Summary: The study aimed to determine the prevalence of psychiatric diagnoses among breast reconstruction patients and measure their association with patient-reported outcomes. It found that psychiatric disorders had a significant impact on patient well-being, highlighting the need for further research and interventions for breast cancer patients undergoing reconstruction.

Summary: The study found that patients had relatively low levels of decision regret and relatively high levels of satisfaction with breasts, regardless of whether they had implant-based or autologous breast reconstruction. The occurrence of postoperative complications significantly increased levels of decision regret but did not impact satisfaction with breasts. Patients may benefit from more preoperative education on possible complications to reduce decision regret.

Summary: Approximately 14% of women undergoing breast-conserving surgery require re-excision to achieve negative margins, which may affect patient-reported outcomes. Women who required re-excision had lower breast satisfaction and sexual well-being 2 years postoperatively, but this difference did not persist long term.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, immediate alloplastic breast reconstruction shifted towards outpatient procedures with noninferior complication rates. This suggests that a paradigm shift towards outpatient reconstruction may be safe for certain patients, although the lower reoperation rates in outpatients may require further investigation.

Summary: Although advanced age is considered a relative contraindication to breast reconstruction, this study found that older women above 70 years old can undergo implant-based breast reconstruction safely with similar high satisfaction rates as their younger counterparts. Age alone should not be a reason to exclude women from these life-changing operations.

Summary: This study investigated the perception and misconceptions of members of the Japanese Breast Cancer Society regarding the impact of breast reconstruction on breast cancer patient prognosis. The results showed that a quarter of the respondents believed that breast reconstruction affects patient prognosis and underestimated the 5-year overall survival rates of patients who received breast reconstruction and subsequently experienced local or regional recurrence. Due to the lack of evidence on the impact of breast reconstruction on patient prognosis, it is highly recommended to educate physicians with accurate knowledge on breast reconstruction and patient prognosis.

Summary: The study compared the effects of radiation on implant-based breast reconstruction using prepectoral versus submuscular approach. It showed that prepectoral tissue expander placement has fewer complications in nonradiated patients compared to radiated patients, although statistical significance was not identified. Prepectoral placement also had a significantly lower incidence of reconstructive failure than submuscular placement regardless of XRT status, indicating the need for larger-scale studies to determine significant differences in surgical approach.

Summary: Patients who experienced postoperative complications and pain were less likely to be highly satisfied or have no regret. Notably, postoperative pain had a more significant effect on satisfaction and regret after surgery, suggesting focused postsurgical pain management is an opportunity to substantially improve patient experiences. More research and patient education are needed for managing expectations of postoperative pain, and use of adjuncts and regional anesthesia.

Summary: This study aims to identify the most important factors for women considering breast reconstruction and how these factors differ between those who prefer flap reconstruction and those who prefer implant reconstruction. The results show that the risk to abdominal morbidity is the most important attribute, followed by the chance of major complications, number of additional operations, appearance of the breasts, and recovery time.

Summary: The study aimed to determine complications, incidence, and predictors of implant-based reconstruction failure (RF) among mastectomy patients. Infections, delayed wound healing, and receipt of radiation therapy were significant predictors of RF. The newly developed classification tree accurately predicted RF events and non-RF events with over 70% accuracy.

Summary: Applicants for microsurgery fellowships rely on information obtained from colleagues, mentors, and program websites, but the accessibility and quality of available information from microsurgery programs are limited. Most program websites provide basic information such as program descriptions, faculty listings, and operative volumes, but lack details on conference schedules, fellow listings, and selection processes. Furthermore, while affiliated hospitals have a strong social media presence, microsurgery fellowship programs themselves have limited social media accounts.

Most injuries require surgical intervention, but only a small percentage of patients follow up for further care. Summary: The field of vascularized composite allografts (VCAs) has made significant advancements, but the main obstacle remains to be the side effects associated with immunosuppression. Seeking tolerance protocol appears to be the key to widespread application. However, VCAs present additional challenges compared to kidney allografts, including donor types and HLA mismatch issues.

The study found that surgical management led to significant improvement in diplopia in patients with globe malposition and restrictive strabismus. High resolution computer tomography and Lancaster red-green testing were effective in distinguishing these conditions from other causes that would not benefit from orbital surgery.
