The successful launch of the Chinese Chang'E-1 satellite created a valuable opportunity for lunar research, and represented China's remarkable leap in deep space exploration. With the observed data acquired by Chang'E-1 satellite, a web platform was developed aims at providing an open research workspace for experts to conduct collaborative scientific research on the Moon. Excepting for supporting 3D visualization, the platform also provides collaborative tools for the basic geospatiai analysis of the Moon, and supports collaborative simulation about the dynamic formation of lunar impact craters caused by the collision of meteors (or small asteroids). Based on this platform, related multidisciplinary experts can contribute their domain knowledge conveniently for collaborative scientific research of the Moon. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Socio-technical scales in socio-environmental modeling: Managing a system-of-systems modeling approach

Takuya Iwanaga, Hsiao-Hsuan Wang, Serena H. Hamilton, Volker Grimm, Tomasz E. Koralewski, Alejandro Salado, Sondoss Elsawah, Saman Razavi, Jing Yang, Pierre Glynn, Jennifer Badham, Alexey Voinov, Min Chen, William E. Grant, Tarla Rai Peterson, Karin Frank, Gary Shenk, C. Michael Barton, Anthony J. Jakeman, John C. Little

Summary: System-of-systems approaches have become popular for integrated assessments, involving the integration of models from various disciplines to inform policy and decision-making processes. However, current modeling paradigms have disciplinary-specific origins, leading to inconsistencies in the conceptualization and integration of socio-environmental systems. A multidisciplinary team of researchers calls for a grand vision for holistic system-of-systems research to address major socio-environmental problems through multi-tiered collaboration.

Ambient population and surveillance cameras: The guardianship role in street robbers' crime location choice

Dongping Long, Lin Liu, Mingen Xu, Jiaxin Feng, Jianguo Chen, Li He

Summary: The study examines how ambient population and surveillance cameras impact street robbers' crime location choice from a guardianship perspective. The findings show that both ambient population and surveillance cameras play a significant role in hindering street robbers' choice of crime location, with ambient population having a greater guardianship effect than surveillance cameras. By including ambient population and surveillance cameras, the model's fitness is improved, highlighting the guardianship role of these factors in street robbers' decision-making process.

A Barotropic Tide Model for Global Ocean Based on Rotated Spherical Longitude-Latitude Grids

Fuqiang Lu, Milan Konecny, Min Chen, Tomas Reznik

Summary: Ocean modeling and simulation play a crucial role in understanding dynamic processes in the geophysical system, with the simulation of tidal dynamics being particularly significant. This paper introduces a new longitude-latitude spherical grid coupled with rotated coordinate mapping to address existing problems in global ocean modeling, demonstrating the model's ability to support tidal dynamics simulation in the global ocean. The proposed model utilizes a finite volume method on staggered C grid for spatial approximation and third-order Adams-Bashforth method for temporal integration, showing promising results for simulating two-dimensional tidal waves in the Arctic Ocean and beyond.

Monitoring Lightning Location Based on Deep Learning Combined with Multisource Spatial Data

Mingyue Lu, Yadong Zhang, Min Chen, Manzhu Yu, Menglong Wang

Summary: Lightning monitoring plays a crucial role in disaster prevention and mitigation. In this study, a Lightning Monitoring Residual Network (LM-ResNet) is proposed, which combines deep learning with weather radar data and land attribute data. The results show that the LM-ResNet model has significant potential in monitoring lightning locations. By converting the lightning monitoring problem into a binary classification problem and using various data, a lightning feature dataset is established. The focal loss function is adopted to handle the imbalance issue of the dataset.

Spatio-temporal heterogeneity in the international trade resilience during COVID-19

Wei Luo, Lingfeng He, Zihui Yang, Shirui Zhang, Yong Wang, Dianbo Liu, Sheng Hu, Li He, Jizhe Xia, Min Chen

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have severely impacted global trade, with different economies experiencing varying degrees of damage and recovery rates. This research evaluates the spatio-temporal vulnerabilities of international trade networks during the current crisis to understand global production resilience and prepare for future crises. Analysis of pre- and post-COVID-19 outbreak trade networks at various scales reveals that countries with effective COVID-19 containment, such as East Asia (particularly Mainland China), and high-income countries with rapid vaccine roll-out (e.g., the U.S.) exhibit greater resilience, while low-income countries (e.g., Africa) show higher vulnerability. The findings emphasize the need for a comprehensive strategy to enhance international trade resilience, including non-pharmaceutical measures, timely vaccine development and distribution, strong governance, robust healthcare systems, and international cooperation.
