Summary: Salvia corrugata hairy roots were obtained through transformation, serving as a potential source of abietane and abeo-abietane compounds with antibacterial, antitumor, and cytotoxic activities. The study demonstrated the presence of horminone, ferruginol, 7-O-acetylhorminone, and 7-O-methylhorminone in untransformed roots, while agastol and ferruginol were isolated and quantified from the hairy roots, indicating their potential as bioactive compound sources.

Summary: Wulfenioidones A-K (1-11), abietane diterpenoids with highly oxidized 6/6/6 aromatic tricyclic skeleton, were isolated from the whole plant of Orthosiphon wulfenioides. Their planar structures and absolute configurations were determined through spectroscopic data interpretation, electronic circular dichroism calculation, and X-ray crystallography analysis. Bioactivity screening revealed the LDH inhibition effect of compounds 1-4, 6, and 8, with IC50 values ranging from 0.23 to 3.43 μM. Compound 1 selectively inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome and prevented macrophage cell pyroptosis.

Summary: Twenty-four diterpenoids were isolated from the roots of Salvia deserta, with 10 new compounds named salviadesertins A-J. The structures were determined using spectroscopic data interpretation, quantum-chemical calculations, and X-ray crystallography analysis. Cytotoxicity evaluation revealed 6-hydroxysalvinolone (Compound 14) showed potential against multiple cancer cell lines.

Summary: Two previously undescribed ent-abietane diterpenoids, Euphorfinoids M and N, along with seven known analogues, were isolated from the roots of wild Euphorbia fischeriana. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis and comparison with structurally related known analogues. Compound 1 exhibited the highest activity with an IC50 value of 3.62 +/- 0.31 mu M against the proliferative effects of HeLa cell line.

Summary: In this article, the tolerance of Co-catalyzed MHAT-initiated radical bicyclizations towards oxidation at virtually every position in the substrate, oftentimes in unprotected form, is demonstrated. The functional groups in the substrate can also contribute to high levels of stereochemical control in these complexity-generating transformations. Furthermore, the utility of these reactions in the synthesis of three aromatic abietane diterpenoids is documented.

Summary: Plectranthus madagascariensis, a medicinal plant native to South Africa, has shown potential in the treatment of tuberculosis and psoriasis due to its bioactive compounds with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. The phytochemical studies of this plant led to the isolation of five known royleanone abietanes, which showed promising results in inhibiting Mycobacterium tuberculosis and demonstrating comparable toxicity to tamoxifen against HaCaT cells. The plant is considered an important ethnomedicinal plant and a promising source of diterpenoids for potential therapeutic applications.

Summary: In this study, a new ferruginol analogue was found to effectively reduce the virus titer and inhibit cytopathic effect of human coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E) in vitro. In silico analysis was performed to predict the toxicity and estimate the bioavailability of the tested compounds. These findings demonstrate the antimicrobial and specifically antiviral activity of the tested compounds, indicating their potential as new antivirals.

Summary: Nine undescribed abietane diterpenoids (1-9) and eleven known abietane analogs (10-20) were isolated from Callicarpa bodinieri and characterized by various methods. Compounds 3 and 8 exhibited potent anti-inflammatory activities with IC50 values of 36.35 ± 1.12 and 37.21 ± 0.92 μM. The mechanism studies showed that compound 3 inhibited the expression of nitric oxide synthase and p65 involved in the NF-κB pathway.

Summary: Moderate iron supply improves the tolerance of Avicennia marina to cadmium stress by reducing cadmium uptake, enhancing photosynthesis, increasing phenolic and tannin concentrations, and upregulating antioxidant enzyme activity. This could be a potential way to mitigate mangrove degradation caused by cadmium contamination and restore contaminated mangrove ecosystems.

Summary: The record of severe defoliation caused by lepidopteran larvae in mangrove forests has increased in recent decades, causing concern for the already threatened ecosystem. This study used satellite data to assess the extent and health of the mangrove forest in response to severe defoliation caused by caterpillars of the invasive moth Hyblaea puera. The results showed that about 10% of the mangrove area was intensely affected by defoliation, with the A. schaueriana stand being more affected than the A. germinans stand. The health of both stands degraded in October 2020 but showed improvement in biomass production in June 2021. The study highlights the differences in resilience between the two mangrove species.
