A full control of the interaction between confined plasmons and point sources of radiation is a central issue in molecular plasmonics. In this paper, a theoretical contribution towards a physical understanding on the localized surface plasmons excited into metallic nanocones by a point dipole is given. A numerical approach based on the discrete dipole approximation is applied to determine the modifications of the dipole decay rates for varying geometrical parameters of the dipole-metal nanoparticle system. Results declare the centrality of the cone aperture to control the plasmon resonances and to handle the effects it induces on the lifetime of a point emitter. A full spectral tuning of the resonances in the decay rates can be achieved by operating on a unique spatial degree of freedom: by tailoring the aperture alone, total decay rates 10(5) times higher than the free-space value can be obtained at short distances from the metal in a large region of the spectral range. Quite unexpectedly, size dependence of the antenna is found to have a marginal role if only a lifetime manipulation is desired. It becomes, instead, a crucial aspect of the problem when large quantum yields are required. Results presented in this work shed light on spontaneous emission modification due to interaction with plasmonic nanocones of different shapes and are relevant for a number of applications in the fields of nanoplasmonics and fluorescence microscopy.

Noncovalent Interactions from Models for the Moller-Plesset Adiabatic Connection

Timothy J. Daas, Eduardo Fabiano, Fabio Della Sala, Paola Gori-Giorgi, Stefan Vuckovic

Summary: The paper presents accurate models for the description of noncovalent interactions by interpolation along the Moller-Plesset adiabatic connection, which are size consistent for fragments with nondegenerate ground states, have the same cost as double hybrids, and do not require dispersion corrections. These interpolations greatly reduce the large MP2 errors for typical p-stacking complexes and outperform state-of-the-art dispersion enhanced functionals for a variety of data sets.

Plasmon Couplings from Subsystem Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

Giulia Giannone, Szymon Smiga, Stefania D'Agostino, Eduardo Fabiano, Fabio Della Sala

Summary: In plasmonics, theoretical analysis of the coupling between metallic nanoparticles or between an emitter and metallic nanoparticles is crucial for designing new systems. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) considers quantum and spill-out effects, but the subsystem formulation of TD-DFT allows for direct computation of plasmon couplings and analysis of charge-transfer effects. This approach can reproduce reference calculations and is useful for both gap distances greater than 6 angstrom and hybrid plasmonic systems.

Orbital-free methods for plasmonics: Linear response

Fabio Della Sala

Summary: Plasmonic systems, such as metal nanoparticles, have wide applications but classical electrodynamics models are not suitable when characteristic sizes are small. Methods based on the Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) are used to describe quantum effects, but they are computationally prohibitive for large plasmonic systems. Orbital-free (OF) methods can scale linearly with system size and accurately describe collective excitations in plasmonic systems without system-tuned parameters.

Self-Consistent Implementation of Kohn-Sham Adiabatic Connection Models with Improved Treatment of the Strong-Interaction Limit

Szymon Smiga, Fabio Della Sala, Paola Gori-Giorgi, Eduardo Fabiano

Summary: This work fills the gap of self-consistent implementation of Adiabatic Connection Models (ACMs) and introduces new generalized gradient approximations (GGAs) to improve accuracy at strong interactions. The SCF-ACM functionals perform well for molecular systems and strong correlation problems in terms of energy and electronic density.

Gaussian expansion of Yukawa non-local kinetic energy functionals: Application to metal clusters

Fulvio Sarcinella, Szymon Smiga, Fabio Della Sala, Eduardo Fabiano

Summary: The development of kinetic energy functionals is challenging in density functional theory. The Yukawa non-local kinetic energy functionals accurately describe the Lindhard response of the homogeneous electron gas without involving reciprocal space. However, the exponential function used in the Yukawa kernel is not efficiently represented in conventional Gaussian-based quantum chemistry codes. In this study, an expansion of the Yukawa kernel in Gaussian functions is proposed, which is independent of electronic density for the homogeneous electron gas and can be easily tuned for general finite systems. Results for sodium clusters demonstrate that simple Yukawa functionals offer higher accuracy compared to semilocal functionals.

Kinetic Energy Density Functionals Based on a Generalized Screened Coulomb Potential: Linear Response and Future Perspectives

Eduardo Fabiano, Fulvio Sarcinella, Lucian A. Constantin, Fabio Della Sala

Summary: In this study, we investigate the kinetic energy functionals that depend on a generalized Yukawa potential. We show that these functionals can accurately describe the linear response behavior of the homogeneous electron gas, outperforming other semilocal kinetic functionals. Additionally, we analyze a special class of these functionals, the linear yGGA functionals, and propose an extended formula for the kinetic functional. Testing on various model systems allows us to highlight the advantages and limitations of the linear yGGA functionals, providing insights for future development of yGGA kinetic functionals.

Nonlocal kinetic energy functionals in real space using a Yukawa-potential kernel: Properties, linear response, and model functionals

F. Sarcinella, E. Fabiano, L. A. Constantin, F. Della Sala

Summary: This paper introduces a nonlocal ingredient y(alpha) based on the Yukawa potential, which, combined with other semilocal ingredients, provides a more accurate description of the Lindhard function. The derived Yukawa-generalized gradient approximation (yGGA) functionals enable easy computation of total energy and kinetic potential in real space, accurately approximating the Lindhard function for both small and large wave vectors.

Nonlocal exchange and correlation energy functionals using the Yukawa potential as ingredient: Application to the linear response of the uniform electron gas

Lucian A. Constantin, Fulvio Sarcinella, Eduardo Fabiano, Fabio Della Sala

Summary: The reduced, dimensionless Yukawa potential y(alpha) can be used as an important ingredient in building exchange and correlation energy functionals to provide a better description of the exchange and correlation linear response functions. This ingredient is attractive for developing various exchange-correlation functionals, especially in scenarios where semilocal ingredients fail.
