Genetic Diversity of Barley Foliar Fungal Pathogens

Arzu Celik Oguz, Aziz Karakaya

Summary: Barley foliar fungal pathogens such as powdery mildew, net blotch, scald, spot blotch, barley stripe, and leaf rust negatively impact yield and quality. Genetic diversity of the pathogen fungus is influenced by factors such as mutation, population size, gene flow, and resistance mechanisms. Understanding these factors and monitoring pathogen biology can help in developing effective control strategies.

Genetic diversity of Pyrenophora teres in Algeria

Wassila Ahmed Lhadj, Karima Boungab, Fatiha Righi Assia, Arzu Celik Oguz, Aziz Karakaya, Fatih Olmez

Summary: Barley net blotch is a widespread and destructive foliar disease caused by Pyrenophora teres. In Algeria, different cereal-growing areas were studied and 61 P. teres isolates were obtained, with 57.38% identified as Ptm and 42.62% as Ptt. Mating-type assessments revealed that both populations are reproducing sexually, with P. teres f. teres population exclusively reproducing sexually and P. teres f. maculata population mostly reproducing sexually.

Genetic diversity and population structure of apple germplasm from Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey by SSRs

Melike Bakir, Hatice Dumanoglu, Ahmet Aygun, Veli Erdogan, Said Efe Dost, Osman Gulsen, Umit Serdar, Ozgun Kalkisim, Kubilay Bastas

Summary: Turkey has a diverse apple germplasm, with Northeastern Anatolia playing a significant role in the domestication of the Malus genus. Analysis using SSR markers revealed considerable genetic variation among the genotypes and wide range of genetic similarity between them. The SSR data generated will contribute greatly to future germplasm management efforts and comparative studies on genetic relationships among local apples in Northeastern Anatolia.

Evaluation of Dry Bean Cultivars in Turkey for Resistance against Common Bacterial Blight Disease

Tibebu Belete, Kubilay Kurtulus Bastas, Ercan Ceyhan

Summary: This study aimed to assess the resistance reactions of common bean cultivars against Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Xap). The results showed that the cultivars Noyanbey and Ozmen were resistant to CBB and contained SAP6 and BAC6 resistance genes. These cultivars could potentially serve as a source of disease resistance for CBB in breeding programs and sustainable agricultural practices.

Summary: This study describes for the first time the characteristics of Z. tritici isolates in Central Anatolia, Turkey and identifies effective resistance genes for breeding strategies against Septoria Leaf Blotch Disease. The study obtained 60 isolates and identified 28 pathotypes from four provinces.

Increased levels of cell wall degrading enzymes and peptidases are associated with aggressiveness in a virulent isolate of Pyrenophora teres f. maculata

Mahmut Emir, Ahmet Caglar Ozketen, Ayse Andac Ozketen, Arzu Celik Oguz, Mei Huang, Aziz Karakaya, Christof Rampitsch, Aslihan Gunel

Summary: In this study, a comparative analysis of the secretomes of two Ptm isolates, GPS79 and E35, was conducted using a proteomics-based approach. The analysis revealed differentially abundant proteins, with cell-wall degrading enzymes and peptidases being the most enriched in the aggressive isolate. This suggests that the aggressiveness of Ptm is associated with its ability to overcome cell wall barriers and neutralize host defense responses.

Determination of the frequency and virulence of some Botrytis cinerea isolates and a new Botrytis prunorum cryptic species causing grey mould disease on greenhouse tomatoes

Esra Guel, Aziz Karakaya, Ali Erguel

Summary: Tomato is a priority crop for greenhouse cultivation in Turkey and globally. Grey mould disease, caused by Botrytis cinerea, is a significant fungal disease of tomatoes. This study aimed to characterize the population and virulence levels of grey mould pathogens and identify potential hidden Botrytis species on greenhouse tomatoes in Turkey. Botrytis species were identified using genetic sequences. The predominant pathogen was B. cinerea, with no detection of B. cinerea group S or B. pseudocinerea. A novel Botrytis species, B. prunorum, causing disease on tomatoes was reported for the first time. Variations in the virulence levels of B. cinerea isolates were observed, with the B. prunorum isolate showing lower virulence compared to most B. cinerea isolates.

The reaction of CIMMYT durum wheat genotypes to Fusarium pseudograminearum at seedling and adult plant stages

Olgac Dogu Yilmaz, Aziz Karakaya, Gul Erginbas-Orakci, Sinan Aydogan, Karim Ammar, Abdelfattah A. Dababat

Summary: Fusarium pseudograminearum is a common pathogen that causes crown rot in wheat plants, resulting in yield losses. Controlling the disease by identifying resistant durum wheat genotypes is the best approach due to limited control options. In this study, out of 199 genotypes tested, two showed resistance to F. pseudograminearum at both seedling and adult plant stages, indicating promise for breeding programmes.
