Can probiotic gargles reduce post-tonsillectomy morbidity in adult patients? A pilot, triple-blind, randomised, controlled trial and feasibility study

M. Nasserallah, N. M. de Silva, V Tobin, W. M. Rozen, D. J. Hunter-Smith

Summary: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of probiotic gargles with placebo gargles in reducing post-tonsillectomy morbidity in adults. The study found that the probiotic group had less pain at rest on day 2, but used more oxycodone (5 mg) tablets compared with the placebo group. There were no statistically significant differences in the frequency of adverse effects between the two groups. This trial was feasible.

Quantification and Effectiveness of Vascularized Neck Lymph Node Transfer for Lymphedema: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Ishith Seth, Gabriella Bulloch, Damien Gibson, Nimish Seth, David J. Hunter-Smith, Warren M. Rozen

Summary: This study quantifies the number of vascularized neck lymph nodes (VLNs) and summarizes the safety and efficacy of neck VLNT for the treatment of lymphedema. The results show that neck VLNT has a rich resource of lymph nodes, low risk of complications, and significant reduction in lymphedema symptoms, leading to improved quality of life for patients.

Encountering Peritoneo-Cutaneous Perforators in Microsurgical DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction

Duncan Loi, Justin L. Easton, Warren M. Rozen

Summary: Computed tomography angiography (CTA) is used to assess the vascular anatomy of the deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap for autologous breast reconstruction. It has been observed that there are variations in the vascular anatomy among patients, including the presence of anomalous peritoneo-cutaneous perforators. The routine use of preoperative CTA enables the safe identification of these significant peritoneo-cutaneous perforators.

Evaluating Chatbot Efficacy for Answering Frequently Asked Questions in Plastic Surgery: A ChatGPT Case Study Focused on Breast Augmentation

Ishith Seth, Aram Cox, Yi Xie, Gabriella Bulloch, David J. Hunter-Smith, Warren M. Rozen, Richard J. Ross

Summary: This study investigated whether ChatGPT-4 could provide safe and up-to-date medical information about breast augmentation that is comparable to other patient information sources. The results showed that ChatGPT-4 provided well-structured, grammatically accurate, and comprehensive responses but had limitations in providing personalized advice and sometimes generated inappropriate or outdated references. Therefore, there is a need for further improvement in using AI-driven chatbots for patient education and support systems.

Artificial or Augmented Authorship? A Conversation with a Chatbot on Base of Thumb Arthritis

Ishith Seth, Peter Sinkjaer Kenney, Gabriella Bulloch, David J. Hunter-Smith, Jorn Bo Thomsen, Warren M. Rozen

Summary: ChatGPT is an open AI chat box that has the potential to revolutionize academia and enhance research writing. This study evaluated ChatGPT's contributions to an article on base of thumb arthritis, finding that while the information provided was accurate, it lacked depth and analytical ability. Furthermore, ChatGPT failed to provide relevant references, highlighting the need for caution when using it as an AI generator for medical publishing.

The effect of chemotherapy on the complication rates of breast reconstruction: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Ishith Seth, Gabriella Bulloch, Matthew Jennings, Nimish Seth, Dylan Gracias, David J. Hunter-Smith, Warren M. Rozen

Summary: This meta-analysis investigates the impact of chemotherapy on complication rates in breast reconstruction surgery (BRS). The results show that there is no significant association between chemotherapy and the overall complication rate. However, the rate of wound dehiscence is slightly higher in the neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NST) group compared to the BRS only group, while the rate of infection is lower in the NST group.

Thermal Challenges in Dynamic Infrared Thermography Used for Perforator Mapping

Olivia M. Lin, David J. Hunter-Smith, Warren M. Rozen

Summary: The aim of this study was to explore the different approaches to thermal challenges, both cold and warm, used in dynamic infrared thermography for reconstructive surgery, and investigate whether it affects the success of preoperative perforator mapping. The results showed that cold challenges were overall superior to no challenge and warm challenges. However, this conclusion is limited by the small participant size, the possibility of detection bias, and poor methodology detailing. Larger scale studies and the use of standardized equipment are needed to further investigate and compare different approaches.
