Summary: In this study, a novel maize sterility gene DRP1 is identified, which encodes a desiccation-related protein and is required for pollen exine development. The loss of function of DRP1 causes male sterility. Our findings suggest that DRP1 plays an important role in anther dehydration and may be involved in the adaptation of maize to different climatic regions.

Summary: The study showed that the relationship between anther abnormalities and pollen sterility in rice under cold stress at the reproductive stage is not a simple causal one, but rather involves multiple factors. Some cultivars exhibited higher pollen sterility than anther abnormalities at low temperatures, suggesting a complex relationship with potentially different causative pathways.

Summary: The CCR family gene OsCCR18 is essential for maintaining male fertility in rice. The knockout of OsCCR18 leads to abnormal pollen development and the inability to form normal pollen grains. Additionally, several anther development-related genes are significantly downregulated in the osccr18 mutants.

Summary: The Glycoside hydrolase family 9 (GH9) plays a crucial role in cellulose synthesis and hydrolysis in plants. In this study, the researchers investigated the phenotypic characteristics and gene expression of GH9 genes in relation to pollen fertility conversion and anther dehiscence. They identified 74 wheat GH9 genes and classified them into different classes. They found that hormone-responsive elements and light-responsive elements were abundant in these genes, suggesting their involvement in anther development regulation. Based on their findings, they proposed a hypothesis model to explain the regulation pathway of GH9 in fertility conversion and anther dehiscence. This study provides valuable insights into the male sterility mechanism of wheat and offers resources to improve wheat hybrid breeding.

Summary: In this study, overexpression of the A. halleri ZIP6 gene in Arabidopsis resulted in male sterility in flowers, linked to delayed tapetum degradation and endothecium collapse, as well as increased magnesium and potassium accumulation. This phenotype was rescued by co-expression of the zinc efflux transporter AhHMA4, highlighting the importance of fine-tuning zinc homeostasis in reproductive organs. The findings confirm the ability of AhZIP6 to transport zinc in planta and demonstrate the significance of understanding metal hyperaccumulation mechanisms in the metal homeostasis network.

Summary: Rice is a crucial crop for feeding the world's population, and the future demands of population growth and climate change necessitate advancements in rice improvement. Recent developments in rice genomics have shed light on the vital role of the non-coding portion of the genome. Long non-coding RNAs, including linear non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and circular non-coding RNAs (circRNAs), have been shown to play critical roles in various developmental processes related to reproduction and fertility control in rice.

Summary: Different rice cultivars exhibit varying levels of tolerance to heat stress during different reproductive stages, with heat-tolerant varieties demonstrating stable high grain yields and heat-sensitive varieties maintaining stable low grain yields. The development of heat-tolerant varieties should focus on breeding comprehensive tolerance to heat stress across all reproductive stages to address the unpredictable occurrence of future heat events.

Summary: Transcriptomic analyses of developing wheat anthers under heat stress identified key genes involved in hormone biosynthesis, signal transduction, heat shock response, and anther development. Heat stress disrupted pollen development in heat-sensitive wheat cultivars but had no visible effect on heat-tolerant cultivars, leading to reduced grain yield in sensitive cultivars. Genes identified in this study may serve as potential molecular markers for breeding heat-tolerant wheat lines.

Summary: In this study, the gene expression and cytological study of watermelon anther and pollen development were conducted. Differential expression genes (DEGs) related to anther and pollen development were identified, and abnormal development of tapetum cell was found to cause male sterility in watermelon. GO enrichment analysis showed that six GO terms may be related to watermelon male sterility. qRT-PCR analysis validated the accuracy of RNA-Seq results.

Summary: Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is widely used in hybrid seed production. This study investigated the physiological, DNA methylation, and transcriptome differences between a kenaf CMS line and its maintainer line. The results revealed significant differences in hormone levels, photosynthetic products, and ATP contents between the CMS and maintainer lines. The analysis also identified differentially methylated genes and differentially expressed genes that play important roles in carbon metabolism, plant hormone signal transduction, and other pathways. This study provides new insights into the epigenetic mechanism of CMS in kenaf and other crops.
