Summary: Retinoblastoma (RB) is a rare aggressive intraocular malignancy of childhood that can have severe consequences. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) play important roles in the pathogenesis and development of RB, with different ncRNAs acting as either tumor promoters or suppressors. Understanding the regulatory mechanisms of ncRNAs provides new opportunities for RB therapy.

Summary: Cell senescence plays critical roles in various aspects of organism life, including tissue development, homeostasis, tumor suppression, and aging-related diseases. Oxidative stress, caused by inadequate detoxification of reactive oxygen/nitrogen species, is a major driver of senescence. Non-coding RNAs, such as microRNAs, long non-coding RNAs, and circular RNAs, are important regulators of cellular processes, including oxidative stress responses and senescence.

Summary: Non-coding RNAs, such as microRNAs, circular RNAs, and long non-coding RNAs, play important roles in regulating normal biological processes and may be implicated in the pathogenesis of human diseases like depression. Clinical studies have shown that abnormal expression of ncRNAs in depressed patients compared to healthy individuals, with potential for ncRNAs to serve as biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment. Despite uncertainties regarding their precise roles, ncRNAs demonstrate promising clinical value in the management of depression.

Summary: The formation of circular RNAs (circRNAs) involves a backsplicing reaction facilitated by inverted repeats and RNA-binding proteins, with FUS playing a key role in this process. Research on male mice showed that sperm cells have the ability to circularize mRNAs, with FUS acting as a modulator of backsplicing under CB1 stimulation. A physical interaction between FUS and CNOT6L, as well as cooperation among FUS, RNA Polymerase II, and Quaking, was observed in sperm cells.

Summary: In the tumor microenvironment, cancer cells activate Cancer Associated Fibroblasts (CAFs) to increase their secretion of soluble factors, which contribute to tumor cell proliferation, invasion, and dissemination. STAT3 and IL-6, as key factors, work together to maintain high levels of IL-6 secretion and STAT3 activation. The study demonstrated the essential role of STAT3 in the pro-tumorigenic functions of murine breast cancer CAFs, and identified a STAT3 signature enriched for genes encoding secreted proteins.

Summary: Lanthanide-doped yttrium oxide nanoparticles with selective upconversion properties have significant value in nanomedicine for sensing and diagnostics. Different syntheses of Er:Y2O3 and Nd:Y2O3 nanoparticles were optimized to obtain small particles of regular shape and good crystallinity. The nanoparticles were well dispersed with dimensions of tens of nanometers, and exhibited good emission and upconversion. Pegylation functionalization allowed for biocompatibility, water solubility, and dispersion of the nanoparticles, enabling them to serve as photoactive materials for theragnostics and biosensing.

Summary: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a complex disease characterized by high blood glucose levels. Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is the most common form, affecting middle-aged or elderly individuals and its incidence is increasing among children and adults. This study analyzed the transcriptome of serum samples from T2D patients and identified a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) as a potential diagnostic biomarker. The combination of this lncRNA with clinical parameters showed better diagnostic performance than the glycated haemoglobin test. Using this biomarker in clinical practice would improve the diagnosis and management of T2D patients.
