Background: CYFRA 21-1 (cytokeratin 19 fragment) and C-reactive proteins (CRP) were separately reported to be associated with prognosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The combined roles of CYFRA 21-1 and CRP levels were rarely investigated in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The purpose of the present study was to analyze the relationship between preoperative levels of both CYFRA 21-1 and CRP, with clinicopathological factors and prognosis in OSCC patients. Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 130 OSCC patients between December 2010 and June 2013. Their serum CYFRA 21-1 and CRP levels were measured preoperatively. Results: CYFRA 21-1 level of >= 3.3 ng/mL and CRP level of >= 5.0 mg/L were significantly associated with pathological tumor status (P < 0.001), tumor depth (> 10 vs. <= 10 mm, P = 0.001), bone invasion (P = 0.001), skin invasion (P = 0.006), pathologic nodal metastasis (P = 0.012), and disease-free survival (P = 0.009). Higher CYPFRA 21-1 and CRP levels were also associated with higher risks of distant metastasis (log-rank test, P = 0.013, (HR [95 % CI]) 1.692 [1.097-2.414]). Conclusions: Preoperative CYFRA 21-1 and CRP levels are probable candidates as biomarkers for risk stratification in OSCC.

Circulating Tumor Cells Derived from Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma Rapidly Develop Resistance to Cytotoxic Chemotherapy

Chia-Hsun Hsieh, Chau-Ting Yeh, Ya-Hui Huang, Ming-Wei Lai

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of drug sensitivity tests for circulating tumor cells (CTCs) isolated from patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The results showed that CTC count increased after chemotherapy but rarely developed drug resistance in patients receiving sorafenib. Therefore, CTC drug sensitivity tests may help predict treatment response for patients with advanced HCC.

Summary: This study analyzed and compared the clinical outcomes of Taiwanese patients with pT4a and pT4b oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) who had undergone surgical treatment. After propensity score matching, no significant differences in outcomes were observed between pT4a and pT4b OCSCC. Positive margins may be the main factor driving the survival difference between T4a and T4b tumors. It is suggested that surgical excision should be considered as initial treatment for T4b OCSCC if feasible.

Chen Hsiu Chen, Fur-Hsing Wen, Wen-Chi Chou, Jen-Shi Chen, Wen-Cheng Chang, Chia-Hsun Hsieh, Siew Tzuh Tang

Summary: This study aimed to explore the associations between prognostic awareness transition patterns and end-of-life care in cancer patients. The study found that cancer patients who maintained accurate prognostic awareness or gained accurate prognostic awareness had significantly lower odds of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and higher odds of hospice care in the last month compared to those who maintained inaccurate/unknown prognostic awareness.

Summary: This study assessed the prognostic significance of different nodal parameters in Taiwanese patients with OCSCC and devised an optimized pN classification system. The combination of LNR, number of positive lymph nodes, and ENE provided a better prognostic stratification than the traditional pN classification.

The Utilization of Tunable Transducer Elements Formed by the Manipulation of Magnetic Beads with Different Sizes via Optically Induced Dielectrophoresis (ODEP) for High Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs) and Multiplex Fluorescence-Based Biosensing Applications

Chia-Ming Yang, Jian-Cyun Yu, Po-Yu Chu, Chia-Hsun Hsieh, Min-Hsien Wu

Summary: This study presents a new technique that uses optically induced dielectrodphoresis (ODEP) manipulation and image processing to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of fluorescence for stained magnetic beads. By easily separating biomarkers in clinical samples using different sizes of magnetic beads and corresponding antibodies, this method provides a reliable platform for high-efficiency sensor arrays in clinical applications.

Similar efficacy and safety between lenvatinib versus atezolizumab plus bevacizumab as the first-line treatment for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma

Chung-Wei Su, Wei Teng, Po-Ting Lin, Wen-Juei Jeng, Kuei-An Chen, Yi-Chung Hsieh, Wei-Ting Chen, Ming-Mo Ho, Chia-Hsun Hsieh, Ching-Ting Wang, Pei-Mei Chai, Chen-Chun Lin, Chun-Yen Lin, Shi-Ming Lin

Summary: This study retrospectively compared the efficacy and safety of lenvatinib and atezolizumab plus bevacizumab as first-line systemic therapy for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. The results showed no significant differences in objective response rate, progression-free survival, and overall survival between the two regimens. Subgroup analysis suggested that lenvatinib was not inferior to atezolizumab plus bevacizumab in terms of progression-free survival in certain patient populations. Both regimens had similar incidence rates of adverse events and impact on liver function.

Building high-capacity mesoporous adsorbents for fluoride removal through increased surface oxygen anions using organogel-assisted synthesis

Wei-Fan Kuan, Fang-Yu Chang, Jhih-Jing Chang, Hsuan-Chih Kuo, Chia-Hsun Hsieh, Jenn Fang Su, Ching-Lung Chen

Summary: In this work, mesoporous calcium-based adsorbents were prepared using an organogel called DMDBS as a soft template, which significantly increased the specific surface area of the adsorbent and enhanced its adsorption capability for fluoride removal. The physical properties and adsorption capacity of the adsorbents could be controlled by adjusting the calcination temperatures and DMDBS loadings. The synthesized mesoporous adsorbent showed promising potential for practical applications in fluoride-contaminated groundwater due to its stable fluoride adsorption capacity over a neutral pH range of 6-8.

Quantitative Measurement of Perineural Invasion for Prognosis Analysis of Oral Cavity Cancer Treated by Radical Surgery With or Without Adjuvant Therapy

Kang-Hsing Fan, Chung-Jan Kang, Chien-Yu Lin, Shu-Hang Ng, Hung-Ming Wang, Chia-Hsun Hsieh, Chih-Hua Yeh, Chih-Hung Lin, Chung-Kan Tsao, Shiang-Fu Huang, Ku-Hao Fang, Yu-Chien Wang, Joseph Tong-Chieh Chang, Chun-Ta Liao, Li-Yu Lee

Summary: In this retrospective study, the quantification of perineural invasion (PNI) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) was performed using S100 staining. The results showed that a greater amount of PNI identified by S100 staining indicated a poorer time-to-recurrence (TTR), regardless of stage and other prognostic factors. Therefore, quantification of PNI by S100 immunohistochemistry is a potential method for prognosis prediction in OSCC.
