Summary: Anthocyanins were characterized in red cabbage, sweet potato, and Tradescantia pallida leaves. Various non-, mono-, and diacylated cyanidins were identified in red cabbage. Sweet potato leaves contained mono- and diacylated cyanidin- and peonidin glycosides, while T. pallida leaves mainly contained tetra-acylated anthocyanin tradescantin. The thermal stability of red cabbage and purple sweet potato extracts surpassed that of a commercial food dye, but still fell short compared to the stability of Tradescantia extract.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the phenolic compounds in the edible parts of BRS Carmem grapes harvested at two different stages of maturation. It was found that both mature and immature grapes contained high amounts of flavonols, anthocyanins, hydroxycinnamic acids derivatives, and stilbenes. The concentrations of these compounds were higher in the whole grapes compared to their skins, and higher in the seeds compared to the skins. Despite being immature, BRS Carmem grapes still exhibited a complex phenolic composition.

Summary: Astragalus membranaceus, a traditional Chinese medicine, has medicinal and edible uses in China. It is increasingly used in the prevention of hypertension, cerebral ischemia, and stroke. The important components, formononetin and ononin, may play significant roles in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Metabolic studies were conducted on formononetin and ononin, revealing their metabolic pathways and identified metabolites. The main metabolites of formononetin were hydroxylation, demethylation, and glycosylation, while the main metabolites of ononin were glucuronidation, hydroxylation, demethylation, and sulfonation. These metabolites showed potential cardiovascular activities and strong binding affinities with specific receptors related to CVDs.

Summary: The stalks of broccoli contain a significant amount of bioactive compounds, such as (poly)phenols and glucosinolates, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to develop a new ingredient rich in these bioactive compounds from broccoli stalks and evaluate its bioaccessibility. The findings showed that low-temperature stabilization of the core samples provided the highest content of bioactives, including antioxidant phenolics and sulforaphane. These results suggest the potential for using broccoli stalks as a source of functional ingredients with health benefits.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the purple acai hydroethanolic extract (AHE) possesses antiangiogenic properties, reducing the migration and invasion potential of human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1) and inhibiting the formation of capillary-like structures. Additionally, it enhanced antioxidant defenses by upregulating enzymatic activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase, while decreasing reactive oxygen species production. These findings suggest the potential application of AHE in developing novel therapeutic approaches for angiogenesis-dependent diseases.

Summary: Yihuang decoction (YHD), a famous traditional Chinese medicine formula, has been used for centuries to treat gynecological diseases. This study employed HPLC-Q-TOF-MS to analyze the chemical composition of YHD and identified 90 components, including alkaloids, organic acids, glycosides, flavonoids, and amino acids. Furthermore, HPLC-DAD was used to determine the content of 8 representative compounds in YHD samples, showing good linearity and precision. This study provides comprehensive chemical profiling of YHD and serves as a basis for quality control and understanding its mechanism of action.
