Diversity of Colletotrichum Species Associated with Olive Anthracnose Worldwide

Juan Moral, Carlos Agusti-Brisach, Maria Carmen Raya, Jose Jurado-Bello, Ana Lopez-Moral, Luis F. Roca, Mayssa Chattaoui, Ali Rhouma, Franco Nigro, Vera Sergeeva, Antonio Trapero

Summary: This study characterized and molecularly identified 185 Colletotrichum isolates causing olive anthracnose worldwide. Twelve different species were identified, with C. godetiae dominant in certain regions. Notably, significant differences in virulence and pathogenicity were observed among the isolates tested on different hosts.

Up-regulation of a stress-responsive endochitinase VvChit-IV in grapevine cell cultures improves in vitro stress tolerance

Anis Ben-Amar, Dorsaf Allel, Ahmed Mliki

Summary: Chitinases are crucial for plant growth regulation, defense mechanism, and stress tolerance. This study reveals that in vitro stress can induce the expression of a specific chitinase, VvChit-IV, in grapevine embryogenic cultures. The up-regulation of VvChit-IV is associated with increased levels of H2O2 and proline, suggesting a potential priming effect for defense response against environmental stress.

A Tunisian wild grape leads to metabolic fingerprints of salt tolerance

Samia Daldoul, Mahmoud Gargouri, Christoph Weinert, Ali Jarrar, Bjoern Egert, Ahmed Mliki, Peter Nick

Summary: This study compared the physiological and metabolic responses of a salt-tolerant accession of Vitis sylvestris, Tebaba, from Tunisia, with the widely used 1103 Paulsen rootstock in the Mediterranean. It was found that Tebaba can cope with salinity through robust redox homeostasis, rechanneling metabolic pathways towards antioxidants and compatible osmolytes, and buffering photosynthesis to avoid cell-wall breakdown. It is suggested that introgression of Tebaba into commercial grapevine varieties is preferred over using Tebaba as a rootstock for improving salt tolerance.

Summary: This study evaluated the growth, yield, and fruit characteristics of 'Mateur' and 'Achouri' pistachio cultivars grafted on P. vera and P. atlantica rootstocks in northeastern Tunisia. Results showed that annual bio-climatic features significantly affected all parameters studied. 'Mateur' cultivar had higher vigor and fruit yield compared to 'Achouri'. Fruit production was higher in P. atlantica rootstock for 'Mateur' but similar in both studied rootstocks for 'Achouri'. The fatty acid profiles of the kernels were not significantly affected by the cultivar, rootstock, or their combination.
