Evaluation of Bacillus subtilis PTA-271 and Trichoderma atroviride SC1 to control Botryosphaeria dieback and black-foot pathogens in grapevine propagation material

Catarina Leal, David Gramaje, Florence Fontaine, Nicolas Richet, Patricia Trotel-Aziz, Josep Armengol

Summary: Grapevine trunk diseases (GTDs) cause significant economic losses in wine-producing countries. Researchers conducted nursery experiments using Trichoderma atroviride (Ta) SC1 and Bacillus subtilis (Bs) PTA-271, alone and in combination, to study their biocontrol effect on GTD pathogens. The results showed that these biological treatments reduced the infection rate and fungal isolation of GTD pathogens in grapevine nursery material.

Establishment of a method to collect root exudates from olive plants and its validation by determining the effect of root exudates against Verticillium dahliae

Ana Lopez-Moral, Antonio Rafael Sanchez-Rodriguez, Antonio Trapero, Carlos Agusti-Brisach

Summary: The study aimed to establish a method for collecting root exudates from olive plants and evaluate their effects on the viability of Verticillium dahliae conidia and microsclerotia. The results showed that a 0.01 M CaSO4 solution and a collection period of 4 hours were the optimal combination for root exudate collection. The root exudates from 'Arbequina' and 'Picual' significantly induced the germination of conidia and microsclerotia, and the treatment with Aureobasidium pullulans AP08 enhanced the effectiveness of the root exudates in decreasing conidia and microsclerotia viability.

Biological and Urea Treatments Reduce the Primary Inoculum of Red Leaf Blotch of Almond Caused by Polystigma amygdalinum

Ana Lopez-Moral, Carlos Agusti-Brisach, Maria Dolores Ruiz-Prados, Maria Lovera, Francisca Luque, Octavio Arquero, Antonio Trapero

Summary: Red leaf blotch (RLB), caused by Polystigma amygdalinum, is the most prevalent foliar disease in almond-growing areas in Spain. This study aimed to determine the effect of two microorganisms and urea on RLB inoculum reduction by evaluating different application modes to fallen leaves in field conditions.

Biocontrol of root rot complex disease of Phaseolus vulgaris by Streptomyces sp. strains in the field

Miriam Diaz-Diaz, Alexander Bernal-Cabrera, Antonio Trapero, Alfredo Jimenez Gonzalez, Ricardo Medina-Marrero, Rene Dionsio Cupull-Santana, Edisleidy Aguila-Jimerez, Carlo Augusti-Brisach

Summary: Soil-borne pathogens associated with root rot complex diseases have devastating effects on global common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) yield. In this study, the potential of Streptomyces sp. strains CBQ-EA2 and CBQ-B-8 as biological control agents (BCAs) against root rot complex disease of P. vulgaris was evaluated under natural field conditions in Cuba. Seed treatments with these strains showed significantly higher efficacy in disease reduction than the chemical control and had similar effects as the BCA T. harzianum A-34. The combination of the two Streptomyces strains exhibited the best results in disease reduction and improved germination, yield, and quality of legumes. The findings suggest that microbial consortia should be further researched for the development of biological products for crop protection.

Phytophthora alticola and P. boodjera associated with decline of young Eucalyptus smithii trees in Uruguay

Franco De Benedetti, Victoria Moreira, Pedro Mondino, Sandra Alaniz

Summary: Eucalyptus production in Uruguay has seen significant growth in the last 30 years, particularly for cellulose pulp production. The species Eucalyptus smithii has emerged as a promising choice, but a high percentage of young trees die within the first two summers. This study identified two Phytophthora species, P. alticola and P. boodjera, associated with root and collar rot symptoms in E. smithii. These species significantly reduced the growth of inoculated E. smithii seedlings compared to control plants.

Temperature Effects on the Cryphonectria hypovirus 1 Accumulation and Recovery within Its Fungal Host, the Chestnut Blight Pathogen Cryphonectria parasitica

Pedro Romon-Ochoa, Olivia Smith, Alex Lewis, Quirin Kupper, Wajeeha Shamsi, Daniel Rigling, Ana Perez-Sierra, Lisa Ward

Summary: Biological control of the chestnut blight fungus, Cryphonectria parasitica, using virus infection (hypovirulence) has been successfully implemented in Europe and parts of North America. This study investigated the effects of temperature on Cryphonectria hypovirus 1 (CHV1) within highly infected British isolates. The results showed that the presence of the virus had a negative effect on the growth rate of C. parasitica between 20 and 25°C, with temperature playing a significant role in virus accumulation.

Diversity of Cellulolytic Microorganisms Associated with the Subterranean Termite Reticulitermes grassei

Juan Carbonero-Pacheco, Jose Aguilar, Maria Carmen Raya, Antonio Trapero, Miquel Gaju-Ricart, Carlos Agusti-Brisach

Summary: A total of 23 microorganisms associated with R. grassei were isolated, including fungi, which showed high values of optimum growth temperature. All fungal isolates produced cellulases, and preliminary assays suggest that termites may have a positive influence on fungal dispersion. The study suggests that fungi associated with R. grassei may have potential applications in biotechnological fields.

Fungal Pathogens Associated with Almond Decline Syndrome, an Emerging Disease Complex in Intensive Almond Crops in Southern Spain

Begona I. Anton-Dominguez, Ana Lopez-Moral, Maria Carmen Raya, Maria Lovera, Samara Melgar, Luis F. Roca, Octavio Arquero, Antonio Trapero, Carlos Agusti-Brisach

Summary: This study investigated the almond decline syndrome in the Andalusia region of southern Spain and identified several fungal species associated with the disease. Diplodia corticola and Neofusicoccum parvum were found to be the most aggressive species. Species belonging to Botryosphaeriaceae play a key role in disease development.

Effect of the Nonpathogenic Strain Fusarium oxysporum FO12 on Fe Acquisition in Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Plants

Jorge Nunez-Cano, Francisco J. Romera, Pilar Prieto, Maria J. Garcia, Jesus Sevillano-Cano, Carlos Agusti-Brisach, Rafael Perez-Vicente, Jose Ramos, Carlos Lucena

Summary: Rice is a crucial cereal as it serves as the main food for over half of the global population. Iron deficiency is a significant concern for rice plants in calcareous soils. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the nonpathogenic strain Fusarium oxysporum FO12 on rice plants, specifically its ability to induce iron-deficiency responses, promote growth, and reduce iron chlorosis symptoms.

Colletotrichum infections during flower development and fruit ripening in four olive cultivars

Victoria Moreira, Maria Julia Carbone, Pedro Mondino, Sandra Alaniz

Summary: Olive anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum, is a significant disease in olive-growing regions, with fruit rot and blossom blight being the most destructive symptoms. The susceptibility of olive cultivars to Colletotrichum varies during flower development and fruit maturity. More research is needed to develop management strategies for anthracnose in the most susceptible olive cultivars.
