical model suggests that a vaccine given to young children may significantly reduce CMV transmission to pregnant women and the prevalence of cCMV.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study aimed to investigate the birth and neurodevelopmental outcomes of neonates diagnosed with symptomatic and asymptomatic cCMV. The study found that up to half of the cCMV neonates were at risk of developing developmental delay.

Summary: The importance of immunity to the homologous PC encoded by guinea pig cytomegalovirus (GPCMV) in preventing congenital CMV was determined by generating PC-intact and PC-deficient live-attenuated vaccines. These vaccines were compared for immunogenicity and efficacy against vertical transmission in a vertical transmission model, showing promising results in reducing vertical transmission.

Summary: Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) exploits host mitochondrial function to promote viral replication, and current antivirals against HCMV target viral factors. However, these antivirals have limitations such as toxicity and viral resistance. Targeting host mitochondrial function can minimize viral resistance and play a key role in HCMV replication. This review discusses how HCMV alters mitochondrial function and explores potential pharmacological targets for novel antiviral development.

Summary: hCMV is a common cause of congenital infection, leading to potential permanent impairment and severe disease in immunocompromised individuals. Research on hCMV vaccines is ongoing, but challenges in development include the virus's ability to evade immune response and identifying target populations for vaccination.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamics of Torque Teno virus (TTV) DNA load in hematological patients treated with ibrutinib or ruxolitinib, and its predictive value for the occurrence of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNAemia and CMV-specific T-cell responses. The results showed that TTV DNA load was inversely correlated with absolute lymphocyte count, but it could not predict the occurrence of CMV DNAemia or the level of CMV-specific T-cell reconstitution. Despite the small sample size, further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of pre-transplant CMV-specific cell-mediated immunity (CMV-CMI) in the occurrence of post-transplant CMV infection. The results showed that patients with positive pre-transplant CMV-CMI had a lower proportion of post-transplant CMV infection and shorter treatment duration, indicating that pre-transplant CMV-CMI may play a protective role and can serve as an adjunct for pre-transplant risk stratification.

Summary: Recent studies have identified a link between cytomegalovirus (CMV) seropositivity and the severity and progression of asthma, cystic fibrosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study aimed to investigate the relation between CMV serology and lung function in the general adult population. The results showed that high CMV seropositivity in young to mid-adult life may increase the risk of COPD through an accelerated decline of lung function.
