Summary: The study found significant differences in gender distribution, TNM stage, and CYFRA 21-1 levels between patients with thymic carcinoma and thymoma. ROC analysis showed that CYFRA 21-1 had a high accuracy in distinguishing thymic carcinoma from thymoma. Multivariable analysis indicated that CYFRA 21-1 was an independent predictor for thymic carcinoma.

Summary: A sensitive and reliable immunosensor was developed for the detection of CYFRA 21-1, a lung carcinoma biomarker. The immunosensor was made with a carbon black C45/polythiophene polymer-containing amino terminal groups (C45-PTNH2) conductive nanocomposite, providing an excellent electrode surface. The immunosensor exhibited a wide linear range, low limit of detection, and good performance in serum samples.

Summary: This study revealed the overexpression of USP30 in OSCC and demonstrated its role in cell viability and glutamine consumption through deubiquitylation activity. The utilization of USP30 inhibitor MF-094 loaded in nanoparticles effectively inhibited cell viability and glutamine consumption of OSCC, providing a novel strategy for treating OSCC.

Summary: We analyzed the genomic and transcriptomic status of DNA damage response (DDR) genes in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and identified a signature of eight DDR genes that could predict OSCC response to antitumor compounds. Our results also showed correlations between the expression of certain DDR genes and OSCC grading and human papilloma virus infection.

Summary: This study aimed to measure serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in individuals with periodontal health and explore the association between serum CRP levels and chronic periodontitis, and the impact of scaling and root planing (SRP) on serum CRP levels. The study included 100 systemically healthy adults who were divided into two groups: a control group of periodontally healthy subjects and a test group of subjects with chronic periodontitis. The results showed that chronic periodontitis increased blood levels of CRP, which were reduced after periodontal treatment with SRP.

Summary: The study evaluated the role of autophagy in mediating cisplatin resistance in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells. Results demonstrated that cisplatin induces both apoptosis and autophagy in OSCC cells through the ROS/JNK pathway. However, autophagy did not play a significant role in acquired resistance to cisplatin or have a pro-survival effect in the cells. This suggests a complex interplay between apoptosis and autophagy pathways in OSCC.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of drug sensitivity tests for circulating tumor cells (CTCs) isolated from patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The results showed that CTC count increased after chemotherapy but rarely developed drug resistance in patients receiving sorafenib. Therefore, CTC drug sensitivity tests may help predict treatment response for patients with advanced HCC.

Summary: This study analyzed and compared the clinical outcomes of Taiwanese patients with pT4a and pT4b oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) who had undergone surgical treatment. After propensity score matching, no significant differences in outcomes were observed between pT4a and pT4b OCSCC. Positive margins may be the main factor driving the survival difference between T4a and T4b tumors. It is suggested that surgical excision should be considered as initial treatment for T4b OCSCC if feasible.

Summary: This study retrospectively compared the efficacy and safety of lenvatinib and atezolizumab plus bevacizumab as first-line systemic therapy for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. The results showed no significant differences in objective response rate, progression-free survival, and overall survival between the two regimens. Subgroup analysis suggested that lenvatinib was not inferior to atezolizumab plus bevacizumab in terms of progression-free survival in certain patient populations. Both regimens had similar incidence rates of adverse events and impact on liver function.

Summary: In this work, mesoporous calcium-based adsorbents were prepared using an organogel called DMDBS as a soft template, which significantly increased the specific surface area of the adsorbent and enhanced its adsorption capability for fluoride removal. The physical properties and adsorption capacity of the adsorbents could be controlled by adjusting the calcination temperatures and DMDBS loadings. The synthesized mesoporous adsorbent showed promising potential for practical applications in fluoride-contaminated groundwater due to its stable fluoride adsorption capacity over a neutral pH range of 6-8.

Summary: In this retrospective study, the quantification of perineural invasion (PNI) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) was performed using S100 staining. The results showed that a greater amount of PNI identified by S100 staining indicated a poorer time-to-recurrence (TTR), regardless of stage and other prognostic factors. Therefore, quantification of PNI by S100 immunohistochemistry is a potential method for prognosis prediction in OSCC.

Summary: This study explores the role of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and circulating cancer stem-like cells (cCSCs) in predicting the outcomes of patients with metastatic breast cancer after one cycle of chemotherapy. The results show that a decline in CTCs and cCSCs is associated with improved chemotherapy response, longer progression-free survival (PFS), and longer overall survival (OS).
