Summary: This study found that poor glycemic control and high BMI were associated with an increased risk of pyogenic liver abscess. Diabetic patients had a higher incidence of pyogenic liver abscess compared to non-diabetics, and the risk was higher in those with poorly controlled blood glucose levels. Additionally, overweight and obese populations had a higher risk of liver abscess compared to those with normal weight.

Summary: The commonly used method to prevent liver abscess in feedlot cattle is in-feed use of tylosin, but our investigation revealed that Fusobacterium varium, a different species from Fusobacterium necrophorum, is abundant in the ruminal compartment. F. varium, which is an emerging pathogen in humans, showed resistance to commonly fed antibiotics and had genes linked to pathogenicity. This finding suggests that F. varium may play a more significant role in liver abscesses than previously thought and calls for further research and interventions.

Summary: Poor liquefaction of pyogenic liver abscesses is common, making drainage difficult. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the impact of poor liquefaction and subsequent drainage failure on clinical outcomes in patients with liver abscesses.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the mechanisms of Klebsiella pneumoniae-induced pyogenic liver abscess (PLA). Differences were found between K. pneumoniae strains from PLA and non-PLA samples for virulence genes and factors. Hypercapsule production is the cornerstone of hypervirulence, regardless of exopolysaccharides. K. pneumoniae-induced PLA may decrease core inflammatory cytokines rather than increase anti-inflammatory cytokines. Exopolysaccharides could also attenuate the inflammatory response to aid in the immune escape of K. pneumoniae.

Summary: We report a case of invasive liver abscess syndrome (ILAS) caused by Klebsiella oxytoca, in a patient with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus. This case highlights the importance of screening for systemic metastatic infection in patients with pyogenic liver abscess (PLA), especially those with poorly controlled diabetes.

Summary: The incidence of pyogenic liver abscess in Korea has been increasing over the past decade, especially in patients with comorbidities. Diabetes and malignancy are common underlying diseases in PLA patients, and mortality is significantly influenced by age and underlying conditions.

Summary: Liver abscesses (LAs) are common in cattle and can be attributed to diets high in rapidly fermentable starch. The inclusion of antibiotics reduces the occurrence of LAs. Bacteroidetes were found to be the dominant taxa in LA microbial communities, with low proportions of Fusobacteria. Some Bacteroidetes-dominated abscess communities may originate from other parts of the bovine gut.

Summary: Invasive Liver Abscess Syndrome, caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae, is a manifestation of systemic infection. Although common in Southeast Asia, it is uncommon in the United States. This article presents a case of pyogenic liver abscess and associated endogenous endophthalmitis in a patient presenting to the emergency department.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of Enterococcus spp. on pyogenic liver abscesses (PLA) outcome. Enterococci were recovered from 19% of the PLA cases, with Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium being the most frequent species. Enterococcal PLA were more often of biliary origin or post-surgical. The presence of Enterococcus spp. was independently associated with higher mortality and primary treatment failure in PLA cases.

Summary: This case report highlights a rare case of a pyogenic liver abscess complicated by a lung abscess, emphasizing that lack of suspicion for sub-diaphragmatic liver abscess may lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment. Early use of chest and abdominal computed tomography can assist in the early detection of such conditions.

Summary: The article presents a case study of a 71-year-old male patient with spontaneous rupture of pyogenic liver abscess (PLA). The patient was successfully treated with surgery and had good postoperative recovery without any complications during follow-up. The importance of vigilance in diagnosing ruptured PLA is highlighted to prevent misdiagnosis and improve prognosis.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between muscle mass and prognosis in patients with pyogenic liver abscess (PLA). The results showed that muscle mass was independently associated with poor prognosis in PLA, and patients with sarcopenia were more likely to have adverse outcomes.

Summary: This study found a significant risk of pyogenic liver abscess after patients received endoscopic sphincterotomy compared with the other ERCP group, and factors such as aging, male gender, surgery for the hepato-pancreato-biliary system, and hepatobiliary malignancy were significantly associated with PLA.

Summary: This retrospective study analyzed the clinical features and risk factors for pyogenic liver abscesses (PLAs) caused by multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). It found that previous hepatobiliary procedures, preadmission exposure to antibiotics, and elevated alkaline phosphatase levels were independent risk factors for MDRO-induced PLAs. Factors predictive of mortality included admission to the intensive care unit (ICU), inadequate initial antibiotic treatment, and use of inotropic agents. In-hospital mortality was not associated with the presence of MDROs, but close monitoring and appropriate antibiotic therapy are essential for patients with risk factors for mortality.
